    Eclipsing Binaries in Open Clusters

    Detached eclipsing binaries are very useful objects for calibrating theoretical stellar models and checking their predictions. Detached eclipsing binaries in open clusters are particularly important because of the additional constraints on their age and chemical composition from their membership of the cluster. I compile a list containing absolute parameters of well-studied eclipsing binaries in open clusters, and present new observational data on the B-type systems V1481 Cyg and V2263 Cyg which are members of the young open cluster NGC 7128.Comment: 4 pages, 2 colour figures.     Chenodeoxycholic acid stimulates glucagon-like peptide-1 secretion in patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

    Postprandial secretion of glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1) is enhanced after Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass (RYGB), but the precise molecular mechanisms explaining this remain poorly understood. Plasma concentrations of bile acids (BAs) increase after RYGB, and BAs may act as molecular enhancers of GLP‐1 secretion through activation of TGR5‐receptors. We aimed to evaluate GLP‐1 secretion after oral administration of the primary bile acid chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and the secondary bile acid ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) (which are available for oral use) in RYGB‐operated participants. Eleven participants (BMI 29.1 ± 1.2, age 37.0 ± 3.2 years, time from RYGB 32.3 ± 1.1 months, weight loss after RYGB 37.0 ± 3.1 kg) were studied in a placebo‐controlled, crossover‐study. On three different days, participants ingested (1) placebo (water), (2) UDCA 750 mg, (3) CDCA 1250 mg (highest recommended doses). Oral intake of CDCA increased plasma concentrations of GLP‐1, C‐peptide, glucagon, peptide YY, neurotensin, total bile acids, and fibroblast growth factor 19 significantly compared with placebo (all P < 0.05 for peak and positive incremental area‐under‐the‐curve (piAUC)). All plasma hormone concentrations were unaffected by UDCA. Neither UDCA nor CDCA changed glucose, cholecystokinin or glucose‐dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) concentrations. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that the primary bile acid chenodeoxycholic acid is able to enhance secretion of gut hormones when administered orally in RYGB‐operated patients—even in the absence of nutrients

    Absolute dimensions of solar-type eclipsing binaries

    We present complete uvby light curves of 9 recently discovered eclipsing binaries having late F, G, and K type components within or near the main-sequence band. They are the first results from a long term program carried out since 1994 at the Strömgren Automatic Telescope at ESO, La Silla. The aim is to provide the accurate absolute dimensions for solar-type stars needed for critical tests of the corresponding theoretical models. A serious dilemma appears to be present in the comparison of predictions from current stellar models with fundamental properties of known 0.7−1.1M⊙0.7{-}1.1 M_{\odot} eclipsing binaries (Popper [CITE], Clausen et al. [CITE]). Spectroscopic observations of the 9 eclipsing binaries are either available or are being obtained, and detailed analyses of the individual systems will be published in a series of subsequent papers. The light curves were obtained as part of a systematic search for new eclipsing systems among a large sample of (mostly) spectroscopic binaries. Catalogues of the extensive uvby and ÎČ photometry from this search will be published separately

    We present a detailed study of the G0V detached eclipsing binary EW Ori, based on new photometric and spectroscopic observations. Masses and radii that are precise to 0.9% and 0.5%, respectively, have been established for both components. The 1.12 Msun secondary component reveals weak Ca II H and K emission and is probably mildly active; no signs of activity are seen for the 1.17 Msun primary. We derive an [Fe/H] abundance of +0.05 +/- 0.09 and similar abundances for Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, and Ni. Yonsai-Yale and Granada solar-scaled evolutionary models for the observed metal abundance reproduce the components fairly well at an age of approx. 2 Gyr. Perfect agreement is, however, obtained at an age of 2.3 Gyr for a combination of a) a slight downwards adjustment of the envelope mixing length parameter for the secondary, as seen for other active solar-type stars, and b) a slightly lower helium content than prescribed by the Y-Z relations adopted for the standard model grids. The orbit is eccentric (e = 0.0758 +/- 0.0020), and apsidal motion with a 62% relativistic contribution has been detected. The apsidal motion period is U = 16300 +/- 3900 yr, and the inferred mean central density concentration coefficient, log(k_2) = -1.66 +/- 0.30, agrees marginally with model predictions. The measured rotational velocities, 9.0 +/- 0.7 (primary) and 8.8 +/- 0.6 (secondary) km/s, are in agreement with both the synchronous velocities and the theoretically predicted pseudo-synchronous velocities. Finally, the distance (175 +/- 7 pc), age, and center-of mass velocity (6 km/s) exclude suggested membership of the open cluster Collinder 70. EW Ori now belongs to the small group of solar-type eclipsing binaries with well-established astrophysical properties.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    New Strategic Tools for Supply Chain Management

    Intense global competition has created a highly demanding customer. To serve his needs for highvariety, low cost, sound quality and easy availability, organisations are looking beyond their own boundaries to the management of their supply chains. In this they have been inspired by the typical Far Eastern, and the very best Western, practice. But supply chain management is still a hope not a reality for many companies. On the one hand there is an array of “panaceas” on offer for our “sick” businesses; new technology, computer integrated manufacturing, the Just-in-Time approach, total quality management, and more besides. On the other hand supply chain management has few specific tools of its own. To the manager busy holding on to his market share it is difficult to see where to start the process of making his operation more competitive. A three-stage approach to help companies see just which actions are likely to get the supply chain into better competitive shape is proposed. Also introduced are two simple graphical tools to help management develop a strategy for enhanced supply chain effectiveness: the pipeline map and the supplier relationship grid
