We endeavour to develop a tool to evaluate the influence upon our students’ long-term knowledge retention made by the various innovative methodologies being introduced into our teaching. A questionnaire is designed which is answered by 219 students from the third, fourth and fifth year of the dentistry degree and the results are assessed with the help of a statistical analysis program. This type of survey enables us to supervise our teaching and its influence upon the skill of our students. Furthermore, it can also prove to be useful as a tool for the evaluation of both the students’ perception of our teaching system and of its utility in the long-ter

    Last minute in NBA games

Apparently the behavior during a basketball game, as in other team sports, shows tremendous variability manifested in both individual and collective ways. However, when a significant number of games are studied, we can observe the unpredictability that characterizes the game. The degree of complexity of the game is not stable. Patterns change during all the game time, but the last minute is completely different reality. Our aim was to test and evaluate the existence of these patterns and their apparent complexity, by analyzing the NBA games scoring and substitution dynamics. Therefore, we examined the difference between the last minute and the rest of the game from the collected scores (1, 2 and 3 points), substitutions and timeouts. The underlying chaotic behavior of nonlinear interactions is inherent in Complex Systems. The data showed the existence of symmetries and repeated patterns of play during basketball games of the NBA but the last minute, which can be considered a completely different game.

This paper analyzes four scenarios of PV system configuration and proposes an optimized hybrid PV system size in order to improve Load Matching and Grid Interaction (LMGI) indicators, describing the yearly and daily variations of the indexes. A net plus-energy house is modeled in EnergyPlus under humid subtropical and dry tropical climates and electricity flows in the house and with the power grid are based on a high level battery controller simulated with different PV-battery sizes. An economic analysis is presented through two supporting schemes in order to perform analyses of Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), grid parity and system payback time. The results demonstrated the combination of load-shifting demand-side management and small-scale PV-battery capacities provide improvements on building self-consumption and on the effects on the grid. The economic study indicates the building reaches better profitability under current Brazilian net-metering scheme in scenarios without batteries, reducing the payback time and LCOE sensibility analysis indicate the importance in reducing PV costs and to promote financial incentives

A detailed chemistry model for transient hydrogen and carbon monoxide catalytic recombination on parallel flat Pt surfaces implemented in an integral code

A detailed chemistry model has been adapted and developed for surface chemistry, heat and mass transfer between H2/CO/air/steam/CO2 mixtures and vertical parallel Pt-coated surfaces. This model is based onto a simplified Deutschmann reaction scheme for methane surface combustion and the analysis by Elenbaas for buoyancy-induced heat transfer between parallel plates. Mass transfer is treated by the heat and mass transfer analogy. The proposed model is able to simulate the H2/CO recombination phenomena characteristic of parallel-plate Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners (PARs), which have been proposed and implemented as a promising hydrogen-control strategy in the safety of nuclear power stations or other industries. The transient model is able to approach the warm-up phase of the PAR and its shut-down as well as the dynamic changes within the surrounding atmosphere. The model has been implemented within the MELCOR code and assessed against results of the Battelle Model Containment tests of the Zx series. Results show accurate predictions and a better performance than traditional methods in integral codes, i.e., empirical correlations, which are also much case-specific. Influence of CO present in the mixture on the PAR performance is also addressed in this paper

Optimized One vs One approach in multiclass classification for early Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment diagnosis

The detection of Alzheimer’s Disease in its early stages is crucial for patient care and drugs development. Motivated by this fact, the neuroimaging community has extensively applied machine learning techniques to the early diagnosis problem with promising results. The organization of challenges has helped the community to address different raised problems and to standardize the approaches to the problem. In this work we use the data from international challenge for automated prediction of MCI from MRI data to address the multiclass classification problem. We propose a novel multiclass classification approach that addresses the outlier detection problem, uses pairwise t-test feature selection, project the selected features onto a Partial-Least-Squares multiclass subspace, and applies one-versus-one error correction output codes classification. The proposed method yields to an accuracy of 67 % in the multiclass classification, outperforming all the proposals of the competition.Ministerio de Innovacion y Ciencia Project DEEP-NEUROMAPS RTI2018-098913-B100Consejeria de Economia, Innovacion, Ciencia, y Empleo of the Junta de Andalucia A-TIC-080-UGR18 TIC FRONTERAGerman Research Foundation (DFG) FPU 18/04902United States Department of Health & Human Services National Institutes of Health (NIH) - USA NIH National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke (NINDS) U01 AG024904DOD ADNI Department of Defense W81XWH-12-2-001

