    Evidence of the side jump mechanism in the anomalous Hall effect in paramagnets

    Persistent confusion has existed between the intrinsic (Berry curvature) and the side jump mechanisms of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnets. We provide unambiguous identification of the side jump mechanism, in addition to the skew scattering contribution in epitaxial paramagnetic Ni34_{34}Cu66_{66} thin films, in which the intrinsic contribution is by definition excluded. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the AHE further reveals that the side jump mechanism is dominated by the elastic scattering

    Experiences in modelling feature interactions with Coloured Petri Nets

    A modern mobile phone supports many features: voice and data calls, text messaging, personal information management like phonebooks and calendars, WAP browsing, games, alarm clock, etc. All these features are packaged into a handset with a small display and a special purpose keypad. The limited user interface and the seamless intertwining of logically separate features cause many interactions between the software components in the UI of mobile phones. In this paper, we present an overview of our approach to modelling feature interactions in Nokia's mobile phones with explicit behavioral models of features. We use Coloured Petri Nets as the modeling language and the tool Design/CPN that provides a graphical, interactive user interface for constructing and simulating Coloured Petri Nets. We describe at a general level how we have created a graphical user interface for controlling and observing the simulations of models through an on-screen mock-up of a mobile phone. Then, we discuss the concrete results we have achieved by using our approach

    MAGEA1 inhibits the expression of BORIS via increased promoter methylation

    Melanoma-associated antigen A1 (MAGEA1) and BORIS (also known as CTCFL) are members of the cancer testis antigen (CTA) family. Their functions and expression-regulation mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we reveal new functions and regulatory mechanisms of MAGEA1 and BORIS in breast cancer cells, which we investigated in parental and genetically manipulated breast cancer cells via gene overexpression or siRNA-mediated downregulation. We identified the interaction between MAGEA1 and CTCF, which is required for the binding of MAGEA1 to the BORIS promoter and is critical for the recruitment of DNMT3a. A protein complex containing MAGEA1, CTCF and DNMT3a was formed before or after conjunction with the BORIS promoter. The binding of this complex to the BORIS promoter accounts for the hypermethylation and repression of BORIS expression, which results in cell death in the breast cancer cell lines tested. Multiple approaches were employed, including co-immunoprecipitation, glutathione S-transferase pull-down assay, co-localization and cell death analyses using annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide double-staining and caspase 3 activation assays, chromatin immunoprecipitation and bisulfite sequencing PCR assays for methylation. Our results have implications for the development of strategies in CTA-based immune therapeutics

    Effect of Processing Parameters and Temperature on Sliding Wear of H62 Copper Alloy Modified by Friction Stir Surface Processing

    H62 copper alloy surface was modified by friction stir surface processing (FSSP) with different processing parameters including rotation rate, penetration depth and processing speed of the stirring tool under the room temperature (25 °C). Then friction and wear experiments of the surface were carried on at different temperatures. The experimental results show that (i) the specimens hardness initially increases with increasing the wear test temperature, then decreases with further increasing the temperature for fixed rotation rate and penetration depth, (ii) the wear resistances of the specimens decrease as the rotation rate of the stirring tool increases for fixed penetration depth and wear test temperature, (iii) the wear resistances of the specimens decrease as the penetration depth increases for constant rotation rate and wear test temperature. It is found that the optimal processing parameters are rotational speed 1200 rpm, temperature 100 ℃ and penetration depth 0.2 mm, respectively, which can greatly improve the wear performance of the H62 surface. Therefore, FSSP is a promising technique for modifying H62 copper alloy, which can be widely applied in ship manufacturing

    Concurrent administration of amiodarone and atenolol in the treatment of coronary artery disease complicated with arrhythmia, and its effect on serum levels of CD40L, TNF-α and IL-6

    Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of the combination of amiodarone and atenolol in the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) complicated with arrhythmia, and its effect on serum levels of CD-40L, TNF-α and IL-6.Methods: One hundred and twenty CAD patients with arrhythmia on admission in The First People'sHospital of Shuangliu District Chengdu, China were assigned to groups A and B, each having 60 patients. Amiodarone was administered to all the patients, while atenolol was additionally given to patients in group A. Levels of heart function indicators, inflammatory factors, blood pressure, heart rate, adverse reaction rate (ARR) and overall efficacy were evaluated for the two groups.Results: There were significantly improved levels of heart function indicators, and lower levels of CD40L, TNF-α and IL-6 in group A, when compared with group B (p < 0.001). Moreover, treatment effectiveness was higher in group A than in group B (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in ARR between groups A and B.Conclusion: The combined use of amiodarone and atenolol improves heart function indicators in patients with CAD and arrhythmia, reduces the levels of inflammatory factors, normalizes blood pressure and heart rate, and lowers ARR. However, further clinical trials on this combined therapy are required prior to its use in clinical practice

    Kooperativna evolucija za kvalitetno pružanje usluga u paradigmi Interneta stvari

