    Efficiency and Equity in Schools around the World

    Attention to the quality of human capital in different countries naturally leads to concerns about how school policies relate to student performance. The data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) provide a way of comparing performance in different schooling systems. The results of analyses of educational production functions within a range of developed and developing countries show general problems with the efficiency of resource usage similar to those found previously in the United States. These effects do not appear to be dictated by variations related to income level of the country or level of resources in the schools. Neither do they appear to be determined by school policies that involve compensatory application of resources. The conventional view that school resources are relatively more important in poor countries also fails to be supported.

    El amplio uso de los organofosforados, pesticidas anticolinesterásicos, ha sido responsable en ciertas ocasiones de la mortalidad y morbilidad observada en aves silvestres. Los OP son un tipo de insecticidas utilizados desde los años cuarenta, que pueden producir efectos adversos en especies no-diana. Las aves rapaces pueden intoxicarse de forma primaria o secundaria a partir de la ingesta de presas envenenadas de forma accidental o intencionada. La toxicidad de lo OP se deriva de la alteración del sistema nervioso, debido a que la fosforilación de la acetilcolinesterasa produce un síndrome colinérgico en primer lugar; sin embargo, estos compuestos también pueden producir una polineuropatía retardada. Las aves son más sensibles que otros vertebrados a los efectos tóxicos de los OP porque existen diferencias enzimáticas. El lavado de la piel y las plumas y/o el uso de carbón activado y catárticos tras la ingestión forman parte del tratamiento de apoyo. El tratamiento etiológico y sintomatológico se basan en la administración de oximas y atropina, respectivamente. Finalmente, se aborda la descripción de nuevas perspectivas terapéuticas

    Filling gaps: closing the life cycle of the endangered Mediterranean limpet Patella ferruginea Gmelin, 1791 (Gastropoda, Patellidae)

    Several reproductive issues and the larval development of the ferruginous limpet, Patella ferruginea Gmelin, 1791, an endangered species endemic from the western Mediterranean Sea, were studied to fill gaps in the knowledge of its life cycle. Average diameter of mature oocytes was 141.83 μm and mean oocyte density in the ovary was 283,800 oocytes/gram. No significant correlations were found between both oocyte diameter or density and female shell length. Female fecundity (number of oocytes per gonad) was significantly correlated with shell length and varied between 189,200 oocytes in a 40.0 mm female and 5,019,200 oocytes in an 86.4 mm female. However, there was considerable variability, in particular for largest females. Spawning induction was not achieved using usual molluscan aquaculture methods. Thus, oocytes obtained after dissection of females were used for fertilizations trials. Alkalinization treatments of seawater were used to test improvement in oocyte maturation and later fertilization rates. Treatment at pH 9 during 2 h produced the highest increase in the percentage of mature oocytes and in the fertilization rate; but these results showed high variability and were mainly significant when the initial degree of maturation was low. Sperm concentration experiments determined that best in vitro fertilization were performed at 105 and 5×105 spermatozoids/ml. The sequence and timing of the complete larval development of Patella ferruginea in laboratory conditions is described and illustrated here for the first time. At 20 °C, larvae became competent for metamorphosis 3 days after fertilization, but some crawling pediveliger larvae with a still well developed velum were found even 7 days after fertilization. Recruits 1-2 mm in length were achieved in low numbers from two of the last assays and were first detected between 131-141 days after fertilization. The resulting juveniles were monitored during two years and sex determination of five survivors at the end of this period showed that two were mature males, two mature females and one indeterminate. Our results show that the main reproductive traits or larval development of P. ferruginea hardly differ from those of other non-endangered Mediterranean or NE Atlantic limpet species. Therefore, its decline cannot be mainly attributed to some constraints of these traits as was previously suggested, but to human impact. On the other hand, it is feasible to complete the life cycle of this species in laboratory conditions, from fertilized eggs to mature individuals. However, an important part of the process like spawning induction was not achieved as gonads needed to be dissected fatally from females, although sperm could be obtained from males through non-lethal biopsies. At present, large-scale aquaculture production for reintroduction, restocking or stock enhancement purposes is neither possible nor an advisable conservation tool yet.     The oldest dairoidid crab (Decapoda, Brachyura, Parthenopoidea) from the Eocene of Spain

