Complete Analysis of Baryon Magnetic Moments in 1/N_c
We generate a complete basis of magnetic moment operators for the N_c = 3
ground-state baryons in the 1/N_c expansion, and compute and tabulate all
associated matrix elements. We then compare to previous results derived in the
literature and predict additional relations among baryon magnetic moments
holding to subleading order in 1/N_c and flavor SU(3) breaking. Finally, we
predict all unknown diagonal and transition magnetic moments to <= 0.15 mu_N
accuracy, and suggest possible experimental measurements to improve the
analysis even further.Comment: 28 pages (including 11 tables), ReVTeX. One reference and grant

NGTS-4b: A sub-Neptune transiting in the desert
We report the discovery of NGTS-4b, a sub-Neptune-sized planet transiting a 13th magnitude K-dwarf in a 1.34 d orbit. NGTS-4b has a mass M = 20.6 ± 3.0 M⊕ and radius R = 3.18 ± 0.26 R⊕, which places it well within the so-called ‘Neptunian Desert’. The mean density of the planet (3.45 ± 0.95 g cm−3) is consistent with a composition of 100 per cent H2O or a rocky core with a volatile envelope. NGTS-4b is likely to suffer significant mass loss due to relatively strong EUV/X-ray irradiation. Its survival in the Neptunian desert may be due to an unusually high-core mass, or it may have avoided the most intense X-ray irradiation by migrating after the initial activity of its host star had subsided. With a transit depth of 0.13 ± 0.02 per cent, NGTS-4b represents the shallowest transiting system ever discovered from the ground, and is the smallest planet discovered in a wide-field ground-based photometric survey
Bimodal Phase Diagram of the Superfluid Density in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Revealed by an Interfacial Waveguide Resonator
We explore the superconducting phase diagram of the two-dimensional electron
system at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface by monitoring the frequencies of the
cavity modes of a coplanar waveguide resonator fabricated in the interface
itself. We determine the phase diagram of the superconducting transition as a
function of temperature and electrostatic gating, finding that both the
superfluid density and the transition temperature follow a dome shape, but that
the two are not monotonically related. The ground state of this 2DES is
interpreted as a Josephson junction array, where a transition from long- to
short-range order occurs as a function of the electronic doping. The synergy
between correlated oxides and superconducting circuits is revealed to be a
promising route to investigate these exotic compounds, complementary to
standard magneto-transport measurements.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and 10 pages of supplementary materia
Cognitive work analysis : extensions and applications in command and control
'Complex sociotechnical systems' are systems made up of numerous interacting parts, both human and non-human, operating in dynamic, ambiguous and safety critical domains. The system design, and representation, has significant implications for the usability of the system, its performance, errors and reliability. Due to its formative constraint-based approach, Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) has been frequently proposed as a framework for modelling these complex systems, further it is contended that the approach can be extended to design for interaction without significant deviation from the accepted framework. This thesis presents a number of applications in complex military domains to explore and develop the benefits of CWA. Unlike much of the previous literature, particular attention is placed on exploring the CWA framework in its entirety. This holistic approach focuses on the system environment, the activity that takes place within it, the strategies used to conduct this activity, the way in which the constituent parts of the system (both human and non-human) interact and the behaviour required. Each stage of this analysis identifies the constraints governing the system; it is contended that through this holistic understanding of constraints, recommendations can be made for the design of system interaction; increasing the ability of users to cope with unanticipated, unexpected situations. This thesis discusses the applicability of the approach in system analysis, development and evaluation. It provides process to what was previously a loosely defined framework.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceHuman Sciences Domain of the UK Ministry of Defence Scientific Research ProgrammeGBUnited Kingdo
Hadron Spectrum with Wilson fermions
We present results of a high statistics study of the quenched spectrum using
Wilson fermions at on lattices. We calculate the
masses of mesons and baryons composed of both degenerate and non-degenerate
quarks. Using non-degenerate quark combinations allows us to study baryon mass
splittings in detail. We find significant deviations from the lowest order
chiral expansion, deviations that are consistent with the expectations of
quenched chiral perturbation theory. We find that there is a
systematic error in the extracted value of , depending on the meson mass
ratio used to set its value. Using the largest estimate of we find that
the extrapolated octet mass-splittings are in agreement with the experimental
values, as is , while the decuplet splittings are 30% smaller
than experiment. Combining our results with data from the GF11 collaboration we
find considerable ambiguity in the extrapolation to the continuum limit. Our
preferred values are and , suggesting that the quenched approximation is good to only . We also analyze the discretization errors in heavy quark
masses.Comment: 52 pages. Tex. Modified "axis" source for figures also included.