    To facilitate the automation process in the Internet of Things, the research issue of distinguishing prospective services out of many “similar” services, and identifying needed services w.r.t the criteria of Quality of Service (QoS), becomes very important. To address this aim, we propose heuristic optimization, as a robust and efficient approach for solving complex real world problems. Accordingly, this paper devises a cooperative evolution approach for service composition under the restrictions of QoS. A series of effective strategies are presented for this problem, which include an enhanced local best first strategy and a global best strategy that introduces perturbations. Simulation traces collected from real measurements are used for evaluating the proposed algorithms under different service composition scales that indicate that the proposed cooperative evolution approach conducts highly efficient search with stability and rapid convergence. The proposed algorithm also makes a well-designed trade-off between the population diversity and the selection pressure when the service compositions occur on a large scale.Kako bi se automatizirali procesi u internetu stvati, nužno je rezlikovati bitne usluge u moru sličnih kao i identificirati potrebne usluge u pogledu kvalitete usluge (QoS). Kako bi doskočili ovome problemu prdlaže se heuristička optimizacija kao robustan i efikasan način rješavajne kompleksnih problema. Nadalje, u članku je predložen postupak kooperativne evolucije za slaganje usluga uz ograničenja u pogledu kvalutete usluge. Predstavljen je niz efektivnih strategija za spomenuti problem uključujući strategije najboljeg prvog i najboljeg globalnog koje unose perturbacije u polazni problem. Simulacijski rezultati kao i stvarni podatci su korišteni u svrhu evaluacije prodloženog algoritma kako bi se osigurala efikasna pretraga uz stabilnost i brzu konvergenciju.     Liquefaction identification based on instantaneous H/V spectrum ratio

    The strong vibration record contains a lot of information on the site during the earthquake, and the dynamic characteristics of the soil layer in the site can be expressed through this information. Currently, the H/V spectral ratio recorded by acceleration is often used to study the seismic effect of the site. Inspired by this, the thesis puts forward the idea of using the instantaneous H/V spectral ratio and its corresponding instantaneous frequency to judge the site liquefaction. The time-varying VARMA model is used to represent the horizontal ground motion component as the output of a time-varying system with vertical ground motion component as input. According to the time-varying VARMA parameters, the instantaneous spectral ratio, instantaneous frequency of the system and instantaneous damping ratio are used to judge the site liquefaction

    Regulation of gene expression by FSP27 in white and brown adipose tissue

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Brown and white adipose tissues (BAT and WAT) play critical roles in controlling energy homeostasis and in the development of obesity and diabetes. The mouse Fat-Specific protein 27 (FSP27), a member of the cell death-inducing DFF45-like effector (CIDE) family, is expressed in both BAT and WAT and is associated with lipid droplets. Over-expression of FSP27 promotes lipid storage, whereas <it>FSP27 </it>deficient mice have improved insulin sensitivity and are resistant to diet-induced obesity. In addition, <it>FSP27</it>-deficient white adipocytes have reduced lipid storage, smaller lipid droplets, increased mitochondrial activity and a higher expression of several BAT-selective genes. To elucidate the molecular mechanism by which FSP27 controls lipid storage and gene expression in WAT and BAT, we systematically analyzed the gene expression profile of <it>FSP27-</it>deficient WAT by microarray analysis and compared the expression levels of a specific set of genes in WAT and BAT by semi-quantitative real-time PCR analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>BAT-selective genes were significantly up-regulated, whereas WAT-selective genes were down-regulated in the WAT of <it>FSP27-</it>deficient mice. The expression of the BAT-selective genes was also dramatically up-regulated in the WAT of <it>leptin/FSP27 </it>double deficient mice. In addition, the expression levels of genes involved in multiple metabolic pathways, including oxidative phosphorylation, the TCA cycle, fatty acid synthesis and fatty acid oxidation, were increased in the <it>FSP27-</it>deficient WAT. In contrast, the expression levels for genes involved in extracellular matrix remodeling, the classic complement pathway and TGF-β signaling were down-regulated in the <it>FSP27-</it>deficient WAT. Most importantly, the expression levels of regulatory factors that determine BAT identity, such as CEBPα/β, PRDM16 and major components of the cAMP pathway, were markedly up-regulated in the WAT of <it>FSP27-</it>deficient mice. The expression levels of these regulatory factors were also up-regulated in <it>leptin/FSP27 </it>double deficient mice. Interestingly, distinct gene expression profiles were observed in the BAT of <it>FSP27-</it>deficient mice. Taken together, these data suggest that the WAT of <it>FSP27-</it>deficient mice have a gene expression profile similar to that of BAT.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>FSP27 acts as a molecular determinant that controls gene expression for a diversity of metabolic and signaling pathways and, in particular, the expression of regulatory factors, including CEBPα/β, PRDM16 and components of the cAMP signaling pathway, that control the identity of WAT and BAT.</p
