    Nonlinear dynamics and control of electrodynamic tether for deorbiting space debris

    The ever increasing population of space debris poses a great threat to the sustainable development of space industry. Electrodynamic tether has been recognized as a promising technology for the active removal of space debris from overpopulated orbital regions. A typical electrodynamic tether system consists of two end-bodies connected by a conductive tether in space. The electric current flowing in the tether will interact with the magnetic field of the Earth to generate the Lorentz force, by which the system can be deorbited almost without expending propellant. The dynamics and control of any electrodynamic tether system is highly nonlinear by nature and have two critical aspects for practical application: the deployment of electrodynamic tether and the attitude stability during the deorbiting process. This paper summarizes some recent efforts made to address these two issues by the authors’ research team in Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Moreover, some open problems deserving future investigation are discussed

    Diversity of Woodland Communities and Plant Species along an Altitudinal Gradient in the Guancen Mountains, China

    Study on plant diversity is the base of woodland conservation. The Guancen Mountains are the northern end of Luliang mountain range in North China. Fifty-three quadrats of 10 m × 20 m of woodland communities were randomly established along an altitudinal gradient. Data for species composition and environmental variables were measured and recorded in each quadrat. To investigate the variation of woodland communities, a Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN) and a Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) were conducted, while species diversity indices were used to analyse the relationships between species diversity and environmental variables in this study. The results showed that there were eight communities of woodland vegetation; each of them had their own characteristics in composition, structure, and environment. The variation of woodland communities was significantly related to elevation and also related to slope, slope aspect, and litter thickness. The cumulative percentage variance of species-environment relation for the first three CCA axes was 93.5%. Elevation was revealed as the factor which most influenced community distribution and species diversity. Species diversity was negatively correlated with elevation, slope aspect, and litter thickness, but positively with slope. Species richness and heterogeneity increased first and then decreased but evenness decreased significantly with increasing elevation.     Particle swarm optimization using dimension selection methods

    a b s t r a c t Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has undergone many changes since its introduction in 1995. Being a stochastic algorithm, PSO and its randomness present formidable challenge for the theoretical analysis of it, and few of the existing PSO improvements have make an effort to eliminate the random coefficients in the PSO updating formula. This paper analyzes the importance of the randomness in the PSO, and then gives a PSO variant without randomness to show that traditional PSO cannot work without randomness. Based on our analysis of the randomness, another way of using randomness is proposed in PSO with random dimension selection (PSORDS) algorithm, which utilizes random dimension selection instead of stochastic coefficients. Finally, deterministic methods to do the dimension selection are proposed, and the resultant PSO with distance based dimension selection (PSODDS) algorithm is greatly superior to the traditional PSO and PSO with heuristic dimension selection (PSOHDS) algorithm is comparable to traditional PSO algorithm. In addition, using our dimension selection method to a newly proposed modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) algorithm also gets improved results. The experiment results demonstrate that our analysis about the randomness is correct and the usage of deterministic dimension selection method is very helpful

    Antibacterial activity of isopropoxy benzene guanidine against Riemerella anatipestifer

    Introduction:Riemerella anatipestifer (R. anatipestifer) is an important pathogen in waterfowl, leading to substantial economic losses. In recent years, there has been a notable escalation in the drug resistance rate of R. anatipestifer. Consequently, there is an imperative need to expedite the development of novel antibacterial medications to effectively manage the infection caused by R. anatipestifer.Methods: This study investigated the in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activities of a novel substituted benzene guanidine analog, namely, isopropoxy benzene guanidine (IBG), against R. anatipestifer by using the microdilution method, time-killing curve, and a pericarditis model. The possible mechanisms of these activities were explored.Results and Discussion: The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) range of IBG for R. anatipestifer was 0.5–2 μg/mL. Time-killing curves showed a concentration-dependent antibacterial effect. IBG alone or in combination with gentamicin significantly reduced the bacterial load of R. anatipestifer in the pericarditis model. Serial-passage mutagenicity assays showed a low probability for developing IBG resistance. Mechanistic studies suggested that IBG induced membrane damage by binding to phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin, leading to an imbalance in membrane potential and the transmembrane proton gradient, as well as the decreased of intracellular adenosine triphosphate. In summary, IBG is a potential antibacterial for controlling R. anatipestifer infections

    Genetic Variation of SARS Coronavirus in Beijing Hospital

    To characterize genetic variation of severe acute respiratory syndrome–associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) transmitted in the Beijing area during the epidemic outbreak of 2003, we sequenced 29 full-length S genes of SARS-CoV from 20 hospitalized SARS patients on our unit, the Beijing 302 Hospital. Viral RNA templates for the S-gene amplification were directly extracted from raw clinical samples, including plasma, throat swab, sputum, and stool, during the course of the epidemic in the Beijing area. We used a TA-cloning assay with direct analysis of nested reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction products in sequence. One hundred thirteen sequence variations with nine recurrent variant sites were identified in analyzed S-gene sequences compared with the BJ01 strain of SARS-CoV. Among them, eight variant sites were, we think, the first documented. Our findings demonstrate the coexistence of S-gene sequences with and without substitutions (referred to BJ01) in samples analyzed from some patients

