    Whom to Ask? Jury Selection for Decision Making Tasks on Micro-blog Services

    It is universal to see people obtain knowledge on micro-blog services by asking others decision making questions. In this paper, we study the Jury Selection Problem(JSP) by utilizing crowdsourcing for decision making tasks on micro-blog services. Specifically, the problem is to enroll a subset of crowd under a limited budget, whose aggregated wisdom via Majority Voting scheme has the lowest probability of drawing a wrong answer(Jury Error Rate-JER). Due to various individual error-rates of the crowd, the calculation of JER is non-trivial. Firstly, we explicitly state that JER is the probability when the number of wrong jurors is larger than half of the size of a jury. To avoid the exponentially increasing calculation of JER, we propose two efficient algorithms and an effective bounding technique. Furthermore, we study the Jury Selection Problem on two crowdsourcing models, one is for altruistic users(AltrM) and the other is for incentive-requiring users(PayM) who require extra payment when enrolled into a task. For the AltrM model, we prove the monotonicity of JER on individual error rate and propose an efficient exact algorithm for JSP. For the PayM model, we prove the NP-hardness of JSP on PayM and propose an efficient greedy-based heuristic algorithm. Finally, we conduct a series of experiments to investigate the traits of JSP, and validate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed algorithms on both synthetic and real micro-blog data.Comment: VLDB201

    Lipid detection in pig arteries using intravascular photoacoustic imaging

    Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. Each year over 370,000 people died from coronary artery disease in America. As the primary form of coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis behaves as lipid-rich plaque development inside an artery wall. Vulnerable plaques are those prone to rupture, which may result in thrombus or even death. Typical hallmarks of a vulnerable plaque include thin fibrous cap, a large lipid-rich necrotic core and inflammatory infiltrate. The identification and accurate detection of these lipid depositions in the arterial wall is crucial in the diagnosis of atherosclerosis. However, none of the current clinical imaging tools can provide accurate and reliable detection of the lipid-rich necrotic core in human arteries. Intravascular photoacoustic (IVPA) imaging is an emerging technique that can provide lipid-specific detection with depth resolution. Our research focuses on applying the catheter-based IVPA imaging technique for lipid-laden plaque detection within the artery of an Ossabaw swine model. A high sensitivity IVPA imaging system developed in our lab was performed to imaging the carotid arteries from the pig model ex vivo. The imaging results showed that the exact location and size of the lipid core can be identified, which agrees with the gold standard histology result. We also compared the results of our IVPA system with the commercial near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) imaging system. They both successfully indicated the lipid appearance at the same location. However, our imaging modality provided more information of the lipid including lipid core size, depth and distribution. This is a significant improvement of plaque burden estimation and the diagnosis of atherosclerosis in the human artery

    Acupuncture for insomnia symptoms in hypertensive patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    PurposeIn the realm of pain management, traditional Chinese medicine, specifically acupuncture, has garnered increasing attention. This meta-analysis pioneers the evaluation of acupuncture’s effectiveness in treating insomnia among hypertensive patients.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search across several databases—PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, WANFANG, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Sinomed, and the Chinese Journal of Science and Technology (VIP). Additionally, forward and backward articles of studies published from the inception of these databases until 10 September 2023, were reviewed. This systematic review and meta-analysis included all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focusing on acupuncture for insomnia in hypertensive patients, without imposing language or date restrictions. We rigorously assessed all outcome measures reported in these trials. The evidence was synthesized by calculating the difference between mean differences (MD) in symptom change. The quality of the evidence was determined using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. This study is registered with PROSPERO under number CRD42023461760.ResultsOur analysis included 16 RCTs, comprising 1,309 patients. The findings revealed that acupuncture was significantly more effective than the control group in reducing insomnia symptoms, as indicated by a greater decrease in the PSQI score (MD = −3.1, 95% CI [−3.77 to −2.62], p < 0.00001). Additionally, improvements in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were more pronounced in the acupuncture group compared to the control group (SBP: MD = −10.31, 95% CI [−16.98 to −3.64], p = 0.002; DBP: MD = −5.71, 95% CI [−8.19 to −3.23], p < 0.00001). These results suggest that acupuncture not only improves sleep quality but also lowers blood pressure in patients suffering from hypertension and insomnia. Further research is warranted to elucidate optimal acupuncture points and the duration of treatment for maximized therapeutic effect.Systematic review registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero, CRD42023461760

    Experimental study on LBL beams

    Six specimens were made and tested to study the mechanical properties of LBL beams. The mean ultimate loading value is 68.39 MPa with a standard deviation of 6.37 MPa, giving a characteristic strength (expected to be exceeded by 95% of specimens) of 57.91 MPa, and the mean ultimate deflection is 53.3 mm with a standard deviation of 5.5 mm, giving the characteristic elastic modulus of 44.3 mm. The mean ultimate bending moment is 20.18 kN.m with a standard deviation of 1.88 kN.m, giving the characteristic elastic modulus of 17.08 kN.m. The mean elastic modulus is 9688 MPa with a standard deviation of 1765 MPa, giving the characteristic elastic modulus of 6785 MPa, and the mean modulus of rupture is 93.3 MPa with a standard deviation of 8.6 MPa, giving the characteristic elastic modulus of 79.2 MPa. The strain across the cross-section for all LBL beams is basically linear throughout the loading process, following standard beam theory

