    Gender differences in variables associated with sleep quality in chronic tension type headache

    We aimed to evaluate gender differences in the relationships between headache features, sleep quality, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and burden of headache in 193 patients (73 percent women) with chronic tension type headache (CTTH). Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Headache features were collected with a four-week diary. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess anxiety/depressive symptoms. Headache Disability Inventory was used to evaluate the burden of headache. In men with CTTH, sleep quality was positive correlated with headache frequency (r = 0.310; p = .018), emotional (r = 0.518; p < .001) and physical (r = 0.468; p < .001) burden of headache, and depressive symptoms (r = 0.564; p < .001). In women, positive correlations were observed between sleep quality and headache intensity (r = 0.282; p < .001), headache frequency (r = 0.195; p = .021), emotional burden (r = 0.249; p = .004), and depressive symptoms (r = 0.382; p < .001). The results of stepwise regression analyses revealed that depressive symptoms and emotional burden of headache explained 37.2 percent of the variance in sleep quality in men (p < .001), whereas depressive symptoms and headache intensity explained 17.4 percent of the variance in sleep quality in women (p < .001) with CTTH. Gender differences associated with poor sleep should be considered for proper management of individuals with CTTH

This study aims to (1) determine the prevalence of ECP use among girls who have had sexual intercourse and (2) comparatively analyze their family and psychological profiles according to whether they have used ECPs. Methods:The sample of 1735 Spanish girls aged 15 to 18 came from a representative sample of the 2014 edition of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Of this sample, 398 girls had sexual intercourse and reported their ECP use. Data collection for the HBSC study was performed through an online questionnaire to which adolescents responded anonymously in school. Data analyses were descriptive and bivariate and were performed with the statistical program IBM SPSS Statistics 23.Results:The results demonstrated that 30.65% of girls who had sexual intercourse used ECPs. Noticeable differences in paternal knowledge and communication with the father were observed between girls who used the ECP at least once and those who did not use it. In contrast, differences between girls who used the ECP once and those who used it twice or more were pronounced with regard to parental knowledge, communication with parents, maternal affection,life satisfaction, sense of coherence and depression. Conclusions:This work demonstrates a high prevalence of ECP use and a more positive family and psychological profile for girls who used ECP once compared with those who used it twice or more.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    En el proceso de convergencia hacia el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior se hace necesario establecer nuevos modelos de enseñanza universitaria que tengan en cuenta la formación de profesionales en términos de competencia y permitan una práctica profesional excelente. Para ello es preciso desarrollar herramientas docentes que faciliten la adquisición de competencias específicas y transversales. En este sentido la Literatura puede utilizarse como recurso docente en Ciencias de la Salud. Existen múltiples obras literarias que abordan la enfermedad y la actividad de diversos profesionales sanitarios y esto permite contar con abundante material para utilizar en el aula. En este trabajo mostramos una experiencia de aplicación de la Literatura como herramienta docente en el grado de Fisioterapia y en el Master en Neurocontrol Motor (60 créditos ECTS) de la Universidad rey Juan Carlos para facilitar la adquisición de competencias específicas y competencias transversales, tales como la capacidad de reflexión, de resolución de problemas nuevos, el trabajo autónomo y colaborativo, entre otras.     Relationship between attention and balance: A dual-task condition study in children

    This study explored the relationship between motor functions and attention in children aged 4–5 years. A sample of 85 children was collected from a primary school (44 boys and 41 girls). We applied a standardized continuous attention performance test, the Kiddie Continuous Performance Test, under two conditions (sitting and balancing). Data were collected from two standardized balance tests, the Battelle and Pediatric Balance Scale. There was a significant relationship between attention and balance and gender differences that may condition the way to address balance issues in boys and girls. Gender should be considered when addressing balance problems to get efficient interventions.     Sleep Quality Mediates the Effect of Sensitization-Associated Symptoms, Anxiety, and Depression on Quality of Life in Individuals with Post-COVID-19 Pain

