The Portland Basin; a (big) river runs through it

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Metropolitan Portland, Oregon, USA, lies within a small Neogene to Holocene basin in the forearc of the Cascadia subduction system. Although the basin owes its existence and structural development to its convergent-margin tectonic setting, the stratigraphic architecture of basin-fill deposits chiefly reflects its physiographic position along the lower reaches of the continental-scale Columbia River system. As a result of this globally unique setting, the basin preserves a complex record of aggradation and incision in response to distant as well as local tectonic, volcanic, and climatic events. Voluminous flood basalts, continental and locally derived sediment and volcanic debris, and catastrophic flood deposits all accumulated in an area influenced by contemporaneous tectonic deformation and variations in regional and local base level

Some studies on mast cell heterogeneity in man and other species.

The development of methods for the enzymic dispersion and isolation of free mast cells from a number of target tissues has yielded valuable information conceming the phenomenon of mast cell heterogeneity. Now, a rapidly increasing body of evidence firmly indicates that mast cells from different species and from different tissues within a given animal may exhibit marked variations in their pharmacological, histochemical and morphological properties. In the present study, the functional characteristics of mast cells isolated from a range of animals including man are compared. Next, heterogeneity within a single species is investigated both in rat and human mast cells, and finally, a study on human colonic mucosal mast cells from patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is reported. Rat serosal mast cells were most responsive to the histamine releasing action of polybasic compounds and neuropeptides. Hamster and mouse peritoneal mast cells showed lower reactivity, while tissue mast cells from the pig, guinea pig and man were essentially refractory to these agents. This pattern of differential responsiveness was also observed for the anti-allergic chromones disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) and nedocromil sodium. Rat mast cells from different anatomical locations responded in a heterogeneous fashion to the actions of histamine liberators and anti-allergic compounds. In general, cells from the peritoneum released the greatest percentage of their total cellular histamine in response to secretagogues of both immunological and non-immunological nature and were also the most sensitive towards agents that inhibited histamine release. In contrast, tissue mast cells were less responsive than their peritoneal counterparts. The order of reactivity was typically: mesentery >lung >intestine. This apparent heterogeneity, however, was less clearly defined in human mast cells. Indeed, apart from some subtle histochemical and functional differences, mast cells from the lung parenchyma, colonic mucosa, colonic submucosa/muscle, stomach mucosa and uterine myometrium were, in many respects, similar to each other. Finally, an increase in mast cell numbers was observed in the colonic mucosa of patients suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. However, this apparent increase was not associated with an enhancement of their reactivity

O IMPÉRIO DO SOL: UM ROMANCE HISTÓRICO PÓS-MODERNO

    Get PDF
Perspectiva. Realidade

The modelling of nematic liquid crystal phase devices

    Get PDF
The implementation of nematic liquid crystal optical devices, which exploit the voltage dependent, optical path length modification of the electrical Freedrichsz transition, is presented. By combining refractive elements in a diffractive zone structure, efficient and flexible devices with relatively high refractive powers can be constructed. Continuously variable optical properties can be achieved by scaling the optical profile of the refractive elements and applying a phase correction to ensure that the transition between adjacent zones is an integral number of wavelength, hence a continuous optical profile is constructed. Two such devices are postulated; a variable deflection angle prism and a variable focal length lens, though the approach may be extended to other devices. The zones are addressed through combed electrode structures. The required voltage profile is produced by dropping the applied voltages across a shaped conductive strip. A sampling of the profile is transported along the length of the zone via discrete electrodes. In order to produce the required scalability and independent phase correction of the optical profile, it is necessary to restrict the design and operation of the electrodes to the approximately linear region of the response curve. Two-dimensional optical structures can either be achieved through the use of planar earth plates, to mask connections to the centre of the device, or by cascading devices with electrode structures open to connection at the edges. In order to predict the optical profiles of these and other devices, a model was constructed which describes the director orientation through a two-dimensioned electrode structure. The variational finite element method was employed to minimize the electrical Gibbs free energy of a liquid crystal cell, in order to find the equilibrium director orientation. A preliminary version of this model is presented which is restricted to rotation of the liquid crystal to within the plane of the solution
