Is there a mass dependence in the spin structure of baryons?

    Get PDF
We analyze the axial-vector form factors of the nucleon-hyperon system in a model with SU(3)flavor_{\text{flavor}} symmetry breaking due to mass dependent quark spin polarizations. This mass dependence is deduced from an analysis of magnetic moment data, and implies that the spin contributions from the quarks to a baryon decrease with the mass of the baryon. When applied to the axial-vector form factors, these mass dependent spin polarizations bring the various sum-rules from the quark model in better agreement with experimental data. As a consequence our analysis leads to a reduced value for the total spin polarization of the proton.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. To be published in Physica Script

Magnetic moments of the 3/2 resonances and their quark spin structure

We discuss magnetic moments of the J=3/2J=3/2 baryons based on an earlier model for the baryon magnetic moments, allowing for flavor symmetry breaking in the quark magnetic moments as well as a general quark spin structure. From our earlier analysis of the nucleon-hyperon magnetic moments and the measured values of the magnetic moments of Δ++\Delta^{++} and Ω−\Omega^{-} we predict the other magnetic moments and deduce the spin structure of the resonance particles. We find from experiment that the total spin polarization of the decuplet baryons, ΔΣ(3/2)\Delta\Sigma(3/2), is considerably smaller than the non-relativistic quark model value of 3, although the data is still not good enough to give a precise determination.Comment: 13 pages, REVTeX, 2 figures, minor clarifying change

Forensic assessment of single stab injuries to the trunk

IntroductionForensic pathologists are frequently confronted with questions about the likelihood that an injury is inflicted by an assault or is self-inflicted. However, little is known of epidemiological variables applicable to differentiate between homicides and suicides in deaths caused by single stab injuries to the trunk. MethodUsing the Swedish forensic autopsy register we identified 94 homicides and 45 suicides between 2010 and 2021 that died following a single stab injury to the trunk. We extracted characteristics from the cases and performed statistical analyses using Mann-Whitney U and Chi-square test.ResultVictims of homicides were younger than suicide victims (median age 33 years vs. 52 years, p < 0.05), and males were in majority in both groups (93% vs. 82%). Some homicidal stab wounds were placed on the posterior (12%) and axillar trunk (11%) unlike the suicidal stabs which were all placed on the anterior trunk. Most stab wounds of all examinations were placed on the left side of the anterior thorax (60%). In suicides, single stab injuries to the heart were more common than in homicides (67% vs. 48%, p < 0.05). Vasculature injuries were more common in homicides (51% vs. 9%, p < 0.05).DiscussionThe epidemiological variables could be used as a tool when assessing the manner of death in single stabs. Further research on variables associated with manner of death are needed and we suggest also including surviving victims in such analyses

Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2011.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. Within the U.S. context this trend is driven by the Baby Boomers, the 80 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964. As more Boomers enter into late adulthood they will require an increased degree of support as age related needs increase. Historically three approaches have been followed in order to address the needs of the aged: aging in place or in-home care, assisted living and nursing homes. Continuing care communities have attempted to provide an integrated model to assist through all the stages of late adulthood. With the exception of in home care, all architectural models for elderly care have been driven by a paradigm of 'aging as disease' which, through isolation and differentiation, sets up homogenous 'enclaves' for the elderly. This has attributed to the stigmatization associated with the aged and architecture for the aged. This thesis attempts to challenge the paradigms informing architecture for the elderly by proposing a diverse, urban, mixed-use residential development supporting the needs of the aged and the aging. Essential to this is a reconsideration of the contemporary nature of late adulthood which requires an emphasis on lifestyle rather than illness and a manifestation of an architecture that is urban, programmatically mixed, age integrated, specific and flexible.by Gerhard J. van der Linde.M.Arch

Brandteknisk riskvÀrdering av Lasarettet i Landskrona

This report is a fire safety evaluation of the hospital Lasarettet i Landskrona, Sweden. The main objective was to guarantee the safety during evacuation in case of a fire in three of the hospitals infirmaries. This was done by a closer examination of one of these infirmaries. No regard has been taken for economic or environmental aspects, this report focuses only on human safety. Three fire scenarios were chosen from among 11 others through a risk matrix that was created. Fire risk assessment was done on these three with the help of computer simulation programs such as CFAST, ERM, DETACT-T2 and @RISK. Several proposals of actions have been validated with the help of these programs. Validation shows that if two specific of these were put into function the safety during an evacuation can be guaranteed if the time to de-tection can be verified correctly

Premonitory symptoms in migraine : A cross-sectional study in 2714 persons

Aim To describe the frequency and number of premonitory symptoms (PS) in migraine, the co-occurrence of different PS, and their association with migraine-related factors. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a validated questionnaire was sent to Finnish migraine families between 2002 and 2013 to obtain data on 14 predefined PS, migraine diagnoses, demographic factors, and migraine characteristics. The estimated response rate was 80%. Results Out of 2714 persons, 2223 were diagnosed with migraine. Among these, 77% reported PS, with a mean number of 3.0 symptoms compared to 30% (p Conclusion PS are experienced by a majority of migraineurs. More severe migraine is associated with a higher burden of PS. Since the material was not entirely representative of the general population of migraineurs, caution should be exercised in generalizing the results.Peer reviewe

Octet Baryon Magnetic Moments in the Chiral Quark Model with Configuration Mixing

    Get PDF
The Coleman-Glashow sum-rule for magnetic moments is always fulfilled in the chiral quark model, independently of SU(3) symmetry breaking. This is due to the structure of the wave functions, coming from the non-relativistic quark model. Experimentally, the Coleman-Glashow sum-rule is violated by about ten standard deviations. To overcome this problem, two models of wave functions with configuration mixing are studied. One of these models violates the Coleman-Glashow sum-rule to the right degree and also reproduces the octet baryon magnetic moments rather accurately.Comment: 22 pages, RevTe