    Eubrachyurans, or ‘higher’ true crabs, are the most speciose group of decapod crustaceans and have a rich fossil record extending into the Early Cretaceous. However, most extant families are first found in the fossil record in the Palaeogene, and particularly in the Eocene. Unfortunately, fossils of many early eubrachyuran groups are often fragmentary, and only a few studies have combined extinct and extant taxa in a phylogenetic context using different optimality criteria. Here, we report the dairoidid crab Phrynolambrus sagittalis sp. nov., an enigmatic eubrachyuran from the upper Eocene of Huesca (northern Spain), whose completeness and exquisite preservation permit examination of its anatomy in a phylogenetic context. Dairoidids have previously been considered among the oldest stone crabs (Eriphioidea) or elbow crabs (Parthenopoidea), two disparate and distantly related groups of true crabs living today. Mechanical preparation and computed tomography of the fossil material revealed several diagnostic features that allow a detailed comparison with families across the crab tree of life, and test hypotheses about its phylogenetic affinities. Phrynolambrus sagittalis is the first record of the genus in the Iberian Peninsula, and represents one of the oldest crown parthenopoidean crabs worldwide, expanding our knowledge of the biogeographical distribution of elbow crabs during the Palaeogene, as well as their early origins, anatomical diversity and systematic affinities. Understanding the disparity of Eocene eubrachyurans is pivotal to disentangling the systematic relationships among crown families, and interpreting the spatio-temporal patterns leading to the evolution of modern faunas

    La raza bovina autóctona española Pajuna: Situación actual y programa de recuperación

    La raza bovina Pajuna es una raza autóctona andaluza que está al borde de la extinción. Su aptitud es mixta carne-trabajo y es posiblemente la raza española más rústica, al ser capaz de adaptarse a los medios marginados, aprovechando los escasos recursos de las sierras andaluzas, que no pueden ser utilizados por otras razas más carniceras. El cruzamiento indiscriminado con razas especializadas, la mecanización del campo y la pérdida del hábitat de explotación han llevado esta raza a una situación de inminente desaparición, con sólo 300 animales puros, relegados en la mayoría de los casos a meros vientres para el cruce industrial en vacadas mixtas. En el presente artículo describimos la situación actual y las causas que la han llevado a esta situación, así como las actuaciones de la Asociación de Criadores (GRAPA), creada en el año 2001, dentro de un programa de preservación y recuperación. Estas razones se pueden resumir en la localización de todos los efectivos existentes, el análisis de la estructura demográfica de la población, la actualización de su estándar racial y creación del Libro Genealógico, la caracterización genética, y determinación del nivel de variabilidad intra e interpoblacional a partir del polimorfismo de loci moleculares microsatélites como a través de la variabilidad de la región control del ADN mitocondrial.The Pajuna is a cattle breed native to Andalusia in Spain. It is an endangered breed exhibiting both meat quality and draft animal attributes. The Pajuna breed is possibly the most resilient bovine breeds in Spain. This breed is adapted to adverse conditions, taking advantage of the limited resources of the Andalusian mountains which cannot be used by other breeds. However, massive crossbreeding with other breeds, the mechanization of rural areas and the loss of its habitat have led this breed to the brink of extinction. At the moment there are 300 pure animals, most of which are females destined for industrial crossing in mixed farms. The present work is intended to describe the causes of this situation. The Association of Breeders (GRAPA), created in 2001, is working towards a program of preservation and recovery for this breed and accordingly the following steps have been taken. The existing population of Pajunas has been identified, and an analysis made of its demographic structure allowing for the establishment of a breed standard and the creation of a studbook. We have also genetically characterized this breed.     Molluscs from deep bioclastic gravel bottoms of the Alborán Island (LIFE+ INDEMARES Project)

