Engagement in Music Education in the Upper Elementary Grades

    Get PDF
The research was based on observations from the researcher’s time in the elementary music classroom and addresses the decline of willingness to participate in students in the upper elementary grades. The research addresses the following two research questions; how do family and student attitudes and dynamics towards singing affect student participation in singing in elementary music class? And in what ways could singing be presented and included in instruction to better engage the older elementary learner? The researcher selected fourth and fifth grade students as the participants in the study. Students were given surveys asking questions about participation and attitudes towards music and were also observed. The researcher found that there was some correlation between family attitudes and students’ willingness to participate in music related activities. The researcher also found that students prefer to experience music through instruments and technology. The researcher hopes to incorporate more family education and community outreach, along with more technology-based instruction to her methods of music education and will encourage other music educators to do the same

The IMO system as source for legal transplants for a STM regime

Already in 1983, Czech astronomer Luboš Perek suggested to study general ideas underlying existing traffic regulation with a view to apply them to traffic in [outer space] [1]. As this proposition is still valid today, the paper chooses to look for \u27legal transplants\u27 for a Space Traffic Management (STM) regime in the realm of maritime law. The paper\u27s research turns to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is the UN specialized organization responsible for the development of global rules for shipping traffic. The IMO is recognized to be one of the most successful organizations in developing international law for the conservation and protection of the marine environment [2]. Under IMO, well-known treaties such as the SOLAS, MARPOL or COLREG conventions were adopted and later ratified by a large number of governments. Further, in 2017, thus only recently, the IMO Polar Code was adopted due to an increase of shipping in the polar waters. In the quest to research what can potentially be borrowed from the IMO system for a STM regime, the paper\u27s focus is not on individual substantive traffic rules, which are by their very nature technical and not legal in content. The paper rather explores IMO\u27s relationship to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS or the so-called Constitution of the oceans) and IMO\u27s law-making process. In particular, it tries to understand the \u27tacit acceptance procedure\u27, which allows IMO to respond rapidly to new requirements in the shipping industry. In order to be sustainable over the long term, it is crucial for a STM regime to provide for flexibility, too. Lease accounting convergence project: What are the impacts of the new accounting standards?

Current US GAAP lease accounting standards, with its four part test, and two forms of accounting for leases has existed since the 1970s. Due to cases such as WorldCom and Enron, where the assigning of other assets to remote bankruptcy entities has caused some of the world\u27s largest bankruptcies and misleading financials. The SEC called for elimination of all off sheet financial arrangements to change the guidelines of financial reporting to better reflect the economic transaction and not distort it. The new proposal has created a Right-of-Use model where new assets and liabilities will be created to represent the value of the lease on the lessee\u27s books. My research explores the repercussions of the accounting proposal and implications the changes can create
