    Environmental impact assessments of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir on the most hyperconcentrated laden river, Yellow River, China

    The Yellow River is the most hyperconcentrated sediment-laden river in the world. Throughout recorded history, the Lower Yellow River (LYR) experienced many catastrophic flood and drought events. To regulate the LYR, a reservoir was constructed at Xiaolangdi that became operational in the early 2000s. An annual water-sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) was then implemented, aimed at flood control, sediment reduction, regulated water supply, and power generation. This study examines the eco-environmental and socioenvironmental impacts of Xiaolangdi Reservoir. In retrospect, it is found that the reservoir construction phase incurred huge financial cost and required large-scale human resettlement. Subsequent reservoir operations affected the local geological environment, downstream riverbed erosion, evolution of the Yellow River delta, water quality, and aquatic biodiversity. Lessons from the impact assessment of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir are summarized as follows: (1) The construction of large reservoirs is not merely an engineering challenge but must also be viewed in terms of resource exploitation, environmental protection, and social development; (2) long-term systems for monitoring large reservoirs should be established, and decision makers involved at national policy and planning levels must be prepared to react quickly to the changing impact of large reservoirs; and (3) the key to solving sedimentation in the LYR is not Xiaolangdi Reservoir but instead soil conservation in the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin. Proper assessment of the impacts of large reservoirs will help promote development strategies that enhance the long-term sustainability of dam projects

    Triglycerides Mediate the Influence of Body Mass Index on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in a Non-Obese Chinese Population with Normal Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels

    Introduction: Over 25% of the world’s population has non-obese or lean non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the prevalence is higher than average in Asia. The present study focused on the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and non-obese NAFLD in non-overweight people in China, particularly the influence of triglycerides (TG) in the pathogenesis of non-obese NAFLD. The findings suggest new treatments for NAFLD patients with normal BMI, as well as provide an early warning system for the understanding and prevention of NAFLD in non-obese patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 159,959 Chinese subjects with BMI <24 kg/m2 and normal levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c). The average age was 40.21 ± 13.88 years, and males accounted for 45.7%. A total of 15,907 (9.94%) patients with NAFLD were diagnosed by ultrasonography. Biochemical indicators were measured using an automated analyzer (Abbott AxSYM). The BMI (kg/m2) was calculated from the weight (kg)/height in square meters (m2). The BMI quartile was used as the column-stratified variable to determine the baseline distribution, and logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between NAFLD and its risk factors, with multiple logistic regression used to assess the relationships between BMI or TG and NAFLD and multivariate linear regression used to analyze the association between BMI and TG, while mediation analysis was used to assess the mediation effect of TG. Results: After adjustment of all covariates, the odds ratios were 1.788 (95% CI: 1.749–1.829; p < 0.00001) and 1.491 (95% CI: 1.451–1.532; p < 0.00001) for the association between BMI and TG with NAFLD incidence. The multivariate linear regression coefficient of BMI and TG was β = 0.027 (95% CI: 0.023–0.030; p < 0.00001). Mediation analysis showed that BMI contributed to 10.81% of lean NAFLD with a mediation effect of 2.98%. Conclusion: In a Chinese population with BMI <24 kg/m2 and normal LDL-c levels, BMI and TG were found to be independent predictors of NAFLD. The direct effect of BMI on non-obese NAFLD was 10.41%.     Is the NH4+-induced growth inhibition caused by the NH4+ form of the nitrogen source or by soil acidification?

