Nominal and inflation-linked government bonds: An assessment of arbitrage opportunities in UK Gilt Market

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Finance from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThis study is an assessment of the existence of deviations of the Law of One Price in the UK sovereign debt market. UK government issues two types of debt instruments: nominal gilts and inflation-linked (IL) gilts. Constructing a synthetic bond comprising the IL bonds and also inflation-swaps and gilt strips I was able to build a portfolio that pays to investor exactly the same cash-flow as nominal gilts, with the same maturity. I found that the weighted-average mispricing throughout the period of 2006-11 is only £0,155 per £100 notional. Though, if I restrain my analysis to the 2008-09 crisis period, this amount raises to £4,5 per £100 invested. The weighted-average mispricing can reach values of £21 per £100 notional or, if measured in yield terms, 235 basis points. I have also found evidence that available liquidity on the market and increases on index-linked gilts supply do play a significant role on monthly changes of mispricing in the UK market. I concluded that, although the global mispricing is not significant on UK gilt market, every pair of bonds in the sample presented huge and significant arbitrage opportunities in downturn periods

Convergence to self-similarity in an addition model with power-like time-dependent input of monomers

In this note we extend the results published in Ref. 1 to a coagulation system with Becker-Doring type interactions and time-dependent input of monomers J1(t)J_{1}(t) of power–like type: J1(t)/(αtω)→1J_{1}(t)/(\alpha t^{\omega }) \rightarrow 1 as t→∞t \rightarrow \infty, with α>0\alpha > 0 and ω>−12\omega > − \frac{1}{2}. The general framework of the proof follows Ref. 1 but a different strategy is needed at a number of points

Bifurcations analysis of the twist-Fréedericksz transition in a nematic liquid-crystal cell with pre-twist boundary conditions: the asymmetric case

    Get PDF
In the paper, Bifurcation analysis of the twist-Fréedericksz transition in a nematic liquid-crystal cell with pre-twist boundary conditions (2009 Eur. J. Appl. Math. 20, 269–287) by da Costa et al. the twist-Fréedericksz transition in a nematic liquid-crystal one-dimensional cell of lenght L was studied, imposing an antisymmetric net twist Dirichlet condition at the cell boundaries. In the present paper, we extend that study to the more general case of net twist Dirichlet conditions without any kind of symmetry restrictions. We use phase-plane analysis tools and appropriately defined time maps to obtain the bifurcation diagrams of the model when L is the bifurcation parameter, and related these diagrams with the one in the antisymmetric situation. The stability of the bifurcating solutions is investigated by applying the method of Maginu (1978 J. Math. Anal. Appl. 63, 224–243).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

New control algorithm for single-phase series active power filter

    Get PDF
This paper presents a single-phase Series Active Power Filter (Series APF) for mitigation of the load voltage harmonic content, while maintaining the voltage on the DC side regulated without the support of a voltage source. The proposed series active power filter control algorithm eliminates the additional voltage source to regulate the DC voltage, and with the adopted topology it is not used a coupling transformer to interface the series active power filter with the electrical power grid. The paper describes the control strategy which encapsulates the grid synchronization scheme, the compensation voltage calculation, the damping algorithm and the dead-time compensation. The topology and control strategy of the series active power filter have been evaluated in simulation software and simulations results are presented. Experimental results, obtained with a developed laboratorial prototype, validate the theoretical assumptions, and are within the harmonic spectrum limits imposed by the international recommendations of the IEEE-519 Standard
