    Tailoring of unipolar strain in lead-free piezoelectrics using the ceramic/ceramic composite approach

    The electric-field-induced strain response mechanism in a polycrystalline ceramic/ceramic composite of relaxor and ferroelectric materials has been studied using in situ high-energy x-ray diffraction. The addition of ferroelectric phase material in the relaxor matrix has produced a system where a small volume fraction behaves independently of the bulk under an applied electric field. Inter- and intra-grain models of the strain mechanism in the composite material consistent with the diffraction data have been proposed. The results show that such ceramic/ceramic composite microstructure has the potential for tailoring properties of future piezoelectric materials over a wider range than is possible in uniform compositions.open1

    High temperature stress-induced "double loop-like" phase transitions in Bi-based perovskites

    Polycrystalline 0.94 (Bi1/2Na1/2) TiO 3-0.06 BaTiO3 samples were tested under uniaxial mechanical compression at various temperatures in the vicinity of the polar tetragonal to nonpolar tetragonal phase boundary. They are shown to display double loop-like stress-strain behavior, marked by a closed ferroelastic hysteresis loop. Thus, it forms a mechanical analog to the polarization-electric field hysteresis behavior of barium titanate above the Curie temperature. As temperature is increased there is an apparent loss of macroscopically observable ferroelasticity, despite the persistence of tetragonality. Macroscopic experimental results are discussed in conjunction with temperature-dependent and stress-dependent high-energy x-ray diffraction data. This reveals a phase transition below the Curie temperature, marked by a discontinuous change in lattice parameters and octahedral tilting during compressive mechanical loading.open231

    Local structure change evidenced by temperature-dependent elastic measurements: Case study on Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-based lead-free relaxor piezoceramics

    The temperature-dependent Young's modulus Y(T) of the lead-free piezoceramics of 0.8Bi(1/2)Na(1/2)TiO(3)-0.2Bi(1/2)K(1/2)TiO(3) (20BKT) and 0.96(0.8Bi(1/2)Na(1/2)TiO(3)-0.2Bi(1/2)K(1/2)TiO(3))-0.04 BiZn1/2Ti1/2O3 (4BZT) is measured with the impulse excitation technique and contrasted with corresponding dielectric and structural data. While the dielectric properties suggest a phase transition, the high resolution XRD patterns remain virtually unchanged from room temperature up to high temperatures, confirming no change in their long-range order. In contrast, the elastic properties indicate a broad and diffuse ferroelastic transition denoted by a minimum in Y(T). By analogy to the elastic and dielectric data of PbZrxTi1-xO3 and PLZT, it is concluded that 20BKT and 4BZT are relaxors with polar nanoregions embedded in a metrically cubic matrix. Interestingly, no indication for the freezing temperature was reflected in any of the employed measurement techniques. From the saturation of Y(T), it is suggested that the Burns temperature may be approximated as 700 degrees C. Moreover, it is found that the modification with the ternary end-member BiZn1/2Ti1/2O3 results in an increase in Young's modulus. A comparison with the Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-BaTiO3-K0.5Na0.5NbO3 yields the same results.open0

    Domain switching energies: Mechanical versus electrical loading in La-doped bismuth ferrite-lead titanate

    The mechanical stress-induced domain switching and energy dissipation in morphotropic phase boundary (1 - x)(Bi(1-y)La(y))FeO(3)-xPbTiO(3) during uniaxial compressive loading have been investigated at three different temperatures. The strain obtained was found to decrease with increasing lanthanum content, although a sharp increase in strain was observed for compositions doped with 7.5 and 10 at. % La. Increased domain switching was found in compositions with decreased tetragonality. This is discussed in terms of the competing influences of the amount of domain switching and the spontaneous strain on the macroscopic behavior under external fields. Comparison of the mechanically and electrically dissipated energy showed significant differences, discussed in terms of the different microscopic interactions of electric field and stress.open10

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage.     Perceived stressors of climate vulnerability across scales in the Savannah zone of Ghana: a participatory approach

    Smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa are confronted with climatic and non-climatic stressors. Research attention has focused on climatic stressors, such as rainfall variability, with few empirical studies exploring non-climatic stressors and how these interact with climatic stressors at multiple scales to affect food security and livelihoods. This focus on climatic factors restricts understanding of the combinations of stressors that exacerbate the vulnerability of farming households and hampers the development of holistic climate change adaptation policies. This study addresses this particular research gap by adopting a multi-scale approach to understand how climatic and non-climatic stressors vary, and interact, across three spatial scales (household, community and district levels) to influence livelihood vulnerability of smallholder farming households in the Savannah zone of northern Ghana. This study across three case study villages utilises a series of participatory tools including semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The incidence, importance, severity and overall risk indices for stressors are calculated at the household, community, and district levels. Results show that climatic and non-climatic stressors were perceived differently; yet, there were a number of common stressors including lack of money, high cost of farm inputs, erratic rainfall, cattle destruction of crops, limited access to markets and lack of agricultural equipment that crossed all scales. Results indicate that the gender of respondents influenced the perception and severity assessment of stressors on rural livelihoods at the community level. Findings suggest a mismatch between local and district level priorities that have implications for policy and development of agricultural and related livelihoods in rural communities. Ghana’s climate change adaptation policies need to take a more holistic approach that integrates both climatic and non-climatic factors to ensure policy coherence between national climate adaptation plans and District development plans

    High-performance shape-engineerable thermoelectric painting

    Output power of thermoelectric generators depends on device engineering minimizing heat loss as well as inherent material properties. However, the device engineering has been largely neglected due to the limited flat or angular shape of devices. Considering that the surface of most heat sources where these planar devices are attached is curved, a considerable amount of heat loss is inevitable. To address this issue, here, we present the shape-engineerable thermoelectric painting, geometrically compatible to surfaces of any shape. We prepared Bi2Te3-based inorganic paints using the molecular Sb2Te3 chalcogenidometalate as a sintering aid for thermoelectric particles, with ZT values of 0.67 for n-type and 1.21 for p-type painted materials that compete the bulk values. Devices directly brush-painted onto curved surfaces produced the high output power of 4.0 mW cm(-2). This approach paves the way to designing materials and devices that can be easily transferred to other applications.ope

    Post-Pandemic Needs of Unpaid Family and Friend Caregivers to Effectively Continue Caregiving Duties in one Northern Ontario Health Authority

    The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the support networks for older adults and caregivers as health and social care systems were forced to dramatically change the ways patients and clients interacted with providers, services, and programs. In Northern Ontario, caregivers are older, caring in more intense situations, more likely to be caring for multiple care recipients simultaneously and less likely to be in contact with health professionals. This research sought to explore the post-pandemic needs of caregivers in a Northern Ontario health catchment to better understand the needed supports. Using a collaborative and co-design approach with caregiver advisors within a qualitative description design, seven focus groups were conducted with 36 participants in total in February 2023. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to generate five themes from the transcripts: caregivers as the invisible but vital backbone of health and social care; amplified distress: navigating overwhelming demands; family fault lines exposed; contextualized care: the need for personalized supports; and empowering caregivers through training and supports. Our findings suggest that the pandemic significantly impacted the already vulnerable support networks for older adults and caregivers, as health and social care systems had to adapt to new restrictions and limitations. Caregivers were forced to take on additional responsibilities and cope with social isolation, leading to detrimental effects on their mental health and overall well-being

    A systematic review of intervention effects on potential mediators of children\u27s physical activity

    Background : Many interventions aiming to increase children’s physical activity have been developed and implemented in a variety of settings, and these interventions have previously been reviewed; however the focus of these reviews tends to be on the intervention effects on physical activity outcomes without consideration of the reasons and pathways leading to intervention success or otherwise. To systematically review the efficacy of physical activity interventions targeting 5-12 year old children on potential mediators and, where possible, to calculate the size of the intervention effect on the potential mediator. Methods : A systematic search identified intervention studies that reported outcomes on potential mediators of physical activity among 5-12 year old children. Original research articles published between 1985 and April 2012 were reviewed. Results : Eighteen potential mediators were identified from 31 studies. Positive effects on cognitive/psychological potential mediators were reported in 15 out of 31 studies. Positive effects on social environmental potential mediators were reported in three out of seven studies, and no effects on the physical environment were reported. Although no studies were identified that performed a mediating analysis, 33 positive intervention effects were found on targeted potential mediators (with effect sizes ranging from small to large) and 73% of the time a positive effect on the physical activity outcome was reported. Conclusions : Many studies have reported null intervention effects on potential mediators of children’s physical activity; however, it is important that intervention studies statistically examine the mediating effects of interventions so the most effective strategies can be implemented in future programs