    A better understanding of biological and emotional variables associated with health-related quality of life in people with long-COVID is needed. Our aim was to identify potential direct and indirect effects on the relationships between sensitization-associated symptoms, mood disorders such as anxiety/depressive levels, and sleep quality on health-related quality of life in people suffering from post-COVID-19 pain. One hundred and forty-six individuals who were hospitalized due to COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic and suffering from long-term post-COVID-19 pain completed different patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), including clinical features, symptoms associated with sensitization of the central nervous system (Central Sensitization Inventory), mood disorders (Hospital Anxiety and Depressive Scale), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and health-related quality of life (paper-based five-level version of EuroQol-5D) in a face-to-face interview conducted at 18.8 (SD 1.8) months after hospitalization. Different mediation models were conducted to assess the direct and indirect effects of the associations among the different variables. The mediation models revealed that sensitization-associated symptoms and depressive levels directly affected health-related quality of life; however, these effects were not statistically significant when sleep quality was included. In fact, the effect of sensitization-associated symptomatology on quality of life (β = −0.10, 95% CI −0.1736, −0.0373), the effect of depressive levels on quality of life (β= −0.09, 95% CI −0.1789, −0.0314), and the effect of anxiety levels on quality of life (β = −0.09, 95% CI −0.1648, −0.0337) were all indirectly mediated by sleep quality. This study revealed that sleep quality mediates the relationship between sensitization-associated symptoms and mood disorders (depressive/anxiety levels) with health-related quality of life in individuals who were hospitalized with COVID-19 at the first wave of the pandemic and reporting post-COVID-19 pain. Longitudinal studies will help to determine the clinical implications of these findings

    Effects of Aerobic Exercise Therapy through Nordic Walking Program in Lactate Concentrations, Fatigue and Quality-of-Life in Patients with Long-COVID Syndrome: A Non-Randomized Parallel Controlled Trial

    Background: Long-COVID syndrome comprises a variety of signs and symptoms that develop during or after infection with COVID-19 which may affect the physical capabilities. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the effects of Long-COVID syndrome in sport capabilities after suffering from COVID-19 infection. The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare lactate concentration and quality of life (QoL) in patients with Long-COVID with those who have not developed non-Long-COVID during Nordic walking exercise therapy. Methods: Twenty-nine patients (25.5 ± 7.1 years) took part in a non-randomized controlled trial, divided into two groups: a Long-COVID group (n = 16) and a non-Long-COVID control (n = 13). Patients were confirmed as having Long-COVID syndrome if they experienced fatigue or tiredness when performing daily activities and worsening of symptoms after vigorous physical or mental activity. All participants underwent a 12-week Nordic Walking program. Lactate concentration after exercise and distance covered during all sessions were measured. Pre- and Long-Nordic Walking program, the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36), and EURO QoL-5D (EQ-ED) were administered to assess fatigue and quality of life, respectively. Results: There was a lactate concentration effect between groups (F = 5.604; p = 0.024). However, there was no significant effect as a result of the session (F = 3.521; p = 0.121) with no interaction of group × session (F = 1.345; p = 0.414). The group main effect (F = 23.088; p p = 0.026), and group × time (F = 4.632; p = 0.002) interaction on the SF-36 scale were noted. Also, there were a significant group main effect (F = 38.372; p p = 0.005), and group × time interaction (F = 4.340; p = 0.014) on EQ-5D. However, there was only a significant group main effect (F = 26.235; p p = 0.160) and group × time (F = 1.584; p = 0.234) interaction on the MFIS scale. Conclusions: The Long-COVID group showed higher lactate concentration compared with the control group during the 12 weeks of the Nordic Walking program. The Long-COVID group presented a decrease in fatigue with respect to the control group according to the MFIS scale, as well as improvement in quality of life after aerobic exercise therapy

    Could a Multitask Balance Training Program Complement the Balance Training in Healthy Preschool Children: A Quasi- Experimental Study

    This prospective quasi-experimental study investigated the efficacy of a multitask balance training program to improve the balancing ability of healthy preschool children. A total of 85 (51.8% boys) healthy preschool children aged 4–6 years were randomly divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received a multitask balance training program, while the control group received a placebo training program. Outcomes were collected at baseline and immediately following the intervention. Independent members of the research team recorded balance skill measurements in the cohort at pre- and post-training using the Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS). Balance-related outcomes were recorded using the Battelle Development Inventory in Spanish using the second edition (BDI-II). A significant effect of time interaction (F = 7.27, p = 0.015; F = 6.16, p = 0.02 and F = 7.41, p = 0.014) existed for the PBS and BDI-II over balance immediately after the intervention (p < 0.001 for each). A significant group-by-time interaction was detected for the PBS and BDI-II (p < 0.001 and p = 0.006, respectively).
