    Historische Zeitungen werden in nur wenigen Exemplaren und meist in gebundener Form in Bibliotheken und Archiven aufbewahrt. Diese Zeitungsbände sind aufgrund ihres Gewichts, ihrer Formatgrößen und der Fragilität der verwendeten dünnen und säurehaltigen Papiere konservatorische Sorgenkinder in Archiven und Bibliotheken. Gleichzeitig nimmt das Interesse an diesen Originalen zu (vgl. BIS 2012, H. 3, S. 189–191). Aktuell sind Zeitungen besonders für Forschungen zum Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg unverzichtbare Quellen (vgl. BIS 2014, H. 2, S. 90–91). Deshalb fördert die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft aktuell Pilotprojekte zur Digitalisierung wichtiger Zeitungen für eine gleichermaßen bestandsschonende wie uneingeschränkte Nutzung

    Spherical averages in the space of marked lattices

    A marked lattice is a dd-dimensional Euclidean lattice, where each lattice point is assigned a mark via a given random field on Zd{\mathbb Z}^d. We prove that, if the field is strongly mixing with a faster-than-logarithmic rate, then for every given lattice and almost every marking, large spheres become equidistributed in the space of marked lattices. A key aspect of our study is that the space of marked lattices is not a homogeneous space, but rather a non-trivial fiber bundle over such a space. As an application, we prove that the free path length in a crystal with random defects has a limiting distribution in the Boltzmann-Grad limit

    Air entrainment through free-surface cusps

    In many industrial processes, such as pouring a liquid or coating a rotating cylinder, air bubbles are entrapped inside the liquid. We propose a novel mechanism for this phenomenon, based on the instability of cusp singularities that generically form on free surfaces. The air being drawn into the narrow space inside the cusp destroys its stationary shape when the walls of the cusp come too close. Instead, a sheet emanates from the cusp's tip, through which air is entrained. Our analytical theory of this instability is confirmed by experimental observation and quantitative comparison with numerical simulations of the flow equations

    17Îą-hydroxylase deficiency diagnosed in early infancy caused by a novel mutation of the CYP17A1 Gene

    Mutations of the CYP17A1 gene cause 17Îą-hydroxylase deficiency (17OHD) resulting in 46,XY disorder of sex development, hypertension, hypokalemia and absent pubertal development. It is a rare, autosomal recessive form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).We report on a neonate with prenatally determined 46,XY karyotype. At 20 weeks of gestation, lack of development of male external genitalia was noticed. A phenotypically female child was born at 41 weeks of gestation.Postnatal ultrasound revealed testes in both labia majora, an absence of uterus and normal adrenal glands. Steroid hormone analysis in serum revealed low basal levels of cortisol, testosterone and androstenedione in the presence of massively elevated corticosterone at the age of 2 weeks. The urinary steroid profile from spot urine showed excessive excretion of 17-desoxysteroids, decreased glucocorticoid metabolites and absent C19 steroids, thus proving 17OHD. Molecular analysis identified a novel mutation of the CYP17A1 gene: c.896T>A (p.I299N) in exon 5. Substitution with hydrocortisone was started. The child is raised as a girl and is developing well so far.Herein, we report the unusually early diagnosis of a newborn with the rare CAH form of 17OHD allowing an early start of treatment

    SYSTOMONAS — an integrated database for systems biology analysis of Pseudomonas

    To provide an integrated bioinformatics platform for a systems biology approach to the biology of pseudomonads in infection and biotechnology the database SYSTOMONAS (SYSTems biology of pseudOMONAS) was established. Besides our own experimental metabolome, proteome and transcriptome data, various additional predictions of cellular processes, such as gene-regulatory networks were stored. Reconstruction of metabolic networks in SYSTOMONAS was achieved via comparative genomics. Broad data integration is realized using SOAP interfaces for the well established databases BRENDA, KEGG and PRODORIC. Several tools for the analysis of stored data and for the visualization of the corresponding results are provided, enabling a quick understanding of metabolic pathways, genomic arrangements or promoter structures of interest. The focus of SYSTOMONAS is on pseudomonads and in particular Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic human pathogen. With this database we would like to encourage the Pseudomonas community to elucidate cellular processes of interest using an integrated systems biology strategy. The database is accessible at

    Changes over time in characteristics, resource use and outcomes among ICU patients with COVID-19-A nationwide, observational study in Denmark

    BACKGROUND: Characteristics and care of intensive care unit (ICU) patients with COVID‐19 may have changed during the pandemic, but longitudinal data assessing this are limited. We compared patients with COVID‐19 admitted to Danish ICUs in the first wave with those admitted later. METHODS: Among all Danish ICU patients with COVID‐19, we compared demographics, chronic comorbidities, use of organ support, length of stay and vital status of those admitted 10 March to 19 May 2020 (first wave) versus 20 May 2020 to 30 June 2021. We analysed risk factors for death by adjusted logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Among all hospitalised patients with COVID‐19, a lower proportion was admitted to ICU after the first wave (13% vs. 8%). Among all 1374 ICU patients with COVID‐19, 326 were admitted during the first wave. There were no major differences in patient's characteristics or mortality between the two periods, but use of invasive mechanical ventilation (81% vs. 58% of patients), renal replacement therapy (26% vs. 13%) and ECMO (8% vs. 3%) and median length of stay in ICU (13 vs. 10 days) and in hospital (20 vs. 17 days) were all significantly lower after the first wave. Risk factors for death were higher age, larger burden of comorbidities (heart failure, pulmonary disease and kidney disease) and active cancer, but not admission during or after the first wave. CONCLUSIONS: After the first wave of COVID‐19 in Denmark, a lower proportion of hospitalised patients with COVID‐19 were admitted to ICU. Among ICU patients, use of organ support was lower and length of stay was reduced, but mortality rates remained at a relatively high level
