    A reconfigurable beam-scanning partially reflective surface (PRS) antenna

    © 2015 EurAAP. A novel reconfigurable partially reflective surface (PRS) antenna is presented in this paper. The beam scanning ability is realized by employing a reconfigurable PRS structure and a phased array as the source. The design achieves a beam switching between -15°, 0°, to 15° with respect to the broadside direction from 5.5 GHz to 5.7 GHz with the realized gains over 12 dBi. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results is achieved

    © 2016 European Association of Antennas and Propagation. This paper proposes a wideband polarization reconfigurable antenna design for WLAN applications. It consists of a shorted annular patch (SAP) antenna as the source, a partially reflective surface (PRS) structure to enhance the gain, and a reconfigurable Wilkinson power divider as the feed network. The antenna can electronically alter its polarization between linear polarization (LP), left-hand circular polarization (LHCP), and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP),achieving an overlapped 10dB impedance bandwidth and 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidth of 4.68-5.33 GHz (13%), thus outperforming most of the reported polarization reconfigurable antennas in terms of the frequency bandwidth

    Ambulatory blood pressure is critical in predicting some major cardiovascular events; therefore, cuff-less and noninvasive beat-to-beat ambulatory blood pressure measure-ment is of great significance. Machine-learning methods have shown the potential to derive the relationship between physio-logical signal features and ABP. In this paper, we apply random forest method to systematically explorer the inherent connections between photoplethysmography signal, electrocardiogram signal and ambulatory blood pressure. To archive this goal, 18 features were extracted from PPG and ECG signals. Several models with most significant features as inputs and beat-to-beat ABP as outputs were trained and tested on data from the Multi-Parameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care II database. Results indicate that compared with the common pulse transit time method, the RF method gives a better performance for one-hour continuous estimation of diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure under both the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation and British Hyper-tension Society standard

    Enhancement of seawater corrosion resistance in copper using acetone-derived graphene coating

    We show that acetone-derived graphene coating can effectively enhance the corrosion efficiency of copper (Cu) in a seawater environment (0.5-0.6 M (???3.0-3.5%) sodium chloride). By applying a drop of acetone (???20 ??l cm-2) on Cu surfaces, rapid thermal annealing allows the facile and rapid synthesis of graphene films on Cu surfaces with a monolayer coverage of almost close to ???100%. Under optimal growth conditions, acetone-derived graphene is found to have a relatively high crystallinity, comparable to common graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition. The resulting graphene-coated Cu surface exhibits 37.5 times higher corrosion resistance as compared to that of mechanically polished Cu. Further, investigation on the role of graphene coating on Cu surfaces suggests that the outstanding corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) of 97.4% is obtained by protecting the underlying Cu against the penetration of both dissolved oxygen and chlorine ions, thanks to the closely spaced atomic structure of the graphene sheets. The increase of graphene coating thickness results in the enhancement of the overall corrosion IE up to ???99%, which can be attributed to the effective blocking of the ionic diffusion process via grain boundaries. Overall, our results suggest that the acetone-derived graphene film can effectively serve as a corrosion-inhibiting coating in the seawater level and that it may have a promising role to play for potential offshore coating.close0
