Study to Show Thyself Approved: The Case for Continuing Clergy Education

There has been little study focused upon the role of the pastor\u27s personal growth and how it may relate to growth or the lack thereof in the local church. Although the problem of ministerial competence as a whole can not be fully addressed in the limited scope of this project, it is this writer\u27s contention that much of the plateau in church growth experienced in Southern Baptist Churches today may be predicated by the lack of ministerial training in the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention as a whole. It is the intent of this project to determine if there is the probability of a causal link between a pastor\u27s personal growth through study and how this impacts growth in the local church he serves. This project demonstrates that relationship by results of ACP reports from churches served by fifty-one pastors in the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists, serving their churches for a two or more year period, who responded to the initial survey presented herein. The results provide evidence that pastors pursuing further educational opportunities were more likely to be serving in churches that were growing, even in areas where there was a population decline

Helping Faculty Communicate the Value & Impact of Research

Communicating research to broad audiences is crucial in this funding climate (and fact-resistant era). This presentation offers an overview of the reasons why faculty should be communicating to non-specialist audiences (e.g., obligation, public mission, name recognition), as well as provide a model for teaching strategies to faculty—the Communicating Science Seminar Series developed for U-M Medical School researchers

We have presented to NORDP on our grassroots efforts to connect RD professionals across silos: to share best practices (and resources), increase collaboration, and provide professional development opportunities. We have had great success in defining RD and building interest—our second annual half-day RD conference in June 2017 drew almost 200 registrants

    Lessons from non-canonical splicing

    Get PDF
Recent improvements in experimental and computational techniques that are used to study the transcriptome have enabled an unprecedented view of RNA processing, revealing many previously unknown non-canonical splicing events. This includes cryptic events located far from the currently annotated exons and unconventional splicing mechanisms that have important roles in regulating gene expression. These non-canonical splicing events are a major source of newly emerging transcripts during evolution, especially when they involve sequences derived from transposable elements. They are therefore under precise regulation and quality control, which minimizes their potential to disrupt gene expression. We explain how non-canonical splicing can lead to aberrant transcripts that cause many diseases, and also how it can be exploited for new therapeutic strategies
