Through analysis of a series of interviews with political prisoners who were released during the dictatorship and continued living in the city of Durazno, there are addressed various aspects of daily life, in which the fear of being imprisoned again (in a country that had the rate of prisoners continent's highest political reasons), losing their jobs and feeling persecuted were common factor.Fil: Correa Morales, Javier; Universidad de la República. Uncertainty and social considerations for mobile assistive robot navigation

An increased interest in mobile robots has been seen over the past years. The wide range of possible applications, from vacuum cleaners to assistant robots, makes such robots an interesting solution to many everyday problems. A key requirement for the mass deployment of such robots is to ensure they can safely navigate around our daily living environments. A robot colliding with or bumping into a person may be, in some contexts, unacceptable. For example, if a robot working around elderly people collides with one of them, it may cause serious injuries. This thesis explores four major components required for effective robot navigation: sensing the static environment, detection and tracking of moving people, obstacle and people avoidance with uncertainty measurement, and basic social navigation considerations. First, to guarantee adherence to basic safety constraints, sensors and algorithms required to measure the complex structure of our daily living environments are explored. Not only do the static components of the environment have to be measured, but so do any people present. A people detection and tracking algorithm, aimed for a crowded environment is proposed, thus enhancing the robot's perception capabilities. Our daily living environments present many inherent sources of uncertainty for robots, one of them arising due to the robot's inability to know people's intentions as they move. To solve this problem, a motion model that assumes unknown long-term intentions is proposed. This is used in conjunction with a novel uncertainty aware local planner to create feasible trajectories. In social situations, the presence of groups of people cannot be neglected when navigating. To avoid the robot interrupting groups of people, it first needs to be able to detect such groups. A group detector is proposed which relies on a set of gaze- and geometric-based features. Avoiding group disruption is finally incorporated into the navigation algorithm by means of taking into account the probability of disrupting a group's activities. The effectiveness of the four different components is evaluated using real world and simulated data, demonstrating the benefits for mobile robot navigation.Open Acces

eWOM & Referrals in Social Network Services

    Get PDF
If a few decades ago the development of the Internet was instrumental in the interconnection between markets, nowadays the services provided by Web 2.0, such as social network sites (SNS) are the cutting edge. A proof of this trend is the exponential growth of social network users. The main objective of this work is to explore the mechanisms that promote the transmission and reception (WOM and referrals) of online opinions, in the context of the SNS, by buyers of travel services. The research includes some research lines: technology acceptance model (TAM), Social Identification Theory and Word-of-Mouth communication in virtual environment (eWOM). Based on these theories an explicative model has been proposed applying SEM analysis to a sample of SNS users’ of tourist service buyers. The results support the majority of the hypotheses and some relevant practical and theoretical implications have been pointed out for tourist managers

    E-Learning and gender

This study is to examine gender differences and the adoption of technology in tertial education students. We have used TAM model to measure the acceptance and use of elearning of the respondents. ANOVA and Partial Least Squares (PLS) was used, specifically, the PLS multi-group analysis, to compare differences between groups. In summary, results show that students’ behavior of acceptance of e-learning technology do not manifest statistically significant differences between women and men

This paper defines the basic judgements for the economical valoration of the environmental services presented by the ecology systems. The theme about utility is the philosofical fundamental for the valoration of the environment. It realizes a analitical forward of two studies of world environmental services. Besides, it establishes some comparations of the economical values estimated for the environmental services supplied by the great biomas of the world. It declares the theorical model and the associate problems with these sentences. In last, it draws the methodology and the results in the environmental services valoration in the Valle de Aburra

    Get PDF
The issue of profits has been interpreted from different traditions of the economic analysis, this article presents the analysis made by the industrial organization theory. The industrial organization theory is the discipline of the economics that studies how the producers organize themselves in the structures of the market; its development comes from the classical strand, in which the industry level explains the differences between profits, to the neoclassical and strategic and management proposals, which are based on the firm characteristics. The evolution of this topic is presented making reference to some articles using the VARCOMP, a procedure that allows to establish the share of some factors, called “effects”, in the total variance of a variable. This procedure was taken by the group of research on economics and business, to apply it to a sample of manufacturing companies in Colombia, during the period 1995-2000
