    Tensor Network Based Finite-Size Scaling for Two-Dimensional Classical Models

    We propose a scheme to perform tensor network based finite-size scaling analysis for two-dimensional classical models. In the tensor network representation of the partition function, we use higher-order tensor renormalization group (HOTRG) method to coarse grain the weight tensor. The renormalized tensor is then used to construct the approximated transfer matrix of an infinite strip of finite width. By diagonalizing the transfer matrix we obtain the correlation length, the magnetization, and the energy density which are used in finite-size scaling analysis to determine the critical temperature and the critical exponents. As a benchmark we study the two-dimensional classical Ising model. We show that the critical temperature and the critical exponents can be accurately determined. With HOTRG bond dimension D=70D=70, the absolute errors of the critical temperature TcT_c and the critical exponent ν\nu, β\beta are at the order of 107,10510^{-7}, 10^{-5}, 10410^{-4} respectively. Furthermore, the results can be systematically improved by increasing the bond dimension of the HOTRG method. Finally, we study the length scale induced by the finite cut-off in bond dimension and elucidate its physical meaning in this context

    Technology Anxiety and Implicit Learning Ability Affect Technology Leadership to Promote the use of Information Technology at Elementary Schools

    Abstract“Oversold & underused” is a criticism by Cuban (2001) of the investment of information technology (IT) in the classroom. Recently, Taiwan's educational administration has provided considerable financial support to IT in elementary schools, but few reports have provided evidence of its successful use. The present study aims to identify the personal factors that affect principals’ beliefs about the promotion of IT in their schools. 331 data were collected and analyzed with AMOS 19.0. The results of this study indicated that greater technology anxiety was negatively associated with perceived ease of using (PEU) IT, whereas implicit learning ability was positively correlated with perceived usefulness of IT. Technology leadership increased significantly with PEU and perceived usefulness (PU), it is also associated with the intention to overcome difficulties in promoting information technology in schools. The implications of this study may contribute to the reduction of principals’ technology anxiety, increasing their implicit learning ability and therefore fostering the future implementation of IT in schools, changing the myth of technology as “oversold & underused”

    Evaluation of an Adjustable Epidemiologic Information System

    BACKGROUND: In order to facilitate public health response and to achieve early control of infectious disease epidemics, an adjustable epidemiologic information system (AEIS) was established in the Taiwan public health network in February 2006. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The performance of AEIS for the period 2006 through 2008 was evaluated based on a number of response times (RT) and the public health impact. After implementation of the system, the apparent overall shortened RT was mainly due to the shortening of personnel response time (PRT) and the time needed to draft a new questionnaire that incurred as personnel-system interface (PSI); PRT dropped from a fluctuating range of 9.8 ∼28.8 days in the first four months to <10 days in the following months and remained low till 2008 (0.88±1.52 days). The PSIs for newly emerged infectious diseases were 2.6 and 3.4 person-hours for H5N1 in 2007 and chikungunya in 2008, respectively, a much improvement from 1142.5 person-hours for SARS in 2003. The duration of each rubella epidemic cluster was evaluated as public health impact and showed a shortening trend (p = 0.019) that concurred with the shortening of PRT from 64.8±47.3 to 25.2±38.2 hours per cluster (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The first evaluation of the novel instrument AEIS that had been used to assist Taiwan's multi-level government for infectious diseases control demonstrated that it was well integrated into the existing public health infrastructure. It provided flexible tools and computer algorithms with friendly interface for timely data collection, integration, and analysis; as a result, it shortened RTs, filled in gaps of personnel lacking sufficient experiences, created a more efficient flow of response, and identified asymptomatic/mild cases early to minimize further spreading. With further development, AEIS is anticipated to be useful in the application of other acute public health events needing immediate orchestrated data collection and public health actions

    Recent guidelines of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, and the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver 2008 update of the “Asian-Pacific consensus statement on the management of chronic hepatitis B” offer comprehensive recommendations for the general management of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). These recommendations highlight preferred approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of CHB. Nonetheless, the results of recent studies have led to an improved understanding of the disease and a belief that current recommendations on specific therapeutic considerations, including CHB treatment initiation and cessation criteria, particularly in patient populations with special circumstances, can be improved. Twelve experts from the Asia-Pacific region formed the Asia-Pacific Panel Recommendations for the Optimal Management of Chronic Hepatitis B (APPROACH) Working Group to review, challenge, and assess relevant new data and inform future updates of CHB treatment guidelines. The significance of and controversy about reported findings were discussed and debated in an expert meeting of the Working Group in Beijing, China, in November 2008. This review paper attempts to identify areas requiring improved CHB management and provide suggestions for future guideline updates, with special emphasis on treatment initiation and duration

    The telomerase-recruitment domain of the telomere binding protein Cdc13 is regulated by Mec1p/Tel1p-dependent phosphorylation

    The DNA damage-responsive protein kinases ATM and ATR phosphorylate SQ/TQ motifs that lie in clusters in most of their in vivo targets. Budding yeast Cdc13p contains two clusters of SQ/TQ motifs, suggesting that it might be a target of Mec1p/Tel1p (yeast ATR/ATM). Here we demonstrated that the telomerase recruitment domain of Cdc13p is phosphorylated by Mec1p and Tel1p. Gel analysis showed that Cdc13p contains a Mec1/Tel1-dependent post-translational modification. Using an immunoprecipitate (IP)-kinase assay, we showed that Mec1p phosphorylates Cdc13p on serine 225, 249, 255 and 306, and Tel1p phosphorylates Cdc13p on serine 225, 249 and 255 in vitro. Phenotypic analysis in vivo revealed that the mutations in the Cdc13p SQ motifs phosphorylated by Mec1p and Tel1p caused multiple telomere and growth defects. In addition, normal telomere length and growth could be restored by expressing a Cdc13–Est1p hybrid protein. These results demonstrate the telomerase recruitment domain of Cdc13p as an important new telomere-specific target of Mec1p/Tel1p
