    Personal storytelling: Using Natural Language Generation for children with complex communication needs, in the wild...

    This paper describes a Natural Language Generation system (NLG), How was School Today? that automatically creates a personal narrative from sensor data and other media (photos and audio). It can be used by children with complex communication needs in schools to support interactive narrative about personal experiences. The robustness of story generation to missing data was identified as a key area for improvement in a feasibility study of the system at a first special needs school. This paper therefore suggests three possible methods for generating stories from unstructured data: clustering by voice recording, by location, or by time. Clustering based on voice recordings resulted in stories that were perceived as most easy to read, and to make most sense, by parents in a quantitative evaluation. This method was implemented in the live system, which was developed and evaluated iteratively at a second special needs school with children with different usage profiles. Open challenges and possibilities for NLG in augmented and alternative communication are also discussed

    Deletion of PEA-15 in mice is associated with specific impairments of spatial learning abilities

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>PEA-15 is a phosphoprotein that binds and regulates ERK MAP kinase and RSK2 and is highly expressed throughout the brain. PEA-15 alters c-Fos and CREB-mediated transcription as a result of these interactions. To determine if PEA-15 contributes to the function of the nervous system we tested mice lacking PEA-15 in a series of experiments designed to measure learning, sensory/motor function, and stress reactivity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report that PEA-15 null mice exhibited impaired learning in three distinct spatial tasks, while they exhibited normal fear conditioning, passive avoidance, egocentric navigation, and odor discrimination. PEA-15 null mice also had deficient forepaw strength and in limited instances, heightened stress reactivity and/or anxiety. However, these non-cognitive variables did not appear to account for the observed spatial learning impairments. The null mice maintained normal weight, pain sensitivity, and coordination when compared to wild type controls.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We found that PEA-15 null mice have spatial learning disabilities that are similar to those of mice where ERK or RSK2 function is impaired. We suggest PEA-15 may be an essential regulator of ERK-dependent spatial learning.</p

    The authors in this volume are collectively engaged with a historical puzzle: What happens if we examine the decade once we step out of the shadows cast by Thatcher? That is, does the decade of the 1980s as a significant and meaningful periodisation (equivalent to that of the 1960s) still work if Thatcher becomes but one part of the story rather than the story itself? The essays in this collection suggest that the 1980s only makes sense as a political period. They situate the 1980s within various longer term trajectories that show the events of the decade to be as much the consequence as the cause of bigger, long-term historical processes.     Systemic and microvascular comparison of Lactated Ringer’s solution, VIR-HBOC, and alpha-alpha crosslinked haemoglobin-based oxygen carrier in a rat 10% topload model

    AbstractMedical support for traumatic haemorrhage is lacking for far-forward combat units. VIR-HBOC (haemoglobin-based oxygen carrier) is a novel biological therapeutic under development as a field-stable resuscitation fluid. HBOCs have a long history of complications, chief among them is vasoconstrictive hypertension, which must be resolved before efficacy testing. As such, VIR-HBOC was compared against Lactated Ringers (LRS; vehicle) and a cross-linked haemoglobin (ααHb; a known vasoactive HBOC) in a rat topload model. Twenty-three male, Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to receive a 10% infusion (estimated total blood volume) of one test article while normotensive and under anaesthesia. Cardiovascular, blood chemistry and oximetry, microvascular arteriolar diameters, and interstitial tissue oxygenation parameters were measured. Circulatory half-life was calculated by plasma total haemoglobin. Treatment with ααHb caused immediate increases in mean arterial pressure compared to LRS and VIR-HBOC groups, and corresponding arteriolar vasoconstriction (p < .05), which did not occur for LRS or VIR-HBOC. Circulatory half-lives for VIR-HBOC and ααHb were calculated as 340 and 157 min, respectively. This first report of VIR-HBOC showed no evidence of a hypertensive or vasoactive effect. It was well-tolerated over the eight-hour time course of this topload model, which warrants further investigation in studies of haemorrhagic shock
