He rose from a life in slavery to become the most prominent African-American of his day and a leading figure in the abolitionist movement. Lost in the discussion of his life are the adult education roles that he played throughout his life and career. Beginning while he was still a slave and extending until his death, he worked to educate adults in order to transfonn individual lives and society as a whole. Douglass was primarily engaged in adult education in the fields of religious adult education, social movements, popular education, and political activism

An experimental full-depth pavement was constructed on the Cannonsburg-Ashland Road (US 60), and the mechanical response of each asphaltic concrete layer to static and dynamic loading has been tested during construction. This report is a documentation of section designs and construction procedures and summarily presents construction test results to be used in future analyses

    Ethical Issues and Decision Making in Collaborative Financial Therapy

    The purpose of this article is to introduce potential ethical challenges that may arise when a financial and mental health professional collaborate to provide financial therapy and recommendations on how to effectively address these concerns. The development of ethical and professional practices requires extensive dialogue from practitioners in the emerging field of financial therapy; however, it is important to first develop an awareness and sensitivity to the ethical and professional issues across disciplines. This article examines the differences and similarities between the codes of ethics of different financial and mental health disciplines, and addresses six core ethical and professional issues: dual relationships, confidentiality, collaborating with other professionals, fee management, use of technology, and attending to federal and state regulatory laws. In working through the complexity of different disciplines’ regulatory environments, a discussion of how to address these ethical questions in order to progress the financial therapy field is presented

    Effect of Donor Langerhans Cells on Corneal Graft Rejection

    Unlike other cutaneous surfaces, the central portion of the corneal epithelium is typically devoid of Langerhans cells. The absence of Ia+ Langerhans cells in the central cornea is of more than casual interest and may explain the immunologic privilege that is characteristic of corneal allografts. The present communication, summarizes previous studies that examined the role of corneal Langerhans cells in eliciting alloimmune responses and corneal graft rejection in rodents. Under normal circumstances, cornmeal allografts are poorly immunogenic when residing in the avascular ocular graft bed even though the graft displays large quantities of alloantigens. The afferent blockade of the immune response can be circumvented by donor-derived Langerhans cells that serve as potent immunogens for all categories of corneal allografts except grafts involving allodisparity only at class I major histocompatibility complex loci. Thus, the presence of donor-derived Langerhans cells exerts profound effects on the fate of corneal allografts

    Cell Kinetic Basis for Pathophysiology of Psoriasis

    Studies on the cell proliferation kinetics of psoriatic epidermal cells are presented and the results compared to similar studies for normal epidermis. The short 36-h duration of the psoriatic cell cycle (Tc) is confirmed with the first double-peaked fraction of labeled mitoses (FLM) curve in human subjects. The growth fraction of psoriasis using two experimental techniques approximates 100% within 36 h, confirming the rapid Tc found by the FLM method. The cell kinetic basis for the pathophysiology of psoriasis consists of at least 3 proliferative abnormalities in comparison to normal epidermis. By far the largest alteration is the shortening of the Tc from 311 to 36 h. There is also a doubling of the proliferative cell population in psoriasis from 27,000 to 52,000 cells/mm and an increase in the growth fraction from 60% to 100%. As a consequence of these abnormalities the psoriatic epidermis produces 35,000 cells/day from a proliferative compartment of 52,000 cells/mm2 surface area. This is a 28-fold greater production of cells than the 1,246 cells/day produced in normal epidermis. The biochemical or control factors leading to these kinetic differences continue to remain elusive
