Measurement of the Parallax of PSR B0950+08 Using the VLBA
A new technique has been developed to remove the ionosphere's distorting
effects from low frequency VLBI data. By fitting dispersive and non-dispersive
components to the phases of multi-frequency data, the ionosphere can be
effectively removed from the data without the use of {\em a priori} calibration
information. This technique, along with the new gating capability of the VLBA
correlator, was used to perform accurate astrometry on pulsar B0950+08,
resulting in a much improved measurement of this pulsar's proper motion
( mas/yr, mas/yr)
and parallax ( mas). This puts the pulsar at a distance of
parsecs, about twice as far as previous estimates, but in good

The Radio Recovery of SN 1970G: The Continuing Radio Evolution of SN 1970G
Using the Very Large Array, we have detected radio emission from the site of
SN 1970G in the Sc galaxy M101. These observations are 31 years after the
supernova event, making SN 1970G the longest monitored radio supernova. With
flux densities of 0.12 +/- 0.020 mJy at 6 cm and 0.16 +/- 0.015 mJy at 20 cm,
the spectral index of -0.24 +/- 0.20 appears to have flattened somewhat when
compared with the previously reported value of -0.56 +/- 0.11, taken in 1990.
The radio emission at 20 cm has decayed since the 1990 observations with a
power-law index of beta_20cm = -0.28 +/- 0.13. We discuss the radio properties

