    Evaluation of Stockpiled Berseem Clover and Brown Midrib Sorghum x Sudangrass as Supplements for Grazed Cornstalks in Beef Cow Wintering Systems

    Berseem clover and oats were incorporated into a corn-oat/berseem clover rotation in 1994-1996. Two cuttings of oat-berseem clover hay were harvested during the summer before forage was stockpiled for winter grazing. In 1995, brown midrib sorghum x sudangrass hybrid was seeded into a field adjacent to a corn field. This was repeated in 1996 with a standard sorghum x sudangrass hybrid. After corn harvest in 1994–1996, Charolais x Angus x Simmental cows and heifers in midgestation were allotted to corn crop residue, corn crop residue-berseem clover, and corn crop residue-sorghum x sudangrass fields at 2.5 acres/cow, or to a drylot. Berseem clover had greater concentration of digestible organic matter and crude protein than corn crop residues. Corn crop residue digestible organic matter concentration was lower than berseem clover and the brown midrib sorghum x sudangrass, but was higher than that of the standard sorghum x sudangrass hybrid in 1996. Cows grazing corn crop residues without complementary forages required an average of 2,374 less lb. hay per cow than cows maintained in a drylot in 1994-1996. In 1994 and 1996, simultaneous grazing of berseem clover with corn crop residues did not reduce hay feeding more than feeding corn crop residues alone, yet did significantly reduce the amount of hay needed in 1995 to maintain cows by 358 and 376 lb. hay per cow compared with grazing corn crop residues without complementary forage

    Analysis of the structure and substrate scope of chitooligosaccharide oxidase reveals high affinity for C2-modified glucosamines

    Chitooligosaccharide oxidase (ChitO) is a fungal carbohydrate oxidase containing a bicovalently bound FAD cofactor. The enzyme is known to catalyse the oxidation of chitooligosaccharides, oligomers of N-acetylated glucosamines derived from chitin degradation. In this study, the unique substrate acceptance was explored by testing a range of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine derivatives, revealing that ChitO preferentially accepts carbohydrates with a hydrophobic group attached to C2. The enzyme also accepts streptozotocin, a natural product used to treat tumours. Elucidation of the crystal structure provides an explanation for the high affinity towards C2-decorated glucosamines: the active site has a secondary binding pocket that accommodates groups attached at C2. Docking simulations are fully in line with the observed substrate preference. This work expands the knowledge on this versatile enzyme

    Admissions to acute adolescent psychiatric units: a prospective study of clinical severity and outcome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several countries have established or are planning acute psychiatric in-patient services that accept around-the-clock emergency admission of adolescents. Our aim was to investigate the characteristics and clinical outcomes of a cohort of patients at four Norwegian units.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used a prospective pre-post observational design. Four units implemented a clinician-rated outcome measure, the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales for Children and Adolescents (HoNOSCA), which measures mental health problems and their severity. We collected also data about the diagnoses, suicidal problems, family situations, and the involvement of the Child Protection Service. Predictions of outcome (change in HoNOSCA <it>total score</it>) were analysed with a regression model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The sample comprised 192 adolescents admitted during one year (response rate 87%). Mean age was 15.7 years (range 10-18) and 70% were girls. Fifty-eight per cent had suicidal problems at intake and the mean <it>intake </it>HoNOSCA <it>total score </it>was 18.5 (SD 6.4). The largest groups of main diagnostic conditions were <it>affective </it>(28%) and <it>externalizing </it>(26%) <it>disorders</it>. Diagnoses and other patient characteristics at intake did not differ between units. Clinical psychiatric disorders and developmental disorders were associated with severity (on HoNOSCA) at intake but not with outcome. Of adolescents ≥ 16 years, 33% were compulsorily admitted. Median length of stay was 8.5 days and 75% of patients stayed less than a month. Compulsory admissions and length of stay varied between units. Mean change (improvement) in the HoNOSCA <it>total score </it>was 5.1 (SD 6.2), with considerable variation between units. Mean discharge score was close to the often-reported outpatient level, and <it>self-injury </it>and <it>emotional symptoms </it>were the most reduced symptoms during the stay. In a regression model, unit, high HoNOSCA <it>total score </it>at intake, or involvement of the Child Protection Service predicted improvement during admission.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Acute psychiatric in-patient units for adolescents effectively meet important needs for young people with suicidal risks or other severe mental health problems. These units may act in suicide prevention, stabilizing symptom severity at a lower level within a short stay. It is important to explore the differences in outcome, compulsory admissions, and length of stay between units.</p

    Outcome of Communication Training in Veterinary Studies: Influence on the Perception of the Relevance of Veterinary Competencies and Self-Assessment of Communication Skills

    Since communication skills contribute significantly to professional success among veterinarians, there is a particular focus on developing communication classes in veterinary curricula. At Freie Universität Berlin, an e-learning course covering the basics of communication and a practical communication course based on role plays with and without simulation persons have been established. The outcome of these communication courses on the assessment of the relevance of several veterinary competencies and on the self-assessment of communication skills using the SE-12 questionnaire was investigated. For this purpose, students were surveyed before and after the e-learning course as well as before and after the practical course. Veterinarians were also surveyed on the relevance of veterinary competencies. The relevance of communicative competencies for professional success was rated significantly higher by the students after completing the practical course than by the other students and the veterinarians. Self-assessment of communication skills showed little increase after the e-learning course, but a significant increase after the practical course. Thus, an effective outcome of the communication classes was observed mainly after the practical course. However, the effect of the e-learning course cannot be ruled out since the students participating in the practical course have also completed the e-learning course beforehand
