    Paper Session I-A - Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as Technology Demonstrators for Advanced Range Systems

    This project consists of the development and operation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a technology demonstration test bed for advanced range systems under development at Kennedy Space Center. The goal is to acquire a reliable, rapidly accessible vehicle for initial flight testing of electronic payloads through a limited portion of airspace to verify basic communications, command and control, tracking, and telemetry functions. The cost and schedule benefits of the project should exceed the other available options of flight in actual manned aircraft or sounding rockets. The vehicle will be remotely piloted with a reliable command and control system independent of the devices under test. It must account for any failure modes, and have contingencies to maximize safety of the operations. The UAV will provide standardized mounting, protection, and power to the devices under test. Considerations of airspace, FAA regulations, and authorizations for UAV operations must be thoroughly evaluated. This rapid demonstration capability will expedite development and initial. testing of advanced range systems projects, and provide gains in overall UAV knowledge, at a reasonable cost. The project fits well within existing ARTWG (Advanced Range Technology Working Group) Roadmaps for the future of Range Systems

    Annovera (segesterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol vaginal system) is a US Food and Drug Administration FDA-approved long-lasting, reversible contraceptive that is fully administered by the user and does not require a procedure for insertion or removal. The vaginal system is in the shape of a ring and contains low doses of a novel progestin, egesterone acetate, and ethinyl estradiol. It is made of silicone and is fully pliable and flexible. The vaginal system is reusable for 13 cycles, using a 21 days in/7 days out regimen, providing women with the ability to control their fertility. Particularly now during the COVID-19 pandemic when access to contraception has been further reduced, patients may benefit from a method that is both long-lasting and patient-controlled

    Vaping: Exploring perceptions and behaviors of students and ENDS products

    Background: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have increased in use and media exposure with a 78% rise in usage between 2017 to 2018. While a gateway to addictive products, users are also unaware of the ingredients and their effects on the body. Interventions are limited. Further research is needed to investigate perceptions of ENDS and identify effective cessation strategies for young adults. Purpose: To explore the knowledge and attitudes of HS students regarding ENDS products and compare data collected over the year to determine effects of recent media exposure. Methods: Six focus groups (n = 45) were held in a rural high school. Students were asked four open ended questions which elicited dialogue regarding attitudes and behaviors about ENDS and suggestions for educational interventions. Results: Emerging themes were social and behavioral influences (peer pressure; nicotine addiction) ; knowledge deficit; media promotion or prevention. Suggested educational methods were explanation of the ingredients in ENDS, dramatic relief and visual depiction of the consequences. There was more focus in the media on prevention than last year. Conclusion/Implications: A knowledge deficit regarding the dangers of ENDS, including the damaging effects of nicotine, still exists.     Should 16-Year-Olds Be Allowed to Donate Blood? A Vermont Perspective

    Introduction: Supplying adequate blood for transfusions is an ongoing challenge for blood collection agencies. One potential source of increased Whole Blood (WB) supply is among 16-17 year-olds, whose donation rates are still quite low. In 2010, donors aged 16-18 years-old provided 14% of all WB collected by the American Red Cross. Young donors may represent an opportunity to establish a committed, long-term blood donation base as they are more likely to return after first donation and donate at a higher yield rate than older donors. However, younger donors also have higher rates of adverse events during donation. Currently, 38 states allow 16 year-olds to donate blood with parental consent but Vermont is not among them. Our study examines the public’s comfort with 16 year-olds donating blood. As blood donation is a voluntary system, ascertaining the perspective of the general population regarding this issue could contribute to a policy debate surrounding the minimum age of donation.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1065/thumbnail.jp

    Determining patient outcomes from patient letters: A comparison of text analysis approaches

    This paper presents a case study comparing text analysis approaches used to classify the current status of a patient to inform scheduling. It aims to help one of the UKs largest healthcare providers systematically capture patient outcome information following a clinic attendance, ensuring records are closed when a patient is discharged and follow-up appointments can be scheduled to occur within the time-scale required for safe, effective care. Analysing patient letters allows systematic extraction of discharge or follow-up information to automatically update a patient record. This clarifies the demand placed on the system, and whether current capacity is a barrier to timely access. Three approaches for systematic information capture are compared: phrase identification (using lexicons), word frequency analysis and supervised text mining. Approaches are evaluated according to their precision and stakeholder acceptability. Methodological lessons are presented to encourage project objectives to be considered alongside text classification methods for decision support tools

    Can Teachers Accurately Predict Student Performance?

    In two studies, we examined the effect of professional development to improve mathematics instruction on the accuracy of teachers\u27 monitoring of student learning. Study 1 was conducted with 36 teachers participating in three years of professional development. Judgment accuracy was influenced by the fidelity with which what was learned in the professional development. Study 2 was conducted with 64 teachers from 8 schools, which were randomly assigned to receive professional development or serve as a control. Judgment accuracy was greater for teachers receiving professional development than for teachers who did not and teachers were better to predict students\u27 computational skills

    Economic models for sustainable interprofessional education

    Limited information exists on funding models for interprofessional education (IPE) course delivery, even though potential savings from IPE could be gained in healthcare delivery efficiencies and patient safety. Unanticipated economic barriers to implementing an IPE curriculum across programs and schools in University settings can stymie or even end movement toward collaboration and sustainable culture change. Clarity among stakeholders, including institutional leadership, faculty, and students, is necessary to avoid confusion about IPE tuition costs and funds flow, given that IPE involves multiple schools and programs sharing space, time, faculty, and tuition dollars. In this paper, we consider three funding models for IPE: (a) Centralized (b) Blended, and (c) Decentralized. The strengths and challenges associated with each of these models are discussed. Beginning such a discussion will move us toward understanding the return on investment of IPE
