    The nonlinear damping of Bose-Einstein condensate oscillations at ultra-low temperatures

    We analyze the damping of the transverse breathing mode in an elongated trap at ultralow temperatures. The damping occurs due to the parametric resonance entailing the energy transfer to the longitudinal degrees of freedom. It is found that the nonlinear coupling between the transverse and discrete longitudinal modes can result in an anomalous behavior of the damping as a function of time with the partially reversed pumping of the breathing mode. The picture revealed explains the results observed in [16]

    Water use of electricity technologies: A global meta-analysis

    Understanding the water use of power production is an important step to both a sustainable energy transition and an improved understanding of water conservation measures. However, there are large differences across the literature that currently present barriers to decision making. Here, the compiled inventory of the blue water use of power production from existing studies allowed to uncover the characteristics of water use and to investigate current uncertainties. The results show that photovoltaics, wind power, and run-of-the-river hydropower consume relatively little water, whereas reservoir hydropower and woody and herbaceous biomass can have an extremely large water footprint. The water consumption of power production can differ greatly across countries due to different geographic conditions. Only a few studies provided the values for the influencing factors of water use, such as the capacity factor. Values that are reported came mainly from assumptions and other literature rather than direct measurement. Omitting a life cycle stage may lead to significant underestimations. Water scarcity is attracting more attention, but the few existing results are not useable for a regional comparison due to data gaps and inconsistent measurements. In the future, a clear and detailed definition of the water footprint and system boundary of power production is essential to improving comparisons and energy systems modelling.Industrial Ecolog

    On the sample size dependence of the critical current density in MgB2_2 superconductors

    Sample size dependent critical current density has been observed in magnesium diboride superconductors. At high fields, larger samples provide higher critical current densities, while at low fields, larger samples give rise to lower critical current densities. The explanation for this surprising result is proposed in this study based on the electric field generated in the superconductors. The dependence of the current density on the sample size has been derived as a power law jāˆR1/nj\propto R^{1/n} (nn is the nn factor characterizing Eāˆ’jE-j curve E=Ec(j/jc)nE=E_c(j/j_c)^n). This dependence provides one with a new method to derive the nn factor and can also be used to determine the dependence of the activation energy on the current density.Comment: Revtex, 4 pages, 5 figure

    Coisotropic deformations of associative algebras and dispersionless integrable hierarchies

    The paper is an inquiry of the algebraic foundations of the theory of dispersionless integrable hierarchies, like the dispersionless KP and modified KP hierarchies and the universal Whitham's hierarchy of genus zero. It stands out for the idea of interpreting these hierarchies as equations of coisotropic deformations for the structure constants of certain associative algebras. It discusses the link between the structure constants and the Hirota's tau function, and shows that the dispersionless Hirota's bilinear equations are, within this approach, a way of writing the associativity conditions for the structure constants in terms of the tau function. It also suggests a simple interpretation of the algebro-geometric construction of the universal Whitham's equations of genus zero due to Krichever.Comment: minor misprints correcte

    No Association Between Screening for Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Reduced Cancer-Related Mortality in Patients With Cirrhosis

    Background & Aims: Screening patients with cirrhosis for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been recommended. We conducted a matched caseā€“control study within the US Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system to determine whether screening by abdominal ultrasonography (USS) and/or by measuring serum level of Ī±-fetoprotein (AFP) was associated with decreased cancer-related mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Methods: We defined cases (n = 238) as patients with cirrhosis who died of HCC from January 1, 2013 through August 31, 2015 and had been in VA care with a diagnosis of cirrhosis for at least 4 years before the diagnosis of HCC. We matched each case to 1 control (n = 238), defined as a patient with cirrhosis who did not die of HCC and had been in VA care for at least 4 years before the date of the matched case's HCC diagnosis. Controls were matched to cases by year of cirrhosis diagnosis, race and ethnicity, age, sex, etiology of cirrhosis, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, and VA medical center. We identified all USS and serum AFP tests performed within 4 years before the date of HCC diagnosis in cases or the equivalent index date in controls and determined by chart extraction (blinded to case or control status) whether these tests were performed for screening. Results: There were no significant differences between cases and controls in the proportions of patients who underwent screening USS (52.9% vs 54.2%), screening measurement of serum AFP (74.8% vs 73.5%), screening USS or measurement of serum AFP (81.1% vs 79.4%), or screening USS and measurement of serum AFP (46.6% vs 48.3%) within 4 years before the index date, with or without adjusting for potential confounders. There also was no difference in receipt of these screening tests within 1, 2, or 3 years before the index date. Conclusions: In a matched caseā€“control study of the VA health care system, we found that screening patients with cirrhosis for HCC by USS, measurement of serum AFP, either test, or both tests was not associated with decreased HCC-related mortality. We encourage additional caseā€“control studies to evaluate the efficacy of screening for HCC in other health care systems, in which available records are sufficiently detailed to enable identification of the indication for USS and AFP tests

    PDGF-B gene therapy accelerates bone engineering and oral implant osseointegration

    Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) stimulates repair of healing-impaired chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers and periodontal lesions. However, limitations in predictability of tissue regeneration occur due, in part, to transient growth factor bioavailability in vivo. Here, we report that gene delivery of PDGF-B stimulates repair of oral implant extraction socket defects. Alveolar ridge defects were created in rats and were treated at the time of titanium implant installation with a collagen matrix containing an adenoviral (Ad) vector encoding PDGF-B (5.5 x 10(8) or 5.5 x 10(9) pfu ml(-1)), Ad encoding luciferase (Ad-Luc; 5.5 x 10(9) pfu ml(-1); control) or recombinant human PDGF-BB protein (rhPDGF-BB, 0.3 mg ml(-1)). Bone repair and osseointegration were measured through backscattered scanning electron microscopy, histomorphometry, micro-computed tomography and biomechanical assessments. Furthermore, a panel of local and systemic safety assessments was performed. Results indicated that bone repair was accelerated by Ad-PDGF-B and rhPDGF-BB delivery compared with Ad-Luc, with the high dose of Ad-PDGF-B more effective than the low dose. No significant dissemination of the vector construct or alteration of systemic parameters was noted. In summary, gene delivery of Ad-PDGF-B shows regenerative and safety capabilities for bone tissue engineering and osseointegration in alveolar bone defects comparable with rhPDGF-BB protein delivery in vivo