    Resumen de posterDurante el proyecto LIFE+ INDEMARES Alborán (2011-2013), se tomaron diez muestras mediante arte de arrastre (bou de vara) en los fondos de cascajo profundo que aparecen entre 80 y 200 m en la plataforma insular de la isla de Alborán. Estos fondos están formados por restos calcáreos biógenos (bioclastos). En las muestras se han encontrado un total de 2.713 ejemplares vivos de moluscos pertenecientes a 147 especies (2 solenogastros, 2 poliplacóforos, 97 gasterópodos, 45 bivalvos, 1 cefalópodo). Los muestreos realizados han puesto de manifiesto la presencia de una alta riqueza de especies de invertebrados. En el caso de los moluscos, la riqueza específica de las muestras fue alta (entre 24 y 55 especies), mientras que las abundancias fueron entre moderadas y altas (entre 154 y 846 individuos), oscilando la diversidad de Shannon-Wiener (H’) entre 2,20 y 3,30. En las muestras estudiadas destaca la presencia de pocas especies comunes y de un elevado número de especies raras. Estas últimas pueden ser accidentales en estos fondos y comunes en otros hábitats próximos, pero otras, como Rugulina monterosatoi Aartsen y Bogi, 1987, Epitonium linctum (de Boury y Monterosato, 1890), Epitonium pseudonanum Bouchet y Warén, 1986, Strobiligera flammulata Bouchet y Warén, 1993, Cerithiopsis atalaya Watson, 1885, Cerithiopsis nofronii Amati, 1987 y Pseudobabylonella minima (Reeve, 1856), se consideran raras ya que no son frecuentes en ningún otro hábitat. La mayoría de las especies de moluscos encontradas en los fondos de cascajo de la isla de Alborán tienen una distribución atlántico-mediterránea, y están presentes normalmente en el Mediterráneo y en el Atlántico ibero-marroquí o más allá de esta zona. Se han encontrado dos especies de afinidad biogeográfica subtropical (costa occidental africana), cuya presencia es uno de los rasgos característicos del mar de Alborán: Mitrella pallaryi (Dautzenberg, 1891) y Nassarius denticulatus (A. Adams, 1852). Además, se ha recolectado viva una especie de reciente descripción, Trophonopsis alboranensis (Smriglio, Mariottini y Bonfitto, 1997), probablemente endémica de esta zona al no haberse encontrado fuera de la isla de Alborán. Los gasterópodos Anatoma aspera (Philippi, 1844), Xenophora crispa (König, 1825), Schilderia achatidea (Gray en G. B. Sowerby I, 1837), Trophonopsis alboranensis y Fusiturris similis (Bivona Ant. en Bivona And., 1838), así como los bivalvos Bathyarca pectunculoides (Scacchi, 1834), Similipecten similis (Laskey, 1811) y Parvamussium fenestratum (Forbes, 1844), entre otras especies, caracterizan el cascajo profundo en la plataforma de Alborán, y lo diferencian de los fondos coralígenos o de “maërl” adyacentes. Por su elevada diversidad y por ser un hábitat esencial para varias especies vulnerables (no sólo de moluscos), consideramos que los fondos de cascajo profundo deben ser incluidos en el Anexo I (Hábitats naturales de interés comunitario cuya conservación requiere la designación de zonas de especial conservación) de la Directiva 92/43/CEE de Hábitats, para lo cual se ha elaborado la correspondiente propuesta en el marco del proyecto LIFE+ INDEMARES.Universidad de Málaga.     New brachyuran crabs from the Aptian–Albian Romualdo Formation, Santana Group of Brazil: Evidence for a Tethyan connection to the Araripe Basin

    Despite the exceptional palaeontological richness of the renowned Santana Group from the Early Cretaceous Araripe Basin of Brazil, only one specimen of true crabs (Brachyura) has been discovered to date. Here we present two new genera and species of brachyuran crabs from the upper Aptian–lower Albian Romualdo Formation of the Santana Group, represented by 30 specimens from several localities across the Araripe Basin in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. One taxon, Exucarcinus gonzagai Prado and Luque gen. et sp. nov., is similar to several endemic stem raninoidans (Orithopsidae) from the late Aptian and early Albian of Colombia and the USA, respectively, while Romualdocarcinus salesi Prado and Luque gen. et sp. nov., seems to be closer to “higher” true crabs (Eubrachyura) from the Cenomanian of Spain. The presence of taxa similar to those from the mid-Cretaceous of northern South America, southern North America, and western Europe, reinforces the view of a Tethyan marine influence in Araripe during the breakup of South America and Africa, and adds to the growing data that suggest a generic and specific degree of endemism of true crabs in tropical South America during the mid-Cretaceous

    Trans-oligomerization of duplicated aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases maintains genetic code fidelity under stress

    Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) play a key role in deciphering the genetic message by producing charged tRNAs and are equipped with proofreading mechanisms to ensure correct pairing of tRNAs with their cognate amino acid. Duplicated aaRSs are very frequent in Nature, with 25,913 cases observed in 26,837 genomes. The oligomeric nature of many aaRSs raises the question of how the functioning and oligomerization of duplicated enzymes is organized. We characterized this issue in a model prokaryotic organism that expresses two different threonyl-tRNA synthetases, responsible for Thr-tRNAThr synthesis: one accurate and constitutively expressed (T1) and another (T2) with impaired proofreading activity that also generates mischarged Ser-tRNAThr. Low zinc promotes dissociation of dimeric T1 into monomers deprived of aminoacylation activity and simultaneous induction of T2, which is active for aminoacylation under low zinc. T2 either forms homodimers or heterodimerizes with T1 subunits that provide essential proofreading activity in trans. These findings evidence that in organisms with duplicated genes, cells can orchestrate the assemblage of aaRSs oligomers that meet the necessities of the cell in each situation. We propose that controlled oligomerization of duplicated aaRSs is an adaptive mechanism that can potentially be expanded to the plethora of organisms with duplicated oligomeric aaRSs.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad BFU2010–19544, BFU2013–44686-

    Room temperature photo-response of titanium supersaturated silicon at energies over the bandgap

    Silicon samples were implanted with high Ti doses and subsequently processed with the pulsed-laser melting technique. The electronic transport properties in the 15–300 K range and the room temperature spectral photoresponse at energies over the bandgap were measured. Samples with Ti concentration below the insulator-metal (I-M) transition limit showed a progressive reduction of the carrier lifetime in the implanted layer as Ti dose is increased. However, when the Ti concentration exceeded this limit, an extraordinary recovery of the photoresponse was measured. This result supports the theory of intermediate band materials and is of utmost relevance for photovoltaic cells and Si-based detectors
