    Hegel's Concept of Desire

    Hegel’s assertion that self-consciousness is desire in general stands at a critical point in the Phenomenology, but the concept of desire employed in this identification is obscure. I examine three ways in which Hegel’s concept of desire might be understood and conclude that this concept is closely related to Fichte’s notions of drive and longing. So understood, the concept plays an essential role in Hegel’s non-foundational, non-genetic account of the awareness that individual rational subjects have of themselves. This account, I argue, is part of a larger concern with demonstrating the relation between theoretical and practical capacities of the subject. I also argue that my reading explains Hegel’s emphasis on the figure of the bondsman in “Lordship and Bondage.” The bondsman’s experience of itself and its world instantiates Hegel’s views on the integration of subjective capacities and the reality of objects of experience

    Understanding the Impact of Cross-Cultural Communication Between American and Japanese Businesses

    This thesis aims to investigate the cultural differences between American and Japanese society most relevant to successful business collaboration in relation to SIOS Technology Group. First, by providing an examination of the issues SIOS Technology Group has experienced as a company with businesses in both Japan and the United States, this case will provide context for the use of relevant frameworks for researching cultural differences. Second, this thesis analyzes relevant theories of cross-cultural research such as the CAGE Distance Framework, Hall’s Cultural Elements, Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions, and Schwartz’s Cultural Values in order to apply their concepts to SIOS Technology Group’s experience. In doing so, this paper attempts to identify what basis of understanding in cross-cultural communication American firms need in order to successfully do business with Japanese companies

    By a will to truth Nietzsche understands an overriding commitment, unlimited in scope, to believing in accordance with evidence and argument. I show that the critique of this commitment found in Nietzsche’s later works uncovers the psychological grounds of our modern will to truth and establishes its affinity with distinctively moral commitments. I argue that Nietzsche’s critique nevertheless provides no answer to his question concerning the value of a will to truth in general. Nietzsche’s examination of the will to truth aims instead to establish that we presently lack any standard for determining its value

    Operation of a brushless DC drive for application in hybrid electric vehicles

    One of the goals of a hybrid electric vehicle design is to improve the overall performance of the vehicle by incorporating several different power sources in such a way as to maximize the energy usage. By combining the desirable characteristics of each of the components in the system, the vehicle becomes more efficient to operate. Energy storage systems such as batteries and ultra-capacitors can be used to supply or store energy from the system when needed. The primary power source in this model will be an internal combustion engine coupled with a permanent magnet synchronous generator. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze simulation models of the power management system and coordinate these power sources to supply the needed power to a brushless DC motor which acts as part of the propulsion system of a vehicle --Abstract, page iii

    As a graphic designer, my goal is to clearly express my clients\u27 message to their intended audience. Based on the diversity of my clients and their products and services, finding a consistent style in my projects might be difficult, although there are usually some typical traits. With examples of my work and dialogue from leaders in the graphic design industry, I intend to point out a common thread that runs through all successful design projects, regardless of the projects\u27 designer, era, or individual design elements (e.g., typography, copywriting, color, layout, imagery). Success comes from graphic design\u27s ability to gain attention and encourage a response

    Update on the Juncture Flow PIV Results and Future Plans

    A novel, embedded, 2D Particle Image Velocimetry system has been developed and implemented to obtain off-body velocity measurements in the junction of an 8% wing-body configuration in the NASA Langley Research Center 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel. Although the initial purpose for implementing the system during this test was to evaluate system performance and identify potential risks, a considerable amount of data were obtained in the wing-fuselage junction near the trailing edge at a Reynolds Number of 2.4 Million and angle of attack of 5 degrees. In addition to providing notable efficiencies with regard to image acquisition and test operations, the PIV system captured unique details of the flow separation to complement the extensive suite of measurement techniques applied during the test. Instantaneous PIV vector fields reveal that the flow separation is not stationary but rather highly dynamic. Mean flow statistics calculated from the PIV measurements highlight where reverse flow and Reynolds stresses are concentrated in the separated region and agree well with results from the embedded Laser Doppler Velocimeter system and Computational Fluid Dynamics. The comparisons and ional insight gained during this effort will help guide system improvements for the upcoming entry in 2020

    Near-surface remote sensing of spatial and temporal variation in canopy phenology

    There is a need to document how plant phenology is responding to global change factors, particularly warming trends. “Near-surface” remote sensing, using radiometric instruments or imaging sensors, has great potential to improve phenological monitoring because automated observations can be made at high temporal frequency. Here we build on previous work and show how inexpensive, networked digital cameras (“webcams”) can be used to document spatial and temporal variation in the spring and autumn phenology of forest canopies. We use two years of imagery from a deciduous, northern hardwood site, and one year of imagery from a coniferous, boreal transition site. A quantitative signal is obtained by splitting images into separate red, green, and blue color channels and calculating the relative brightness of each channel for “regions of interest” within each image. We put the observed phenological signal in context by relating it to seasonal patterns of gross primary productivity, inferred from eddy covariance measurements of surface–atmosphere CO2 exchange. We show that spring increases, and autumn decreases, in canopy greenness can be detected in both deciduous and coniferous stands. In deciduous stands, an autumn red peak is also observed. The timing and rate of spring development and autumn senescence varies across the canopy, with greater variability in autumn than spring. Interannual variation in phenology can be detected both visually and quantitatively; delayed spring onset in 2007 compared to 2006 is related to a prolonged cold spell from day 85 to day 110. This work lays the foundation for regional- to continental-scale camera-based monitoring of phenology at network observatory sites, e.g., National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) or AmeriFlux
