Applying remote sensing and GIS techniques in solving rural county information needs
The project designed was to acquaint county government officials and their clientele with remote sensing and GIS products that contain information about land conditions and land use. Other users determined through the course of this project were federal agencies working at the county level, agricultural businesses and others in need of spatial information. The specific project objectives were: (1) to investigate the feasibility of using remotely sensed data to identify and quantify specific land cover categories and conditions for purposes of tax assessment, cropland area measurements and land use evaluation; (2) to investigate the use of satellite remote sensing data as an aid in assessing soil management practices; and (3) to evaluate the use of remotely sensed data to assess soil resources and conditions which affect productivity
Optimal Tableaux Method for Constructive Satisfiability Testing and Model Synthesis in the Alternating-time Temporal Logic ATL+
We develop a sound, complete and practically implementable tableaux-based
decision method for constructive satisfiability testing and model synthesis in
the fragment ATL+ of the full Alternating time temporal logic ATL*. The method
extends in an essential way a previously developed tableaux-based decision
method for ATL and works in 2EXPTIME, which is the optimal worst case
complexity of the satisfiability problem for ATL+ . We also discuss how
suitable parametrizations and syntactic restrictions on the class of input ATL+
formulae can reduce the complexity of the satisfiability problem.Comment: 45 page
NASA applications project in Miami County, Indiana
The study site selection is intended to serve all of the different research areas within the project, i.e., soil conditions, soil management, etc. There are seven major soil associations or soils formed on similar landscapes in the Miami Co., and over 38 soil series that were mapped. Soil sampling was conducted in some sites because of its variability in soils and cover types, variable topography, and presence of erosion problems. Results from analysis of these soil data is presented
Testing black hole no-hair theorem with OJ287
We examine the ability to test the black hole no-hair theorem at the 10%
level in this decade using the binary black hole in OJ287. In the test we
constrain the value of the dimensionless parameter q that relates the scaled
quadrupole moment and spin of the primary black hole: q2 = -q 2 . At the
present we can say that q = 1 \pm 0.3 (one), in agreement with General
Relativity and the no-hair theorems. We demonstrate that this result can be
improved if more observational data is found in historical plate archives for
the 1959 and 1971 outbursts. We also show that the predicted 2015 and 2019
outbursts will be crucial in improving the accuracy of the test. Space-based
photometry is required in 2019 July due the proximity of OJ287 to the Sun at
the time of the outburst. The best situation would be to carry out the
photometry far from the Earth, from quite a different vantage point, in order
to avoid the influence of the nearby Sun. We have considered in particular the
STEREO space mission which would be ideal if it has a continuation in 2019 or
LORRI on board the New Horizons mission to Pluto.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figure

Dispersion enhancement and damping by buoyancy driven flows in 2D networks of capillaries
The influence of a small relative density difference on the displacement of
two miscible liquids is studied experimentally in transparent 2D networks of
micro channels. Both stable displacements in which the denser fluid enters at
the bottom of the cell and displaces the lighter one and unstable displacements
in which the lighter fluid is injected at the bottom and displaces the denser
one are realized. Except at the lowest mean flow velocity U, the average
of the relative concentration satisfies a convection-dispersion
equation. The dispersion coefficient is studied as function of the relative
magnitude of fluid velocity and of the velocity of buoyancy driven fluid
motion. A model is suggested and its applicability to previous results obtained
in 3D media is discussed
Population Growth and Mortality Sources of the Black Bear Population in Northern Georgia
An understanding of black bear (Ursus americanus) population trends and cause-specific mortality is needed to direct management decisions in northern Georgia given an increasing human population. Therefore, we evaluated black bear population trends and mortality sources across 26 counties and 18 Wildlife Management Areas in northern Georgia from 1979–2014. We collected harvest data from 6,433 individuals during the study period. Using age-at-harvest data, population reconstruction illustrated an increasing trend in the bear population for both males (λ = 1.113) and females (λ = 1.108). Bait station indices reflected a similar increase in the bear population based on increased visitation over time (min: 12.3% visitation in 1983; max: 76.7% visitation in 2009). Bear-vehicle mortalities also increased from 1986–2014 and were greater for males relative to females, especially males ≤2 years old. Bear-vehicle mortalities were greater for males than for females during May–July; however, bear-vehicle mortalities increased for both sexes during August–November. Current population trajectory suggests black bear populations in northern Georgia will continue to increase. If bear population trends continue to increase, we suggest further evaluation of current bear harvest regulations in northern Georgia to reduce potential bear-human conflicts