    Total Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Score and Cerebral Bleeding Risk in Patients With Acute Stroke Treated With Intravenous Thrombolysis

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association of total cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) score with the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in patients with acute ischemic stroke who received intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) using recombinant tissue-plasminogen activator (rt-PA). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical data from two stroke registries of patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with IVT. We assessed the baseline magnetic resonance (MR) visible cSVD markers and total cSVD score (ranging from 0 to 4) between patients with and without ICH after IVT. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association of total cSVD score with the risk of ICH after IVT, adjusted for cofounders selected by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). We additionally performed an E-value analysis to fully explain away a specific exposure-outcome association. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to quantify the predictive potential of the total cSVD score for any ICH after IVT. RESULTS: Among 271 eligible patients, 55 (20.3%) patients experienced any ICH, 16 (5.9%) patients experienced a symptomatic ICH (sICH), and 5 (1.85%) patients had remote intracranial parenchymal hemorrhage (rPH). Logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of any ICH increased with increasing cSVD score [per unit increase, adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.03, 95% CI 1.22–3.41, P = 0.007]. Sensitivity analyses using E-value revealed that it would need moderately robust unobserved confounding to render the exposure-outcome (cSVD-any ICH) association null. ROC analysis showed that compared with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score alone, a combination of cSVD and NIHSS score had a larger area under the curve for any ICH (0.811, 95% CI 0.756–0.866 vs. 0.784, 95% CI 0.723–0.846, P = 0.0004). CONCLUSION: The total cSVD score is associated with an increased risk of any ICH after IVT and improves prediction for any ICH compared with NIHSS alone

    Alkali metal ions transfer across the water/1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by a series of crown ethers

    National Basic Research Program of China [2011CB933700, 2012CB932900]; National Science Foundation of China [NSFC21061120456, 21021002, 20973142]; National Project 985 of High Education; Chinese GovernmentThe facilitated transfer of alkali metal ions (Li+ and Na+) across the water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/1,2-DCE) interface was studied by using a series of crown ethers as ionophores: 4'-ethynylbenzo-15-crown-5-ether (L1), 3',6'-diethynylbenzo-15-crown-5-ether (L2) and 4',5'-diethynylbenzo-15-crown-5-ether (L3). Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the electrochemical behaviour of the facilitated ion transfer across the W/1,2-DCE interface supported at the tip of a micropipette. The diffusion coefficients of the ionophores in the 1,2-DCE phase were determined, while the metal-ligand complexes formed by these ions with all the ionophores were obtained to be in a 1 : 1 stoichiometric ratio. The association constants, log beta degrees, for complexes LiL1(+), LiL2(+), LiL3(+), NaL1(+), NaL2(+) and NaL3(+) were calculated to be 3.3, 4.2, 4.0, 2.1, 3.5 and 2.2, respectively. The theoretical calculations have shown that the conjugated constituent groups on the benzene ring have an essential effect on the spatial structures of the crown ether rings, which determine the supramolecular interaction between the ions and ionophores

    Y-Chromosome Evidence for Common Ancestry of Three Chinese Populations with a High Risk of Esophageal Cancer

    High rates of esophageal cancer (EC) are found in people of the Henan Taihang Mountain, Fujian Minnan, and Chaoshan regions of China. Historical records describe great waves of populations migrating from north-central China (the Henan and Shanxi Hans) through coastal Fujian Province to the Chaoshan plain. Although these regions are geographically distant, we hypothesized that EC high-risk populations in these three areas could share a common ancestry. Accordingly, we used 16 East Asian-specific Y-chromosome biallelic markers (single nucleotide polymorphisms; Y-SNPs) and six Y-chromosome short tandem repeat (Y-STR) loci to infer the origin of the EC high-risk Chaoshan population (CSP) and the genetic relationship between the CSP and the EC high-risk Henan Taihang Mountain population (HTMP) and Fujian population (FJP). The predominant haplogroups in these three populations are O3*, O3e*, and O3e1, with no significant difference between the populations in the frequency of these genotypes. Frequency distribution and principal component analysis revealed that the CSP is closely related to the HTMP and FJP, even though the former is geographically nearer to other populations (Guangfu and Hakka clans). The FJP is between the CSP and HTMP in the principal component plot. The CSP, FJP and HTMP are more closely related to Chinese Hans than to minorities, except Manchu Chinese, and are descendants of Sino-Tibetans, not Baiyues. Correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis, and phylogenetic analysis (neighbor-joining tree) all support close genetic relatedness among the CSP, FJP and HTMP. The network for haplogroup O3 (including O3*, O3e* and O3e1) showed that the HTMP have highest STR haplotype diversity, suggesting that the HTMP may be a progenitor population for the CSP and FJP. These findings support the potentially important role of shared ancestry in understanding more about the genetic susceptibility in EC etiology in high-risk populations and have implications for determining the molecular basis of this disease
