    In situ characterization of vertically oriented carbon nanofibers for three-dimensional nano-electro-mechanical device applications

    We have performed mechanical and electrical characterization of individual as-grown, vertically oriented carbon nanofibers (CNFs) using in situ techniques, where such high-aspect-ratio, nanoscale structures are of interest for three-dimensional (3D) electronics, in particular 3D nano-electro-mechanical-systems (NEMS). Nanoindentation and uniaxial compression tests conducted in an in situ nanomechanical instrument, SEMentor, suggest that the CNFs undergo severe bending prior to fracture, which always occurs close to the bottom rather than at the substrate–tube interface, suggesting that the CNFs are well adhered to the substrate. This is also consistent with bending tests on individual tubes which indicated that bending angles as large as ~70° could be accommodated elastically. In situ electrical transport measurements revealed that the CNFs grown on refractory metallic nitride buffer layers were conducting via the sidewalls, whereas those synthesized directly on Si were electrically unsuitable for low-voltage dc NEMS applications. Electrostatic actuation was also demonstrated with a nanoprobe in close proximity to a single CNF and suggests that such structures are attractive for nonvolatile memory applications. Since the magnitude of the actuation voltage is intimately dictated by the physical characteristics of the CNFs, such as diameter and length, we also addressed the ability to tune these parameters, to some extent, by adjusting the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition growth parameters with this bottom-up synthesis approach

    A histochemical technique, applicable to intact euphausiids, has been used in the laboratory to demonstrate variations in the level of subcuticular acid phosphatase activity during the molting cycle of Thysanoessa raschii; it shows that there is a marked increase in such activity during the 24 hours in which ecdysis occurs. We suggest that the technique could form a useful tool in future studies on euphausiid biology since it would allow, for example, assessments of the numbers of individuals in any one collection or population that is passing through this particular 24-hour period at the time of sampling

    There is a substantial body of literature relating to tourism’s economic impact at the macro level, but less is known about tourist expenditure at a micro scale. This paper reports findings from a survey of day-visitor expenditure by category at The Quays in Salford, UK. Expenditure is influenced strongly by the visitor’s age, frequency of visitation and visit motivation. Heavy, medium and light expenditure segments and associated profiles are identified. ‘Heavy spenders’ are more likely to be female, in a family group and have shopping as the main motivation for the visit. The implications of the findings are discussed

    Color transparency CT depends on the formation of a wavepacket of small spatial extent. It is useful to interpret experimental searches for CT with a multiple scattering scattering series based on wavepacket-nucleon scattering instead of the standard one using nucleon-nucleon scattering. We develop several new techniques which are valid for differing ranges of energy. These techniques are applied to verify some early approximations; study new forms of the wave-packet-nucleon interaction; examine effects of treating wave packets of non-zero size; and predict the production of N∗N^*'s in electron scattering experiments.Comment: 26 pages, U.Wa. preprint 40427-23-N9

    Sequences of experimental ground-state energies for both odd and even A are mapped onto concave patterns cured from convexities due to pairing. These patterns yield improved estimates by interpolation or extrapolation (as appropriate) of ground-state energies for nuclei, which have not yet been measured. An example of this procedure, using the tin isotopes is given. The same patterns, completed by a list of excitation energies, give numerical estimates of thermodynamical functions, which lead to the average nucleon number hAi(β, μ) becoming a continuous variable at low to moderate temperatures, allowing extrapolations towards nuclear masses closer to drip lines. Estimates of the free energy and the average energy, as functions of hAi, provide upper and lower bounds, respectively, to ground-state energy. Finally, we discuss extensions to a two-dimensional analysis and how concavity and universality are related to the theory of the nuclear density functional

    Japanese Encephalitis Virus Isolated From Seven Species Of Mosquitoes Collected At Semarang Regency, Central Java

    Suatu penelitian telah dilakukan untuk mengisolasi arbovirus dari nyamuk yang ditangkap dari rumah penduduk dan kandang ternak desa Susukan, kecamatan Ungaran, kabupaten Semarang. Pada periode penelitian yang dilakukan selama 2 tahun, isolasi virus hanya didapatkan pada bulan Januari dan Februari. Virus Japanese encephalitis (JEV) adalah satu-satunya virus yang dapat diisolasi. Mayoritas isolat JEV (72%) berasal dari nyamuk yang ditangkap di kandang ternak. Isolat JEV ini berusai dari 7 spesies nyamuk dengan frekuensi Culex quinquefasciatus yang paling tinggi (11.5%). Empat vektor JEV baru yang potensial di Indonesia adalah Cx.bitaeniorhynchus, Cx.quinquefasciatus, Anopheles kochi dan Armigeres subalbatus. Ini adalah laporan pertama tentang isolasi JEV dari An.kochi dan Ar.subalbatus di Asia
