Rotary bistable and Parametrically Excited Vibration Energy Harvesting
Parametric resonance is a type of nonlinear vibration phenomenon [1], [2] induced from the periodic modulation of at least one of the system parameters and has the potential to exhibit interesting higher order nonlinear behaviour [3]. Parametrically excited vibration energy harvesters have been previously shown to enhance both the power amplitude [4] and the frequency bandwidth [5] when compared to the conventional direct resonant approach. However, to practically activate the more profitable regions of parametric resonance, additional design mechanisms [6], [7] are required to overcome a critical initiation threshold amplitude. One route is to establish an autoparametric system where external direct excitation is internally coupled to parametric excitation [8]. For a coupled two degrees of freedom (DoF) oscillatory system, principal autoparametric resonance can be achieved when the natural frequency of the first DoF f1 is twice that of the second DoF f2 and the external excitation is in the vicinity of f1. This paper looks at combining rotary and translatory motion and use autoparametric resonance phenomena
Soil moisture and vegetation sensing using GNSS-R polarimetric measurement
GNSS-Reflectometry is an efficient tool for remote sensing and plays a key role in several of applications. The estimation of soil moisture and vegetation in the land field is attracting widespread interest in hydrology, climatology and carbon cycles. In order to investigate the scattering polarization properties from different types of surface environments, an airborne measurement was performed using a new 4-channel prototype for collecting the direct, reflected left-hand circular polarized (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarized (RHCP) signals. Both LHCP and RHCP reflected signals were acquired by a dual polarization antenna at the same time. A data averaging procedure was used to reduce the incoherent power of received power and the reflected data from two channels were normalized by direct signals obtained from each front-end (FE). Then three polarimetric observables were used to analyze the vegetation biomass and soil moisture fluctuations. It was concluded that polarimetric ratio is sensitive to soil moisture content (SMC), and considerably independent to roughness and vegetation biomass. The trunk component was confirmed to be the most important factor affecting the amplitude of scattering polarizations. Furthermore, the measurement results show that the PR variation between different elevation angles was affected by roughness and biomass. The results show another possibility of further geophysical parameter evaluation by using polarimetric applications in GNSS-R
Assessing effects of permafrost thaw on C fluxes based on multiyear modeling across a permafrost thaw gradient at Stordalen, Sweden
Northern peatlands in permafrost regions contain a large amount of organic carbon (C) in the soil. Climate warming and associated permafrost degradation are expected to have significant impacts on the C balance of these ecosystems, but the magnitude is uncertain. We incorporated a permafrost model, Northern Ecosystem Soil Temperature (NEST), into a biogeochemical model, DeNitrificationDeComposition (DNDC), to model C dynamics in highlatitude peatland ecosystems. The enhanced model was applied to assess effects of permafrost thaw on C fluxes of a subarctic peatland at Stordalen, Sweden. DNDC simulated soil freeze–thaw dynamics, net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE), and CH4 fluxes across three typical land cover types, which represent a gradient in the process of ongoing permafrost thaw at Stordalen. Model results were compared with multiyear field measurements, and the validation indicates that DNDC was able to simulate observed differences in seasonal soil thaw, NEE, and CH4 fluxes across the three land cover types. Consistent with the results from field studies, the modeled C fluxes across the permafrost thaw gradient demonstrate that permafrost thaw and the associated changes in soil hydrology and vegetation not only increase net uptake of C from the atmosphere but also increase the annual to decadal radiative forcing impacts on climate due to increased CH4 emissions. This study indicates the potential of utilizing biogeochemical models, such as DNDC, to predict the soil thermal regime in permafrost areas and to investigate impacts of permafrost thaw on ecosystem C fluxes after incorporating a permafrost component into the model framework
Challenges of Primary Frequency Control and Benefits of Primary Frequency Response Support from Electric Vehicles
As the integration of wind generation displaces conventional plants, system inertia provided by rotating mass declines, causing concerns over system frequency stability. This paper implements an advanced stochastic scheduling model with inertia-dependent fast frequency response requirements to investigate the challenges on the primary frequency control in the future Great Britain electricity system. The results suggest that the required volume and the associated cost of primary frequency response increase significantly along with the increased capacity of wind plants. Alternative measures (e.g. electric vehicles) have been proposed to alleviate these concerns. Therefore, this paper also analyses the benefits of primary frequency response support from electric vehicles in reducing system operation cost, wind curtailment and carbon emissions
Relationship between the gamma-ray burst pulse width and energy due to the Doppler effect of fireballs
We study in details how the pulse width of gamma-ray bursts is related with
energy under the assumption that the sources concerned are in the stage of
fireballs. Due to the Doppler effect of fireballs, there exists a power law
relationship between the two quantities within a limited range of frequency.
The power law range and the power law index depend strongly on the observed
peak energy as well as the rest frame radiation form, and the upper and
lower limits of the power law range can be determined by . It is found
that, within the same power law range, the ratio of the of the rising
portion to that of the decaying phase of the pulses is also related with energy
in the form of power laws. A platform-power-law-platform feature could be
observed in the two relationships. In the case of an obvious softening of the
rest frame spectrum, the two power law relationships also exist, but the
feature would evolve to a peaked one. Predictions on the relationships in the
energy range covering both the BATSE and Swift bands for a typical hard burst
and a typical soft one are made. A sample of FRED (fast rise and exponential
decay) pulse bursts shows that 27 out of the 28 sources belong to either the
platform-power-law-platform feature class or the peaked feature group,
suggesting that the effect concerned is indeed important for most of the
sources of the sample. Among these bursts, many might undergo an obvious
softening evolution of the rest frame spectrum.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
Gunrock: A High-Performance Graph Processing Library on the GPU
For large-scale graph analytics on the GPU, the irregularity of data access
and control flow, and the complexity of programming GPUs have been two
significant challenges for developing a programmable high-performance graph
library. "Gunrock", our graph-processing system designed specifically for the
GPU, uses a high-level, bulk-synchronous, data-centric abstraction focused on
operations on a vertex or edge frontier. Gunrock achieves a balance between
performance and expressiveness by coupling high performance GPU computing
primitives and optimization strategies with a high-level programming model that
allows programmers to quickly develop new graph primitives with small code size
and minimal GPU programming knowledge. We evaluate Gunrock on five key graph
primitives and show that Gunrock has on average at least an order of magnitude
speedup over Boost and PowerGraph, comparable performance to the fastest GPU
hardwired primitives, and better performance than any other GPU high-level
graph library.Comment: 14 pages, accepted by PPoPP'16 (removed the text repetition in the
