Simultaneous detection of the nonlinear restoring and excitation of a forced nonlinear oscillation: an integral approach

    Get PDF
We address in this article, how to calculate the restoring characteristic and the excitation of a nonlinear forced oscillating system. Under the assumption that the forced nonlinear oscillator has a periodic solution with period, we constructed a system of linear equations by introducing time-dependent multipliers. The periodicity assumption helps simplify the system of linear equations. The stability and uniqueness are also presented for the inverse problem. Numerical testing is conducted to show the effectiveness of our presented methodology.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Financial knowledge of university students in Korea and Germany

This study compares the financial knowledge of Korean (N = 1006) and German (N = 1346) university students. The country-specific adaptations of the US-American Test of Financial Literacy was used to assess financial knowledge. Financial knowledge can be divided into three areas (everyday money management; banking; insurance). German students show a slightly higher knowledge of everyday money management and insurance. Korean students tend to be stronger in the area banking. The paper examines the impact of gender on financial knowledge and the role of financial information gathering. A gender difference is determined in Germany, but not in Korea. Male students in Germany score higher than female students. An analysis of variance shows that Korean as well as German students who inform themselves more frequently about financial topics achieve a higher financial knowledge score. The article shows that it is possible to validly measure financial knowledge in Germany and Korea, which have different economic systems

A Numerical Approach to Static Deflection Analysis of an Infinite Beam on a Nonlinear Elastic Foundation: One-Way Spring Model

    Get PDF
A numerical procedure proposed by Jang et al. (2011) is applied for the numerical analyzing of static deflection of an infinite beam on a nonlinear elastic foundation. And one-way spring model is used for the modeling of fully nonlinear elastic foundation. The nonlinear procedure involves Green’s function technique and an iterative method using the pseudo spring coefficient. The workability of the numerical procedure is demonstrated through showing the validity of the solution and the convergence test with some external loads

Development of a 2-Channel Embedded Infrared Fiber-Optic Temperature Sensor Using Silver Halide Optical Fibers

A 2-channel embedded infrared fiber-optic temperature sensor was fabricated using two identical silver halide optical fibers for accurate thermometry without complicated calibration processes. In this study, we measured the output voltages of signal and reference probes according to temperature variation over a temperature range from 25 to 225 °C. To decide the temperature of the water, the difference between the amounts of infrared radiation emitted from the two temperature sensing probes was measured. The response time and the reproducibility of the fiber-optic temperature sensor were also obtained. Thermometry with the proposed sensor is immune to changes if parameters such as offset voltage, ambient temperature, and emissivity of any warm object. In particular, the temperature sensing probe with silver halide optical fibers can withstand a high temperature/pressure and water-chemistry environment. It is expected that the proposed sensor can be further developed to accurately monitor temperature in harsh environments

Lomerizine inhibits LPS-mediated neuroinflammation and tau hyperphosphorylation by modulating NLRP3, DYRK1A, and GSK3α/ÎČ

IntroductionLomerizine is a calcium channel blocker that crosses the blood–brain barrier and is used clinically in the treatment of migraines. However, whether lomerizine is beneficial in modulating neuroinflammatory responses has not been tested yet.MethodsTo assess the potential of lomerizine for repurposing as a treatment for neuroinflammation, we investigated the effects of lomerizine on LPS-induced proinflammatory responses in BV2 microglial cells, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) excitatory neurons differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and in LPS-treated wild type mice.ResultsIn BV2 microglial cells, lomerizine pretreatment significantly reduced LPS-evoked proinflammatory cytokine and NLRP3 mRNA levels. Similarly, lomerizine pretreatment significantly suppressed the increases in Iba-1, GFAP, proinflammatory cytokine and NLRP3 expression induced by LPS in wild-type mice. In addition, lomerizine posttreatment significantly decreased LPS-stimulated proinflammatory cytokine and SOD2 mRNA levels in BV2 microglial cells and/or wild-type mice. In LPS-treated wild-type mice and AD excitatory neurons differentiated from iPSCs, lomerizine pretreatment ameliorated tau hyperphosphorylation. Finally, lomerizine abolished the LPS-mediated activation of GSK3α/ÎČ and upregulation of DYRK1A, which is responsible for tau hyperphosphorylation, in wild-type mice.DiscussionThese data suggest that lomerizine attenuates LPS-mediated neuroinflammatory responses and tau hyperphosphorylation and is a potential drug for neuroinflammation- or tauopathy-associated diseases

A logical network-based drug-screening platform for Alzheimer’s disease representing pathological features of human brain organoids

Developing effective drugs for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, has been difficult because of complicated pathogenesis. Here, we report an efficient, network-based drug-screening platform developed by integrating mathematical modeling and the pathological features of AD with human iPSC-derived cerebral organoids (iCOs), including CRISPR-Cas9-edited isogenic lines. We use 1300 organoids from 11 participants to build a high-content screening (HCS) system and test blood–brain barrier-permeable FDA-approved drugs. Our study provides a strategy for precision medicine through the convergence of mathematical modeling and a miniature pathological brain model using iCOs. © 2021, The Author(s).1

A numerical experiment on a new piston-type wavemaker: Shallow water approximation

    No full text
In this paper, we present a numerical experiment on a new piston-type wavemaker using a recently proposed piston-type wavemaker theory. The theory was primarily derived from the classical Boussinesq equation, based on the Pseudo-parameter Iteration Method (PIM). We first use the new theory to observe low amplitude propagating solitary waves and cnoidal waves, whereby we see the workability and validity of the theory. We further succeed in obtaining the graph of a mean power characteristic, in the range of 0.4 ≀kh≀ 1.0, of the new piston-type wavemaker from the new theory