Viviendas de alquiler (Airbnb) y alojamientos turísticos tradicionales: nuevo escenario competitivo en el mercado turístico de Extremadura

The proliferation of vacation rentals in private homes has grown out of proportion in many places—their increment being facilitated by digital platforms such as Airbnb. This growing trend means a substantial rise in the number of available rooms. This may imply that this is a case of unfair competition, given that they are not subject to the same regulations of legal accommodation providers. Because of this, in turn, the myth of the sharing economy is largely debunked and it simply becomes another business model. Extremadura has been no stranger to this trend, a fact that has led to our working hypothesis: the proliferation of vacation rentals in private homes deepens the problems of competition among registered businesses—more so among specific types of accommodation providers. In order to test this hypothesis, the rentals available at the digital platform were retrieved. They were then georeferenced alongside the available rooms at registered businesses. Next, the data was analyzed in a correlation matrix that yielded a strong correlation between illegal rentals and the number of rooms offered by hotels and tourist apartments. However, when a geographical analysis was carried out, two issues become apparent: that the situation also affects other types of accommodation businesses and that it is especially prevalent in popular tourist areas and their surroundings.

Inoculation with rumen fluid in early life as a strategy to optimize the weaning process in intensive dairy goat systems

Ruminants are born with an undeveloped physical, metabolic, and microbial rumen. Rumen development is limited under artificial rearing systems when newborn animals are separated from the dam, fed on milk replacer, and weaned at an early age. This study aims to evaluate the effects of early-life inoculation of young ruminants with rumen fluid from adult animals. Eighty newborn goat kids were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 experimental treatments and inoculated daily from d 1 to wk 11 with autoclaved rumen fluid (AUT), fresh rumen fluid obtained from adult goats fed either a forage diet (RFF) or concentrate-rich diet (RFC), or absence of inoculation (CTL). Goat kids were artificially reared with ad libitum access to milk replacer, starter concentrate, and forage hay. Blood was sampled weekly and rumen microbial fermentation was monitored at 5 (preweaning), 7 (weaning), and 9 wk of age (postweaning). Results indicated that inoculation with fresh rumen fluid accelerated the rumen microbial and fermentative development before weaning. As a result, RFC and RFF animals had higher solid feed intake (+73%), rumen concentrations of ammonia-N (+26%), total volatile fatty acids (+46%), butyrate (+50%), and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate (+48%), and lower milk intake (−6%) than CTL and AUT animals at wk 5. Inoculation with fresh inoculum also promoted early rumen colonization by a complex and abundant protozoal community, whereas CTL animals remained protozoa free. Although all kids experienced moderate growth retardation during 1 wk after weaning, inoculation with fresh rumen fluid favored the weaning process, leading to 2.2 times higher weight gain than CTL and AUT animals during wk 8. Some of these advantages were retained during the postweaning period and RFF and RFC animals showed higher forage intake (up to +44%) than CTL and AUT animals with no detrimental effects on feed digestibility or stress levels. The superior microbial load of RFC compared with RFF inoculum tended to provide further improvements in terms of forage intake, plasma β-hydroxybutyrate, and rumen protozoa, whereas AUT inoculation provided minor (if any) advantages with respect to CTL animals. Although no differences were noted on animal growth, this study suggests that early life inoculation of goat kids with rumen microbiota can represent an effective strategy to accelerate the rumen development, facilitating a smooth transition from milk to solid feed and to the potential implementation of early weaning strategies. This study was funded by the Spanish government through the project AGL2017-86938-R and the Training Program for Academics grant, Madrid, Spain (FPU16/01981)