Excited Baryon Decay Widths in Large N_c QCD
We study excited baryon decay widths in large N_c QCD. It was suggested
previously that some spin-flavor mixed-symmetric baryon states have strong
couplings of O(N_c^{-1/2}) to nucleons [implying narrow widths of O(1/N_c)], as
opposed to the generic expectation based on Witten's counting rules of an
O(N_c^0) coupling. The calculation obtaining these narrow widths was performed
in the context of a simple quark-shell model. This paper addresses the question
of whether the existence of such narrow states is a general property of large
N_c QCD. We show that a general large N_c QCD analysis does not predict such
narrow states; rather they are a consequence of the extreme simplicity of the
quark model.Comment: 9 page
Studies of Diffuse Interstellar Bands. V. Pairwise Correlations of Eight Strong DIBs and Neutral Hydrogen, Molecular Hydrogen, and Color Excess
We establish correlations between equivalent widths of eight diffuse
interstellar bands (DIBs), and examine their correlations with atomic hydrogen,
molecular hydrogen, and EB-V . The DIBs are centered at \lambda\lambda 5780.5,
6204.5, 6283.8, 6196.0, 6613.6, 5705.1, 5797.1, and 5487.7, in decreasing order
of Pearson\^as correlation coefficient with N(H) (here defined as the column
density of neutral hydrogen), ranging from 0.96 to 0.82. We find the equivalent
width of \lambda 5780.5 is better correlated with column densities of H than
with E(B-V) or H2, confirming earlier results based on smaller datasets. We
show the same is true for six of the seven other DIBs presented here. Despite
this similarity, the eight strong DIBs chosen are not well enough correlated
with each other to suggest they come from the same carrier. We further conclude
that these eight DIBs are more likely to be associated with H than with H2, and
hence are not preferentially located in the densest, most UV shielded parts of
interstellar clouds. We suggest they arise from different molecules found in
diffuse H regions with very little H (molecular fraction f<0.01). Of the 133
stars with available data in our study, there are three with significantly
weaker \lambda 5780.5 than our mean H-5780.5 relationship, all of which are in
regions of high radiation fields, as previously noted by Herbig. The
correlations will be useful in deriving interstellar parameters when direct
methods are not available. For instance, with care, the value of N(H) can be
derived from W{\lambda}(5780.5).Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 37 pages, 11

Molecular Hydrogen in the FUSE Translucent Lines of Sight: The Full Sample
We report total abundances and related parameters for the full sample of the
FUSE survey of molecular hydrogen in 38 translucent lines of sight. New results
are presented for the "second half" of the survey involving 15 lines of sight
to supplement data for the first 23 lines of sight already published. We assess
the correlations between molecular hydrogen and various extinction parameters
in the full sample, which covers a broader range of conditions than the initial
sample. In particular, we are now able to confirm that many, but not all, lines
of sight with shallow far-UV extinction curves and large values of the
total-to-selective extinction ratio, = / -- characteristic
of larger than average dust grains -- are associated with particularly low
hydrogen molecular fractions (). In the lines of sight with large
, there is in fact a wide range in molecular fractions, despite the
expectation that the larger grains should lead to less H formation.
However, we see specific evidence that the molecular fractions in this
sub-sample are inversely related to the estimated strength of the UV radiation
field and thus the latter factor is more important in this regime. We have
provided an update to previous values of the gas-to-dust ratio, (H)/, based on direct measurements of (H) and (H I).
Although our value is nearly identical to that found with Copernicus data, it
extends the relationship by a factor of 2 in reddening. Finally, as the new
lines of sight generally show low to moderate molecular fractions, we still
find little evidence for single monolithic "translucent clouds" with 1.Comment: 35 pages, 5 tables, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The
