On the strange place of Public Art in contemporary Art Theory
This article is part of the idea, widely disseminated, that the concept of public art radically challenges the concepts of autonomous work of art. a primitivist rationale for Iberian and transatlantic modernisms
UIDB/00417/2020
UIDP/00417/2020This chapter discusses the Los Pintores Íntegros exhibition curated by Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1888–1963) in Madrid in 1915. While analysing the exhibition’s significance to the introduction of Cubism in the Spanish capital, this article also discusses how Gómez de la Serna’s rationale contributes in asserting a primitivist bedrock for the show—a topic that has yet to be addressed in the literature. Bearing in mind Patricia Leighten’s insights into how an “anticolonial crisis” can be associated with the praise of African art, and the concurrent pluralisation of the political, historical and aesthetic implications in modernist uses of primitivism arising from this paradigm, I will consider Gómez de la Serna’s thought along with some of the artworks shown in the 1915 exhibition. I will particularly address works exhibited by Diego Rivera (1886–1957) on that occasion. As I hope to demonstrate, the primitivist background of Los Pintores Íntegros paved the way for intertwining the local and the cosmopolitan (1) by calling for the Europeanising of Spain via the presentation of Cubism and the inscription of Madrid in the geography of international avant-garde exhibitions; and (2) by making the values of local folk art and popular culture interchangeable under the umbrella of Cubism, a process that, I will claim, encompassed the Spanishisation of the Cubist repertoire presented by the “íntegros” painters just before Diego Rivera fabricated an alternative primitivist myth of origins, grounded in Mexican ethnicity and culture.publishersversionpublishe
Identity and Politics in Eduardo Viana’s Olhão Landscapes
UIDB/00417/2020 UIDP/00417/2020This article studies the early 1920s Olhão views painted by Eduardo Viana (1881–1967). It analyses Viana’s turn to Algarvian-Mediterranean landscapes, while considering the emergence of Olhão as the Portuguese “cubist village” rendered just before its regionalisation by the fascist cultural industry. I contend that Viana’s vistas stem from his cosmopolitan profile and earlier avant-garde experiences, suggesting also that Olhão’s Mediterranean “cubist”- built environment offered Viana the prospect of a denationalised geography. The relationship between identity, place and politics will therefore be discussed.publishersversionpublishe
Distance and Distortion: Amadeo Souza Cardoso\u27s and Joan Miró\u27s War-years Painting and the Words that Fail Them
This essay considers art historical discourses on the work produced during the First World War by two painters born and living in the Iberian Peninsula: the Portuguese Amadeo de Souza Cardoso (1887–1918) and the Catalan Joan Miró (1893–1983). It considers the dialogues and relations maintained by these painters in their war-affected national artistic milieus and with the equally disrupted, international avant-garde circles, while discussing historiographical biased assumptions about production-places and their meanings, namely how localness was read as expressing isolation, distance, and lack of aesthetic significance

Development of a low-cost, non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on copper nanoparticles and laser-induced graphene towards wearable sensing
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), in 2021 approximately 537
million adults (20 to 79 years) suffered from diabetes, which corresponds to a total of
10.5 % of the world’s adult population, and its prevalence is predicted to rise dramatically
in the following years. Since glucose sensors constitute an effective approach for diabetes
management, by providing precise information about glucose levels, the glucose sensor
market has experienced enormous growth in the last few years. However, due to the
high cost of the commercially available glucose detection solutions and since the rise in
the number of diabetic patients has been more pronounced in low and middle-income
countries, there is a high demand for low-cost glucose monitoring systems.
In order to address the lack of inexpensive glucose sensors issue, this thesis aims
to meet the presented necessity in three strands: the development of a glucose sensor
based on copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG), fabricated
on paper substrate. Firstly, the LIG technique offers a rapid and simple method for the
production of graphitized material, which is an extremely conductive composite and
valuable for the sensing field, without the need for expensive and complex fabrication
techniques. Moreover, it allows the LIG production on paper, which is a more sustainable,
flexible, economic and easily accessible alternative than other commonly used substrates.
For the non-enzymatic glucose detection, a cheap copper precursor was selected for the
laser-induced CuNPs formation, presenting highly catalytic activity towards the glucose
oxidation. Thus, CuNPs and LIG composites were simultaneously synthesized in one
fabrication step, allowing for a large-scale sensor production.
LIG was fabricated with a sheet resistance value as low as 14.8 Ω sq−1. The sensor
showed good glucose sensing performance (267 μA mM−1 cm−2 sensitivity, 11 μM detection
limit, and high selectivity and reproducibility) with a linear range within the glucose
concentration range detected in sweat (20 μM - 1.79 mM), opening the possibility of
integrating this method into a wearable and non-invasive glucose monitoring system.
Assim, as Cu NPs
In a society in constant change, the globalization influences our everyday lives and brings the individual desire to be always changing.
The emergence of new design methodologies, combined with handcraft as a fundamental form of claiming a tangible and intangible heritage, has been assuming a leading role in the new contemporary design languages. The reflections reveal simultaneously the transfer of a set of values once with a more functional perspective, today in a communication perspective where the emotional part is assumed as a factor of primordial revelation. In parallel, we can also understand the similar role of design/handcrafts methodologies that have been transferring into an author design methodology, close to rapid prototyping technologies

Exploring motor neuron degeneration in ALS - prevention by glycoursodeoxycholic acid and signaling to microglia
Genética Molecular e BiomedicinaAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects mainly motor neurons. Neuronal pathology involves glial cells, in particular microglia. However it is not known how these cells interact with motor neurons. This is particularly important because till now no therapy has shown efficacy in ALS treatment.
Here, we aim (i) to evaluate the suitability of NSC-34, a hybrid cell line of neuroblastoma and motor neurons, as a model of ALS, (ii) to explore the reactivity of microglia to the neuronal released factors and (iii) to assess the efficacy of glycoursodeoxycholic acid (GUDCA), which already has shown beneficial effects in several neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases.
For that, we used NSC-34 cells transfected with human superoxide dismutase 1 (hSOD1), either wild type or mutated in G93A and the microglial N9 cell line. We observed mitochondrial dysfunction, energy impairment, NO production and metalloproteinase-9 activation, with consequent apoptosis in NSC-34/hSOD1G93A cells after 4 days of differentiation, in comparison to NSC-34/hSOD1wt cells. In addition, we established GUDCA as an anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory agent, able to prevent all the above mentioned features. Finally, released neuronal factors induced N9 microglia apoptosis and decreased their phagocytic ability.
Overall, our results emphasize NSC-34/hSOD1G93A cells as a good ALS model, highlight GUDCA as having beneficial effects and point to microglia neuroprotective failure as a determinant mechanism of ALS pathogenesis.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - PTDC/SAU-FAR/118787/2010, entitled “Are microglia a new potential target in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)?” to DB and PEst- OE/SAU/UI4013/2011 to iMed.U
