Experimental observation of hidden Berry curvature in inversion-symmetric bulk 2H-WSe2
We investigate the hidden Berry curvature in bulk 2H-WSe2 by utilizing the
surface sensitivity of angle resolved photoemission (ARPES). The symmetry in
the electronic structure of transition metal dichalcogenides is used to
uniquely determine the local orbital angular momentum (OAM) contribution to the
circular dichroism (CD) in ARPES. The extracted CD signals for the K and K'
valleys are almost identical but their signs, which should be determined by the
valley index, are opposite. In addition, the sign is found to be the same for
the two spin-split bands, indicating that it is independent of spin state.
These observed CD behaviors are what are expected from Berry curvature of a
monolayer of WSe2. In order to see if CD-ARPES is indeed representative of
hidden Berry curvature within a layer, we use tight binding analysis as well as
density functional calculation to calculate the Berry curvature and local OAM
of a monolayer WSe2. We find that measured CD-ARPES is approximately
proportional to the calculated Berry curvature as well as local OAM, further
supporting our interpretation.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Comparison of student's satisfaction on school food service environment by the eating place and gender
The purpose of this study was to compare student's satisfaction with school food service environment to improve the quality of middle school meal service. A survey was conducted of 680 students (boys 246, girls 433) from 6 middle schools providing school meals from October to November 2007. The questionnaires were directly distributed to the subjects for comparison of satisfaction of school meals depending on the eating place. As for the quantity of food, classroom group (3.40) expressed significantly higher satisfaction than cafeteria group (3.16, P < 0.01), but as for the satisfaction on hygiene, classroom group (2.76) showed significantly lower satisfaction than cafeteria group (3.03, P < 0.01). About the satisfaction of school meal environment, classroom group showed more satisfaction on distribution time, eating place, eating atmosphere (P < 0.001). The classroom group showed higher satisfaction than cafeteria group in cases of quantity, diversity of types of soup, dessert, and the cost of school meal. To improve eating place and hygiene of school meal, sufficient cafeteria space and pleasant environment is needed to be established
Understanding the Role of Electronic Effects in CO on the Pt-Sn Alloy Surface via Band Structure Measurements
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show direct evidence for charge transfer between adsorbed molecules and metal substrates, i.e., chemisorption of CO on Pt(111) and Pt-Sn/Pt(111) 2 x 2 surfaces. The observed band structures show a unique signature of charge transfer as CO atoms are adsorbed, revealing the roles of specific orbital characters participating in the chemisorption process. As the coverage of CO increases, the degree of charge transfer between CO and Pt shows a clear difference to that of Pt-Sn. With comparison to density functional theory calculation results, the observed distinct features in the band structure are interpreted as back-donation bonding states formed between the Pt molecular orbital and the 2 pi orbital of CO. Furthermore, the change in the surface charge concentration, measured from the Fermi surface area, shows that the Pt surface has a larger charge concentration change than the Pt-Sn surface upon CO adsorption. The differences between Pt and Pt-Sn surfaces are due to the effect of Pt-Sn intermetallic bonding on the interaction of CO with the surface
Minimal information for studies of extracellular vesicles (MISEV2023): From basic to advanced approaches
Extracellular vesicles (EVs), through their complex cargo, can reflect the state of their cell of origin and change the functions and phenotypes of other cells. These features indicate strong biomarker and therapeutic potential and have generated broad interest, as evidenced by the steady year-on-year increase in the numbers of scientific publications about EVs. Important advances have been made in EV metrology and in understanding and applying EV biology. However, hurdles remain to realising the potential of EVs in domains ranging from basic biology to clinical applications due to challenges in EV nomenclature, separation from non-vesicular extracellular particles, characterisation and functional studies. To address the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly evolving field, the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) updates its 'Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles', which was first published in 2014 and then in 2018 as MISEV2014 and MISEV2018, respectively. The goal of the current document, MISEV2023, is to provide researchers with an updated snapshot of available approaches and their advantages and limitations for production, separation and characterisation of EVs from multiple sources, including cell culture, body fluids and solid tissues. In addition to presenting the latest state of the art in basic principles of EV research, this document also covers advanced techniques and approaches that are currently expanding the boundaries of the field. MISEV2023 also includes new sections on EV release and uptake and a brief discussion of in vivo approaches to study EVs. Compiling feedback from ISEV expert task forces and more than 1000 researchers, this document conveys the current state of EV research to facilitate robust scientific discoveries and move the field forward even more rapidly
Electronic structures of CO adsorbed Pt-skin surface on Pt–Co and Pt–Ni alloys