    Soil acidification often occurs when the concentration of ammonium (NH4+) in soil rises, such as that observed in farmland. Both soil acidification and excess NH4+ have serious adverse effects on crop growth and food production. However, we still do not know which of these two inhibitors has a greater impact on the growth of crops, and the degree of their inhibitory effect on crop growth have not been accurately evaluated. 31 wheat cultivars originating in various areas of China were planted under 5 mM sole NH4+ (ammonium nitrogen, AN) or nitrate nitrogen in combined with two pH levels resembling acidified conditions (5.0 and 6.5). The results showed that the shoots and roots biomass were severely reduced by AN in both and these reduction effects were strengthened by a low medium pH. The concentration of free NH4+ and amino acids, the glutamine synthetase activity were significantly higher, but the total soluble sugar content was reduced under NH4+ conditions, and the glutamine synthetase activity was reduced by a low medium pH. Cultivar variance was responsible for the largest proportion of the total variance in plant dry weight, leaf area, nodal root number, total root length and root volume; the nitrogen (N) form explains most of the variation in N and C metabolism; the effects of pH were the greatest for plant height and root average diameter. So, soil acidification and excess NH4+ would cause different degrees of inhibition effects on different plant tissues. The findings are expected to be useful for applying effective strategies for reducing NH4+ stress in the field

    WISE J233237.05–505643.5: A Double-peaked, Broad-lined Active Galactic Nucleus with a Spiral-shaped Radio Morphology

    We present radio continuum mapping, optical imaging, and spectroscopy of the newly discovered double-peaked, broad-lined active galactic nucleus (AGN) WISE J233237.05–505643.5 at redshift z = 0.3447. This source exhibits an FR-I and FR-II hybrid morphology, characterized by a bright core, jet, and Doppler-boosted lobe structures in Australian Telescope Compact Array continuum maps at 1.5, 5.6, and 9 GHz. Unlike most FR-II objects, W2332–5056 is hosted by a disk-like galaxy. The core has a projected 5'' linear radio feature that is perpendicular to the curved primary jet, hinting at unusual and complex activity within the inner 25 kpc. The multi-epoch, optical-near-IR photometric measurements indicate significant variability over a 3-20 yr baseline from the AGN component. Gemini South optical data show unusual double-peaked emission-line features: the centroids of the broad-lined components of Hα and Hβ are blueshifted with respect to the narrow lines and host galaxy by ~3800 km s^(–1). We examine possible cases that involve single or double supermassive black holes in the system and discuss the required future investigations to disentangle the mysterious nature of this system

    By investigating Yanjiao and Beijing sub-centre, on both sides of the Chaobai River, it reveals that today more than 40% of the population in Yanjiao travels to and from Beijing for work.  Because of the inequities of political and administrative systems, as well as massive and uncontrolled urbanization, Yanjiao is losing its identity gradually.  Comparing Yanjiao with Beijing Sub-centre on the urban configuration, building typology, topography, and hydrology, the conclusion is that there are: 1) traditional small-scale allays and buildings, 2) significant unidirectional commuter flow to Beijing, and 3) the Chaobai River is not only the administrative boundary but also the development boundary between the two cities. To optimize this situation, three different levels of planning and design have been made:1.Regional planning: To improve the sustainable development situation of Yanjiao through inter-regional synergistic development, while creating more equal urban spaces with a water-based landscape structure. 2.Urban Design: By extracting the traditional urban morphology, local lifestyles, three primary interventions have been created for the design part. Through these three interfaces, the site links the surrounding urban space with a good spatial transition.3.Detailed design: Intervention and feeling of spatial qualities are shown through the rendering of the three interfaces

    Exe-Muscle: An Exercised Human Skeletal Muscle Gene Expression Database

    Human muscle tissue undergoes dynamic changes in gene expression during exercise, and the dynamics of these genes are correlated with muscle adaptation to exercise. A database of gene expression changes in human muscle before and after exercise was established for data mining. A web-based searchable database, Exe-muscle, was developed using microarray sequencing data, which can help users to retrieve gene expression at different times. Search results provide a complete description of target genes or genes with specific expression patterns. We can explore the molecular mechanisms behind exercise science by studying the changes in muscle gene expression over time before and after exercise. Based on the high-throughput microarray data before and after human exercise, a human pre- and post-exercise database was created using web-based database technology, which researchers can use or share their gene expression data.