    Analysis of the association between Fc receptor family gene polymorphisms and ocular Behcet's disease in Han Chinese

    Abstract Fc receptors are known to have a pivotal role in the initiation and regulation of many immunological and inflammatory processes. This study aimed to investigate the association of Fc receptor family gene polymorphisms with ocular Behçet’s disease (BD) in Han Chinese. A two stage case–control study was performed in 1022 BD cases and 1803 healthy controls. Twenty-three SNPs were genotyped using the MassARRAY system (Sequenom), TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assay and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. The expression of FCGR3A was examined by real-time PCR and cytokine production was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A significantly higher frequency of the FCGR3A/rs428888 CT genotype (Pc = 1.96 × 10−7, OR = 1.897) and a lower frequencies of CC genotype and C allele (Pc = 1.96 × 10−7, OR = 0.527; Pc = 7.22 × 10−7, OR = 0.554 respectively) were found in ocular BD as compared with controls. Functional experiments showed an increased FCGR3A expression (P = 0.005) and increased cytokine protein expressions of MCP-1, IL-1β and TNF-α by LPS stimulated PBMCs in CT carriers of FCGR3A rs428888 compared to CC carriers (P = 0.034; P = 0.025; P = 0.04; respectively). Our findings demonstrate that FCGR3A/rs428888 confers genetic susceptibility for ocular BD in Han Chinese

    Fast assessment of lipid content in arteries in vivo by intravascular photoacoustic tomography

    Abstract Intravascular photoacoustic tomography is an emerging technology for mapping lipid deposition within an arterial wall for the investigation of the vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaques to rupture. By converting localized laser absorption in lipid-rich biological tissue into ultrasonic waves through thermoelastic expansion, intravascular photoacoustic tomography is uniquely capable of imaging the entire arterial wall with chemical selectivity and depth resolution. However, technical challenges, including an imaging catheter with sufficient sensitivity and depth and a functional sheath material without significant signal attenuation and artifact generation for both photoacoustics and ultrasound, have prevented in vivo application of intravascular photoacoustic imaging for clinical translation. Here, we present a highly sensitive quasi-collinear dual-mode photoacoustic/ultrasound catheter with elaborately selected sheath material, and demonstrated the performance of our intravascular photoacoustic tomography system by in vivo imaging of lipid distribution in rabbit aortas under clinically relevant conditions at imaging speeds up to 16 frames per second. Ex vivo evaluation of fresh human coronary arteries further confirmed the performance of our imaging system for accurate lipid localization and quantification of the entire arterial wall, indicating its clinical significance and translational capability

    Research on power electronic transformer applied in AC/DC hybrid distribution networks

    The AC/DC hybrid distribution network is one of the trends in distribution network development, which poses great challenges to the traditional distribution transformer. In this paper, a new topology suitable for AC/DC hybrid distribution network is put forward according to the demands of power grid, with advantages of accepting DG and DC loads, while clearing DC fault by blocking the clamping double sub-module (CDSM) of input stage. Then, this paper shows the typical structure of AC/DC distribution network that is hand in hand. Based on the new topology, this paper designs the control and modulation strategies of each stage, where the outer loop controller of input stage is emphasized for its two-control mode. At last, the rationality of new topology and the validity of control strategies are verified by the steady and dynamic state simulation. At the same time, the simulation results highlight the role of PET in energy regulation.     Heterologous Expression and Biochemical Characterization of Two Lipoxygenases in Oriental Melon, <i>Cucumis melo</i> var. <i>makuwa</i> Makino

    <div><p>Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are a class of non-heme iron-containing dioxygenases that catalyse oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids to produce hydroperoxidation that are in turn converted to oxylipins. Although multiple isoforms of LOXs have been detected in several plants, LOXs in oriental melon have not attracted much attention. Two full-length LOX cDNA clones, <i>CmLOX10</i> and <i>CmLOX13</i> which have been isolated from oriental melon (<i>Cucumis melo</i> var. <i>makuwa</i> Makino) cultivar “Yumeiren”, encode 902 and 906 amino acids, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis showed that CmLOX10 and CmLOX13 included all of the typical LOX domains and shared 58.11% identity at the amino acid level with each other. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that CmLOX10 and CmLOX13 were members of the type 2 13-LOX subgroup which are known to be involved in biotic and abiotic stress. Heterologous expression of the full-length CmLOX10 and truncated CmLOX13 in <i>Escherichia coli</i> revealed that the encoded exogenous proteins were identical to the predicted molecular weights and possessed the lipoxygenase activities. The purified CmLOX10 and CmLOX13 recombinant enzymes exhibited maximum activity at different temperature and pH and both had higher affinity for linoleic acid than linolenic acid. Chromatogram analysis of reaction products from the CmLOX10 and CmLOX13 enzyme reaction revealed that both enzymes produced 13S-hydroperoxides when linoleic acid was used as substrate. Furthermore, the subcellular localization analysis by transient expression of the two LOX fusion proteins in tobacco leaves showed that CmLOX10 and CmLOX13 proteins were located in plasma membrane and chloroplasts respectively. We propose that the two lipoxygenases may play different functions in oriental melon during plant growth and development.</p></div