© 2021 Korean Physical SocietyBy using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the electronic structures of Pt-skin layer of Pt–Co and Pt–Ni alloys with CO molecules on the surface. Measured Fermi surface maps and band dispersions reflect the signatures of chemical bonding between Pt-skin layer and CO molecules. Furthermore, the degree of chemical bonding strength of CO molecules, estimated from the energy shift of the participating bands, is found to be reduced on both Pt bimetallic alloys. Our results show how the surface band structure of Pt bimetallic alloys is modified with molecular orbitals of CO molecules on the surface, revealing the important role of the electronic structure in the determination of chemical properties of bimetallic alloys.11Nsciescopuskc
Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel thienopyrimidine derivatives as diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT-1) inhibitors
A novel series of thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine derivatives were synthesised and their inhibitory effects against diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT-1) were assessed. cis-Isomer 17a showed potent and selective inhibitory activity against DGAT-1 in SF9 cells. In addition, 17a had an acceptable pharmacokinetic profile and accumulated mainly in the small intestine and liver. Oral administration of 17a led to a significant reduction in plasma triacylglycerol level during an oral lipid tolerance test (OLTT) in murine and canine models. Taken together, 17a is a high-quality candidate that deserves further investigation
18p Deletion Syndrome Originating from Rare Unbalanced Whole-Arm Translocation between Chromosomes 13 and 18: A Case Report and Literature Review
18p deletion (18p-) syndrome is a rare chromosome abnormality that has a wide range of phenotypes, with short stature, intellectual disability, and facial dysmorphism being the main clinical features. Here, we report the first case in Korea of a 16-year-old male adolescent with 18p- syndrome resulting from de novo unbalanced whole-arm translocation between chromosomes 13 and 18 (45, XY, der(13;18)(q10:q10)). Three rare clinical findings were discovered that had not been reported in the previous literature; morbid obesity without other hormonal disturbances, rib cage deformity leading to the direct compression of the liver, and lumbar spondylolisthesis at the L5-S1 level. This case expands the phenotypic spectrum of 18p- syndrome and highlights the importance of considering chromosomal analysis, since this syndrome can be easily overlooked in a clinical setting, especially without distinctive symptoms of other organs, due to its nonspecific but typical features of short stature and mild intellectual disability with a mildly dysmorphic face. Moreover, since not all cases of 18p- syndrome with unbalanced translocation (13;18) show the same phenotype, multidisciplinary examinations and follow-up seem to be important to monitor evolving and developing clinical manifestations and to predict prognosis in advance associated with the specific genes of 18p breakpoint regions
Therapeutic Effects of Saline Groundwater Solution Baths on Atopic Dermatitis: A Pilot Study

Saline groundwater, collected from the east coast of Korea, has been shown to have protective effects against 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene- (DNCB-) induced atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions in the murine model. Objectives. To determine the effects of saline groundwater solution baths as a treatment of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis. Methods. Twenty-four subjects with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis were instructed to take a bath in saline groundwater solution for 20 minutes per day for two weeks. Evaluations were performed at baseline and week 2, including SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index, corneometry, transepidermal water loss, visual analogue scale for pruritus, and collection of adverse events. Results. Subjects showed significant improvement with respect to the SCORAD index, skin hydration, transepidermal water loss, and pruritus at week 2 when compared with the baseline. Conclusion. Baths in saline groundwater solution may be an alternative therapeutic strategy for treating atopic dermatitis
The Efficacy of Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
Background: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) on functional performance, exercise-related oxygen saturation, and health-related quality of life among patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Methods: A total of 25 patients with IPF (13 in the PR group and 12 in the non-PR group) were enrolled between August 2019 and October 2021 at Haeundae-Paik Hospital in the Republic of Korea. A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), six-minute walk test (6MWT), pulmonary function test (PFT), Saint George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), muscle strength test, and bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed in each group at baseline and after eight weeks of PR. Results: The mean age was 68 years of age and most subjects were male. Baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups. The distance during 6MWT after PR was significantly improved in the PR group (inter-group p-value = 0.002). VO2max and VE/VCO2 slopes showed a significant difference after eight weeks only in the PR group, but the rate of change did not differ significantly from the non-PR group. Total skeletal muscle mass, PFT variables, and SGRQ scores did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusions: PR improved exercise capacity, as measured using CPET and 6 MWT. Further studies in larger samples are needed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of PR in IPF patients
