    Signatures of a gearwheel quantum spin liquid in a spin-12\frac{1}{2} pyrochlore molybdate Heisenberg antiferromagnet

    We theoretically investigate the low-temperature phase of the recently synthesized Lu2_2Mo2_2O5_5N2_2 material, an extraordinarily rare realization of a S=1/2S=1/2 three-dimensional pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet in which Mo5+^{5+} are the S=1/2S=1/2 magnetic species. Despite a Curie-Weiss temperature (ΘCW\Theta_{\rm CW}) of 121(1)-121(1) K, experiments have found no signature of magnetic ordering oror spin freezing down to T0.5T^*\approx0.5 K. Using density functional theory, we find that the compound is well described by a Heisenberg model with exchange parameters up to third nearest neighbors. The analysis of this model via the pseudofermion functional renormalization group method reveals paramagnetic behavior down to a temperature of at least T=ΘCW/100T=|\Theta_{\rm CW}|/100, in agreement with the experimental findings hinting at a possible three-dimensional quantum spin liquid. The spin susceptibility profile in reciprocal space shows momentum-dependent features forming a "gearwheel" pattern, characterizing what may be viewed as a molten version of a chiral noncoplanar incommensurate spiral order under the action of quantum fluctuations. Our calculated reciprocal space susceptibility maps provide benchmarks for future neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of Lu2_2Mo2_2O5_5N2_2.Comment: Published version.     This paper addresses the problem of state estimation in the case where the prior distribution of the states is not perfectly known but instead is parameterized by some unknown parameter. Thus in order to support the state estimator with prior information on the states and improve the quality of the state estimates, it is necessary to learn this unknown parameter first. Here we assume a parameterized Gaussian Markov random field to model the prior distribution of the states and propose an algorithm that is able to learn its parameters from given observations on these states. The effectiveness of this approach is proven experimentally by simulations

    No effect of dislocation status at arrival in emergency department on outcome of knee joint dislocations

    Purpose Knee dislocation is a rare but severe injury of the lower extremities. The aim of this study was to report on the epidemiology, diagnostics and treatment of such injuries and to identify negative predictors of clinical outcomes. Methods This retrospective analysis included all knee dislocations treated at a Level I Trauma Centre in Germany between 2009 and 2021. Medical records were categorised, collected and analysed in a standardised manner. A follow-up visit 1 year after the injury focused on limitations in knee mobility. Results A total of 120 knee dislocations were included in the study. 29.3% of patients presented to the emergency department with a dislocated joint, and 17.5% (n = 21) had a neurovascular lesion. At follow-up 12 months after the injury, 65.8% of the patients reported limitations in the range of motion, and 11.7% (n = 14) reported severe limitations in daily activities. Site infections due to surgery occurred in 3.3% of patients. Increased body weight (r = 0.294; p < 0.001 and r = 0.259; p = 0.004), an increased body mass index above 25 kg/m2 (body mass index, r = 0.296; p < 0.001 and r = 0.264; p = 0.004) and deficits in peripheral perfusion as well as sensory and motor function (r = 0.231; p = 0.040 and r = −0.192; p = 0.036) were found to be negative predictive factors for clinical outcome. For posttraumatic neurovascular injury, lack of peripheral perfusion, insufficient sensory and motor function (r = −0.683; p < 0.0001), as well as a higher Schenck grade (r = 0.320; p = 0.037), were identified as independent risk factors. The status of dislocation at the site of the accident and on arrival at the emergency department had no impact on the outcome or neurovascular injury. Conclusion Knee dislocation is a rare injury with a high rate of severe complications such as neurovascular lesions. In particular, the initial status of neurovascular structures and injury classification showed a relevant negative correlation with the posttraumatic status of nerves and vessels. In particular, patients with these characteristics need close monitoring to prevent negative long-term consequences

    Holocene bidirectional river system along the Kenya Rift and its influence on East African faunal exchange and diversity gradients

The assembly of this exceptional biodiversity and the drivers behind diversity gradients remain poorly understood, with diversification often studied at local scales and less attention paid to biotic exchange between Afrotropical regions. Here, we reconstruct a river system that existed for several millennia along the now semiarid Kenya Rift Valley during the humid early Holocene and show how this river system influenced postglacial dispersal of fishes and mammals due to its dual role as a dispersal corridor and barrier. Using geomorphological, geochronological, isotopic, and fossil analyses and a synthesis of radiocarbon dates, we find that the overflow of Kenyan rift lakes between 12 and 8 ka before present formed a bidirectional river system consisting of a “Northern River” connected to the Nile Basin and a “Southern River,” a closed basin. The drainage divide between these rivers represented the only viable terrestrial dispersal corridor across the rift. The degree and duration of past hydrological connectivity between adjacent river basins determined spatial diversity gradients for East African fishes. Our reconstruction explains the isolated distribution of Nilotic fish species in modern Kenyan rift lakes, Guineo-Congolian mammal species in forests east of the Kenya Rift, and recent incipient vertebrate speciation and local endemism in this region.     Se Nanopowder Conversion into Lubricious 2D Selenide Layers by Tribochemical Reactions

    : Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) coatings have attracted enormous scientific and industrial interest due to their outstanding tribological behavior. The paradigmatic example is MoS2 , even though selenides and tellurides have demonstrated superior tribological properties. Here, an innovative in operando conversion of Se nanopowders into lubricious 2D selenides, by sprinkling them onto sliding metallic surfaces coated with Mo and W thin films, is described. Advanced material characterization confirms the tribochemical formation of a thin tribofilm containing selenides, reducing the coefficient of friction down to below 0.1 in ambient air, levels typically reached using fully formulated oils. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations under tribological conditions reveal the atomistic mechanisms that result in the shear-induced synthesis of selenide monolayers from nanopowders. The use of Se nanopowder provides thermal stability and prevents outgassing in vacuum environments. Additionally, the high reactivity of the Se nanopowder with the transition metal coating in the conditions prevailing in the contact interface yields highly reproducible results, making it particularly suitable for the replenishment of sliding components with solid lubricants, avoiding the long-lasting problem of TMD-lubricity degradation caused by environmental molecules. The suggested straightforward approach demonstrates an unconventional and smart way to synthesize TMDs in operando and exploit their friction- and wear-reducing impact

    The cost-utility of a return-to-work intervention in comparison to routine care for patients with mental disorders in Germany: Results from the RETURN project

    Abstract Background Only two-thirds of patients admitted to psychiatric wards return to their previous jobs. Return-to-work interventions in Germany are investigated for their effectiveness, but information regarding cost-effectiveness is lacking. This study investigates the cost-utility of a return-to-work intervention for patients with mental disorders compared to treatment as usual (TAU). Methods We used data from a cluster-randomised controlled trial including 166 patients from 28 inpatient psychiatric wards providing data at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Health and social care service use was measured with the Client Sociodemographic and Service Receipt Inventory. Quality of life was measured with the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire. Cost-utility analysis was performed by calculating additional costs per one additional QALY (Quality-Adjusted Life Years) gained by receiving the support of return-to-work experts, in comparison to TAU. Results No significant cost or QALY difference between the intervention and control groups has been detected. The return-to-work intervention cannot be identified as cost-effective in comparison to TAU. Conclusions The employment of return-to-work experts could not reach the threshold of providing good value for money. TAU, therefore, seems to be sufficient support for the target group
