    Do Patterns Really Exist?: Mallarme, Oulipo and The Performance of Constellations

    Fibonacci has shown us that nature can follow mathematical sequences. The strawberry, for instance, contains seeds in two spirals: 8 + 13 = 21 and 13 + 21 = 34. What makes the strawberry particularly interesting is that, whilst following this rigid structure in terms of its seed formation, it develops from a larger 'rhizomatic' arrangement: its supporting runners cross over and swerve in indeterminate directions. The growth and structure of the strawberry (formal patterns ensconced within a more unpredictable and arbitrary network) can be seen as emblematic of the ways in which art and language perform in postmodernity, and may be explored in terms of a 'pataphysical reality of 'as if' rather than one of 'as it is'. This paper is interested in the use of 'mathematical' patterns and constraints in poetry, and what these imply for our understanding of language and 'reality' in relation to nature and 'natural patterns'. With help from Stephane Mallarme's 'performed constellation' in Un Coup de Des, and the mathetic, Oulipian writings of Raymond Queneau and Georges Perec, I will contemplate the (in)stabilities produced by excepted poetics, questioning whether or not 'order' in the universe is a dynamic, postmodern field of 'particulars', as opposed to a fixed, pre-established fact

    Thanks for coming: four archival collections and the counterculture

    The early to mid-1960s bore witness to the birth of the Underground, a loose collection of writers, artists and activists who were united in their opposition to mainstream culture, and in particular to consumerism and war. Beginning in the United States, where the Vietnam War galvanized youth protest, and building on spirit of Beat Generation, who rebelled against the conformity of life during the previous decade, the Underground spread across the Atlantic to the UK and Europe, later becoming a global phenomenon. During the 1960s, editors, artists and activists forged extensive networks across the globe through letters, underground newspapers and little poetry magazines, much of which was printed on cheap paper, with little regard for posterity. By the late 1960s, there was a burgeoning international underground, which is underscored by the life and work of the artists, writers and editors discussed in this collaborative article. Jeff Nuttall (1933-2004) was based in the UK but created networks across the globe through the editorship of his little poetry magazine; Dave Cunliffe (1941-), based in the north of England, published works by US activists and poets in his poetry magazines and books; Jim Haynes (1933-), an American based for many years in Edinburgh and London, connected writers and artists across the world through the Arts Lab and as an editor of IT, Europe’s first underground newspaper; and Harvey Marshall Matusow (1926-2002), worked in underground newspapers, first in New York, and then London. As the archives of these underground participants attest, the counterculture was a vibrant international phenomenon, albeit one that was slow to recognise the importance of women in the counterculture

    Distinguishing the effects of Ce nanoparticles from their dissolution products : identification of transcriptomic biomarkers that are specific for ionic Ce in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

    Cerium (Ce) is a rare earth element that is incorporated in numerous consumer products, either in its cationic form or as engineered nanoparticles (ENPs). Given the propensity of small oxide particles to dissolve, it is unclear whether biological responses induced by ENPs will be due to the nanoparticles themselves or rather due to their dissolution. This study provides the foundation for the development of transcriptomic biomarkers that are specific for ionic Ce in the freshwater alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, exposed either to ionic Ce or to two different types of small Ce ENPs (uncoated, ∼10 nm, or citrate-coated, ∼4 nm). Quantitative reverse transcription PCR was used to analyse mRNA levels of four ionic Ce-specific genes (Cre17g.737300, MMP6, GTR12, and HSP22E) that were previously identified by whole transcriptome analysis in addition to two oxidative stress biomarkers (APX1 and GPX5). Expression was characterized for exposures to 0.03–3 µM Ce, for 60–360 min and for pH 5.0–8.0. Near-linear concentration–response curves were obtained for the ionic Ce and as a function of exposure time. Some variability in the transcriptomic response was observed as a function of pH, which was attributed to the formation of metastable Ce species in solution. Oxidative stress biomarkers analysed at transcriptomic and cellular levels confirmed that different effects were induced for dissolved Ce in comparison to Ce ENPs. The measured expression levels confirmed that changes in Ce speciation and the dissolution of Ce ENPs greatly influence Ce bioavailability

    Technical considerations in green roof retrofit for stormwater attenuation in the central business district

Purpose – The key aspects that built environment professionals need to consider when evaluating roofs for the purpose of green roof retrofit and also when assessing green roofs for technical due diligence purposes are outlined. Although green or sod roofs have been built over many centuries, contemporary roofs adopt new approaches and technologies. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – A mixed methods design based on a systematic review of relevant literature from parallel disciplines was used to identify and quantify the social, economic and environmental benefits of retrofitted green roofs in commercial districts. The technical issues of concern were drawn from a desk-top survey of literature and from stakeholder focus groups undertaken in Sydney in 2012. Findings – There are perceptions amongst built environmental practitioners that may act as artificial barriers to uptake. There is little direct experience within built environment professionals and practitioners, along with a fear of the unknown and a risk averse attitude towards perceived innovation which predicates against green roof retrofit. Furthermore projects with green roofs at inception and early design stage are often “value engineered” out of the design as time progresses. There is a need for best practice guidance notes for practitioners to follow when appraising roofs for retrofit and also for technical due diligence purposes. Research limitations/implications – The focus groups are limited to Sydney-based practitioners. Although many of these practitioners have international experience, few had experience of green roofs. A limited number of roof typologies were considered in this research and some regions and countries may adopt different construction practices. Practical implications – In central business districts the installation of green roof technology is seen as one of the main contributors to water sensitive urban design (WSUD). It is likely that more green roofs will be constructed over time and practitioners need knowledge of the technology as well as the ability to provide best advice to clients. Originality/value – The benefits of green roofs as part of WSUD are increasingly being recognised in terms of reduced flood risk, reduced cost of drainage, improved water quality and lower energy use, as well as other less tangible aspects such as aesthetics and amenity. This research highlights the lack of understanding of the short- and long-term benefits, a poor appreciation and awareness of these benefits; a lack of technical knowledge and issues to be considered with regard to green roofs on behalf of practitioners. The study has highlighted the need for specific training and up-skilling in these areas to provide surveyors with the technical expertise needed. There is also a need to consider how the emerging retrofit and adaptation themes are best designed into the curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Clearly, if the potential benefits of green roofs are to be realised in the future, building professionals need to be fully conversant with the technology and be able to provide reliable and accurate advice