Neuroendocrine Liver Metastases and Orthotopic Liver Transplantation: The US Experience
Liver transplantation remains a controversial therapy for Neuroendocrine liver metastases (NLM), with coflicting suvival data reported. The aim was to assess the evolution of outcomes for patients transplanted for NLM in the US, both before and after the introduction of the MELD scoring system in 2002. The UNOS/OPTN database was reviewed to identify patients diagnosed with NLM who subsequently underwent a liver transplantation from 1988 to March 2011 (n = 184); Patient survival was determined using Kaplan-Meier methods and log-rank tests, and cox regression analysis was performed, using SPSS 15.0 (SPSS, Inc, Chicago, IL). The overall NLM patient survivals in the pre-MELD era were 79.5%, 61.4%, and 49.2% at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. After the introduction of the MELD score, NET/NLM patients had improved overall patient survivals at 1, 3, and 5 years of 84.7%, 65%, and 57.8%. Patients transplanted after 2002 had an improved survival outcome. Notably, the overall patient survival for NET is not significantly different when compared to the outcomes of patients transplanted for HCC, in the current era. This progress acknowleges the significant improvement in outcomes for NLM patients after liver transplantation and the potential for further gain in the survival of otherwise nonsurgical, terminal patients
Treatment of Liver Metastases in Patients with Neuroendocrine Tumors: A Comprehensive Review
Patients diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET) often are also diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Liver Metastases (NLM) during the course of their disease. NLM can cause significant morbidity and mortality, oftentimes much more than compared to patients with NET. Treatment options have been limited in the past, focusing on surgical resections, for which only a minority of patients are candidates. However, developments of new treatment modalities have progressed rapidly and patients with NLM now have significantly more options, including surgical-directed therapies; liver-directed therapies; and nonsurgical, non-liver-directed therapies. This review provides information about the roles of hepatic resection, orthotopic liver resection, radiofrequency ablation, hepatic artery embolization and hepatic artery chemoembolization, hepatic artery radioembolization and selective internal radiation therapy, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy, systemic chemotherapy, biotherapies including somatostatin analogs and interferon-α, vascular endothelial growth factor and mTOR targets, and microRNA-regulated pathways. Given these new options, the clinician can tailor therapy specific to the patient diagnosed with NLM, thereby giving the patient the best possible chance of prolonged survival
Deriving simple predictions from complex models to support environmental decision-making
Recent decades have seen great advances in ecological modelling and computing power, enabling ecologists to build increasingly detailed models to more accurately represent ecological systems. To better inform environmental decision-making, it is important that the predictions of these models are expressed in simple ways that are straightforward for stakeholders to comprehend and use. One way to achieve this is to predict threshold values for environmental perturbations (e.g. climate change, habitat modification, food loss, sea level rise) associated with negative impacts on individuals, populations, communities or ecosystems. These thresholds can be used by stakeholders to inform management and policy. In this paper we demonstrate how this approach can use individual-based models of birds, their prey and habitats, to provide the evidence-base for coastal bird conservation and shellfishery management. In particular, we show how such models can be used to identify threshold values for perturbations of food abundance that can impact negatively on bird populations. We highlight how environmental thresholds could be used more widely to inform management of species and habitats under environmental change
Optimising in situ gamma measurements to identify the presence of radioactive particles in land areas
High-coverage in situ surveys with gamma detectors are the best means of identifying small hotspots of activity, such as radioactive particles, in land areas. Scanning surveys can produce rapid results, but the probabilities of obtaining false positive or false negative errors are often unknown, and they may not satisfy other criteria such as estimation of mass activity concentrations. An alternative is to use portable gamma-detectors that are set up at a series of locations in a systematic sampling pattern, where any positive measurements are subsequently followed up in order to determine the exact location, extent and nature of the target source. The preliminary survey is typically designed using settings of detector height, measurement spacing and counting time that are based on convenience, rather than using settings that have been calculated to meet requirements. This paper introduces the basis of a repeatable method of setting these parameters at the outset of a survey, for pre-defined probabilities of false positive and false negative errors in locating spatially small radioactive particles in land areas. It is shown that an un-collimated detector is more effective than a collimated detector that might typically be used in the field
The W51 Giant Molecular Cloud
We present 45"-47" angular resolution maps at 50" sampling of the 12CO and
13CO J=1-0 emission toward a 1.39 deg x 1.33 deg region in the W51 HII region
complex. These data permit the spatial and kinematic separation of several
spectral features observed along the line of sight to W51, and establish the
presence of a massive (1.2 x 10^6 Mo), large (83 pc x 114 pc) giant molecular
cloud (GMC), defined as the W51 GMC, centered at (l,b,V) = (49.5 deg, -0.2 deg,
61 km/s). A second massive (1.9 x 10^5 Mo), elongated (136 pc x 22 pc)
molecular cloud is found at velocities of about 68 km/s along the southern edge
of the W51 GMC. Of the five radio continuum sources that classically define the
W51 region, the brightest source at lambda 6cm (G49.5-0.4) is spatially and
kinematically coincident with the W51 GMC and three (G48.9-0.3, G49.1-0.4, and
G49.2-0.4) are associated with the 68 km/s cloud. Published absorption line
spectra indicate that the fifth prominent continuum source (G49.4-0.3) is
located behind the W51 molecular cloud. The W51 GMC is among the upper 1% of
clouds in the Galactic disk by size and the upper 5-10% by mass. While the W51
GMC is larger and more massive than any nearby molecular cloud, the average H2
column density is not unusual given its size and the mean H2 volume density is
comparable to that in nearby clouds. The W51 GMC is also similar to other
clouds in that most of the molecular mass is contained in a diffuse envelope
that is not currently forming massive stars. We speculate that much of the
massive star formation activity in this region has resulted from a collision
between the 68 km/s cloud and the W51 GMC.Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astronomical Journal. 21 pages, plus

The Southern Galactic Plane Survey: The Test Region
The Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) is a project to image the HI line
emission and 1.4 GHz continuum in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way at high
resolution using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes
Radio Telescope. In this paper we describe the survey details and goals,
present lambda 21-cm continuum data, and discuss HI absorption and emission
characteristics of the SGPS Test Region (325.5 deg < l < 333.5 deg; -0.5 deg <
b < +3.5 deg). We explore the effects of massive stars on the interstellar
medium (ISM) through a study of HI shells and the HI environments of HII
regions and supernova remnants. We find an HI shell surrounding the HII region
RCW 94 which indicates that the region is embedded in a molecular cloud. We
give lower limits for the kinematic distances to SNRs G327.4+0.4 and G330.2+1.0
of 4.3 kpc and 4.9 kpc, respectively. We find evidence of interaction with the
surrounding HI for both of these remnants. We also present images of a possible
new SNR G328.6-0.0. Additionally, we have discovered two small HI shells with
