Effect of magnetic field on the strange star

We study the effect of a magnetic field on the strage quark matter and apply to strange star. We found that the strange star becomes more compact in presence of strong magnetic field.Comment: 10 pages (LaTex) and 3 postscript figures available on reques

Beauty is in the efficient coding of the beholder

Sexual ornaments are often assumed to be indicators of mate quality. Yet it remains poorly known how certain ornaments are chosen before any coevolutionary race makes them indicative. Perceptual biases have been proposed to play this role, but known biases are mostly restricted to a specific taxon, which precludes evaluating their general importance in sexual selection. Here we identify a potentially universal perceptual bias in mate choice. We used an algorithm that models the sparseness of the activity of simple cells in the primary visual cortex (or V1) of humans when coding images of female faces. Sparseness was found positively correlated with attractiveness as rated by men and explained up to 17% of variance in attractiveness. Because V1 is adapted to process signals from natural scenes, in general, not faces specifically, our results indicate that attractiveness for female faces is influenced by a visual bias. Sparseness and more generally efficient neural coding are ubiquitous, occurring in various animals and sensory modalities, suggesting that the influence of efficient coding on mate choice can be widespread in animals

Two photon absorption and photo-induced polymerization in partially polymerized crystals of polydiacetylene poly 4,6-dodecadiyn-1,10-diol-bis(n-butoxycarbonylmethylurethane)

We investigated the validity of noninteracting molecular chain theories for fully polymerized polydiacetylene crystals by measuring the two photon absorption spectrum of poly[4,6-dodecadiyn-1,10-diol-bis(n-butoxycarbonylmethylurethane)] chains isolated in their monomer matrix and comparing the results to those obtained previously from polydiacetylene single crystals. Data were taken over 800-940 nm using Z-scan and the measurements were found to be consistent with previously measured results in polydiacetylene single crystal poly[bis(p-toluene sulfonate) of 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol], indicating the validity of the isolated molecule theoretical approach. We also report a low photo-induced polymerization threshold

Mapping female bodily features of attractiveness

Beauty is bought by judgment of the eye (Shakespeare, Loves Labours Lost), but the bodily features governing this critical biological choice are still debated. Eye movement studies have demonstrated that males sample coarse body regions expanding from the face, the breasts and the midriff, while making female attractiveness judgements with natural vision. However, the visual system ubiquitously extracts diagnostic extra-foveal information in natural conditions, thus the visual information actually used by men is still unknown. We thus used a parametric gaze-contingent design while males rated attractiveness of female front- and back-view bodies. Males used extra-foveal information when available. Critically, when bodily features were only visible through restricted apertures, fixations strongly shifted to the hips, to potentially extract hip-width and curvature, then the breast and face. Our hierarchical mapping suggests that the visual system primary uses hip information to compute the waist-to-hip ratio and the body mass index, the crucial factors in determining sexual attractiveness and mate selection
