    Theory for charge and orbital density-wave states in manganite La0.5_{0.5}Sr1.5_{1.5}MnO4_4

    We investigate the high temperature phase of layered manganites, and demonstrate that the charge-orbital phase transition without magnetic order in La0.5_{0.5}Sr1.5_{1.5}MnO4_4 can be understood in terms of the density wave instability. The orbital ordering is found to be induced by the nesting between segments of Fermi surface with different orbital characters. The simultaneous charge and orbital orderings are elaborated with a mean field theory. The ordered orbitals are shown to be dx2−y2±d3z2−r2d_{x^2-y^2} \pm d_{3z^2-r^2}.Comment: published versio

    SSAH: Semi-supervised Adversarial Deep Hashing with Self-paced Hard Sample Generation

    Deep hashing methods have been proved to be effective and efficient for large-scale Web media search. The success of these data-driven methods largely depends on collecting sufficient labeled data, which is usually a crucial limitation in practical cases. The current solutions to this issue utilize Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to augment data in semi-supervised learning. However, existing GAN-based methods treat image generations and hashing learning as two isolated processes, leading to generation ineffectiveness. Besides, most works fail to exploit the semantic information in unlabeled data. In this paper, we propose a novel Semi-supervised Self-pace Adversarial Hashing method, named SSAH to solve the above problems in a unified framework. The SSAH method consists of an adversarial network (A-Net) and a hashing network (H-Net). To improve the quality of generative images, first, the A-Net learns hard samples with multi-scale occlusions and multi-angle rotated deformations which compete against the learning of accurate hashing codes. Second, we design a novel self-paced hard generation policy to gradually increase the hashing difficulty of generated samples. To make use of the semantic information in unlabeled ones, we propose a semi-supervised consistent loss. The experimental results show that our method can significantly improve state-of-the-art models on both the widely-used hashing datasets and fine-grained datasets

    Robust IGF-I overexpression induces ocular angiogenesis in mice. To investigate the effect of subtle IGF-I overexpression, we examined the ocular phenotype of IGF-II promoter-driven IGF-I transgenic mice. Despite 2.5-fold elevation of IGF-I mRNA in the retina and 29 and 52% increase of IGF-I protein in the retina and aqueous humor, respectively, no ocular abnormality was observed in these transgenics. This was correlated with unaltered VEGF mRNA levels in the transgenic retina. The transgene was also associated with an attenuated laser-induced choroidal neovascularization. Differential expression levels and pattern of IGF-I gene may underlie the different retinal phenotypes in different transgenic lines

    Differentiation between tuberculosis and leukemia in abdominal and pelvic lymph nodes: evaluation with contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography

    PURPOSE: To compare the characteristics of tubercular vs. leukemic involvement of abdominopelvic lymph nodes using multidetector computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed multidetector computed tomography features including lymph node size, shape, enhancement patterns, and anatomical distribution, in 106 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed, untreated tuberculosis (55 patients; 52%) or leukemia (51 patients; 48%). In patients with leukemia, 32 (62.7%) had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and 19 (37.3%) had acute leukemias; of these, 10 (19.6%) had acute myeloid leukemia, and 9 (17.6%) had acute lymphocytic leukemia. RESULTS: The lower para-aortic (30.9% for tuberculosis, 63.2% for acute leukemias and 87.5% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and inguinal (9.1% for tuberculosis, 57.9% for acute leukemias and 53.1% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) lymph nodes were involved more frequently in the three types of leukemia than in tuberculosis (both with

    Purpose: To investigate the effect of three anaesthetic drugs on postoperative recovery, regulatory T cells and T cell subset levels in elderly patients.Methods: The patients were randomly divided into groups A, B and C (42 patients per group). Group A received intravenous remifentanil, dexamethasone, dexmedetomidine and propofol, followed by continuous intraoperative inhalation of sevoflurane and continuous intravenous pumping of remifentanil. Group B was given intravenous propofol and midazolam, followed by continuous intraoperative inhalation of sevoflurane, while Group C received intravenous etomidate and rocuronium, with continuous intraoperative inhalation of sevoflurane. The preoperative or 24-h postoperative T regulatory cells (CD4+ CD25+) and T cell subsets (CD4+ and CD8+) were determined for each group.Results: MMSE scores in the three groups were lower than their pre-operation scores (p < 0.05). There were significant reductions in 24-h postoperative serum CD4+ CD25+ and CD4+ levels, with higher reductions in group B (p < 0.05). In contrast, CD8+ increased in all groups, but was lower in group B than in the other two groups (p < 0.05).Conclusion: These findings strongly suggest that propofol, midazolam and sevoflurane have rapid onset of action and recovery, which improves the comfort of patients while decreasing negative impact on the function of the immune system.     Adaptive gradient-based block compressive sensing with sparsity for noisy images

    This paper develops a novel adaptive gradient-based block compressive sensing (AGbBCS_SP) methodology for noisy image compression and reconstruction. The AGbBCS_SP approach splits an image into blocks by maximizing their sparsity, and reconstructs images by solving a convex optimization problem. In block compressive sensing, the commonly used square block shapes cannot always produce the best results. The main contribution of our paper is to provide an adaptive method for block shape selection, improving noisy image reconstruction performance. The proposed algorithm can adaptively achieve better results by using the sparsity of pixels to adaptively select block shape. Experimental results with different image sets demonstrate that our AGbBCS_SP method is able to achieve better performance, in terms of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and computational cost, than several classical algorithms
