Corporate Brand Communication in the New Era of Social Media : Opportunities and Challenges in Exploiting Social Media Influencers in the Corporate Brand Communication of a Company
The purpose of this thesis is to examine and critically analyze the opportunities and challenges in exploiting social media influencers in the corporate brand communication of a company. Due to the aim of this research, the study focuses on examining the phenomenon particularly from a corporate perspective. Previously, the academic research has explored to some extent the use of social media influencers in brand and product marketing, but there is a distinct need for more understanding of its use. In addition, very little research has been done on the opportunities and challenges of corporate brand communication through social media influencers, which is why this study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the phenomena.
Qualitative research was selected as the methodological approach, as it best supports the purpose of the study. The research was conducted through semi-structured interviews, as they can be considered particularly suitable for qualitative research, and they can be utilized when collecting a comprehensive and in-depth research material. The target group of the study consisted of eight Finnish corporations, that actively use social media influencers as part of their corporate brand communications. Consequently, the research data was collected from 13 semi-structured interviews, where one to three representatives of the companies relevant to the research topic were interviewed.
The results of the study show that many of the perceived opportunities of corporate brand communication through social media influencers were essentially related to the humanity, personality, and accessibility that the influencers were able bring to the corporate brand communication of the company. Furthermore, corporate brand communication through social media influencers provided companies with an opportunity to concretize and humanize their brand identity to consumers through an approachable and credible character, to support their consumer segmentation, to increase the visibility and brand awareness of their company on social media, and to gain new perspective to their storytelling. On the other hand, the research found that one of the key challenges in corporate brad communication through social media influencers was perceived to be the human aspect and a certain unpredictability of influencers on social media. In addition, as today influencers are doing various paid collaborations with several different companies simultaneously, standing out from the crowd was perceived to be challenging at times. As in many previous studies, measuring the impact of the social media influencer collaborations was still considered as one of the greatest challenges for the companies. The results also revealed that the size of an influencer was often seen to affect the potential opportunities, challenges, as well as the manageability of the influencer collaboration.TÀmÀn tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella ja analysoida kriittisesti mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita, joita liittyy sosiaalisen median vaikuttajien hyödyntÀmiseen yrityksen yritysbrÀndiviestinnÀssÀ. Tutkimuksen tavoitteesta johtuen tÀmÀ tutkimus keskittyy tarkastelemaan ilmiötÀ erityisesti yrityksen nÀkökulmasta. Aiempi akateeminen tutkimus on tutkinut jossain mÀÀrin sosiaalisen median vaikuttajien hyödyntÀmistÀ yritysten brÀndi- ja tuotemarkkinoinnissa, mutta sen hyödyntÀmisen mahdollisuuksista tarvitaan lisÀÀ tutkimusta. LisÀksi sosiaalisen median vaikuttajien kautta tapahtuvan yritysbrÀndiviestinnÀn mahdollisuuksista ja haasteista on tehty hyvin vÀhÀn tutkimusta, minkÀ vuoksi tÀmÀ tutkimus pyrkii luomaan syvempÀÀ ymmÀrrystÀ ilmiöstÀ.
Tutkimus suoritettiin laadullisin menetelmin, sillÀ ne tukevat parhaiten tutkimuksen tarkoitusta. Tutkimusaineiston keruu toteutettiin puolestaan puolistrukturoitujen haastattelujen avulla, sillÀ ne sopivat erityisen hyvin laadulliseen tutkimukseen, ja niitÀ voidaan hyödyntÀÀ kattavan ja syvÀllisen tutkimusaineiston kerÀÀmisessÀ. Tutkimuksen kohderyhmÀ koostui kahdeksasta suomalaisesta yrityksestÀ, jotka kÀyttÀvÀt aktiivisesti sosiaalisen median vaikuttajia osana heidÀn yritysbrÀndiviestintÀÀ. Tutkimusaineisto kerÀttiin 13 teemahaastattelulla, joissa haastateltiin yhdestÀ kolmeen tutkimusaiheen kannalta relevanttia yrityksen edustajaa.
Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, ettÀ monet sosiaalisen median vaikuttajien kautta tapahtuvan yritysbrÀndiviestinnÀn koetuista mahdollisuuksista liittyivÀt keskeisesti inhimillisyyteen, persoonallisuuteen ja helposti lÀhestyttÀvyyteen, jota vaikuttajat pystyivÀt tuomaan yrityksen yritysbrÀndiviestintÀÀn. LisÀksi yritysbrÀndiviestintÀ sosiaalisen median vaikuttajien kautta tarjosi yrityksille mahdollisuuden konkretisoida ja inhimillistÀÀ heidÀn brÀndi-identiteettiÀÀn kuluttajille helposti lÀhestyttÀvÀn ja uskottavan hahmon kautta, tukea kuluttajien segmentointia, lisÀtÀ yrityksen nÀkyvyyttÀ ja brÀnditietoisuutta sosiaalisessa mediassa, sekÀ saada uusia nÀkökulmia yrityksen tarinankerrontaan. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, ettÀ yksi keskeinen haaste yritysbrÀndiviestinnÀssÀ sosiaalisen median vaikuttajien kautta koettiin kuitenkin olevan vaikuttajien inhimillisyys ja tietty arvaamattomuus sosiaalisessa mediassa.
Visual Methodologies : Theorizing Disasters and International Relations
There is an increase in extreme weather conditions due to human-induced climate change. Their impacts are most severely felt by the marginalized and the poor in the Global South. Increasingly, study of international relations focuses on the varied forms of disasters and the global politics that emerge around them. Disaster studies scholarship actively challenges the myth of existence of ânatural disasters.â Instead of defining them as being ânatural,â disasters are conceived as serious disruptions to the functioning of a community or a society with human, material, economic, or environmental losses. The disaster concept is thus separated, first, from hazards such as earthquakes, cyclones, and floods, and âdisatersâ are not limited to events resulting from natural hazards. Disasters emerge also as a result of major economic and political instabilities due to the nature of the contemporary global political economy and global financial crises. Disasters also include those that often go unnoticed such as violent conflicts or famines, and also include global pandemics such as Ebola and COVID-19. Disasters understood in this way also include aftermaths of resource extractivism and settler coloniality. The intersection of disasters and visual methodologies offers insights into theorizing International Relations nature, the everyday, and the politics of disasters. This article focuses on such visual and audiovisual scholarship that has predominantly emerged from, and actively engages with, collaborative visual methodologies and a rethinking of research processes. Such works offer insights into critical exploration of academic knowledge production processes and praxis, suggesting that visual is not a method, but a methodological and ethical choice. Research processes adopting photo-elicitation, graphic novels and comics, and films in specific disaster contexts challenge text-dominated scholarship and offer reflection on the roles between the researcher and researched, and on the question of authorship. Turning to visuals also brings to the fore questions of representations and the strategic use of the visual in the overall scholarly storytelling practice. Further, scholars have suggested that instead of focusing on the visual devices, or the visual products, visual methodologies as a process orientation allow questions related to democratizing and accessibility to the research process to be addressed, weighing up whose priorities matter, that is, making research useful for (Indigenous) communities and resisting legacies of the imperial shutter.Peer reviewe
Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh
Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh examines the rebuilding of the city of Banda Aceh in Indonesia in the aftermath of the celebrated Helsinki-based peace mediation process, thirty years of armed conflict, and the tsunami. Offering a critical contribution to the study of post-conflict politics, the book includes 14 documentary videos reflecting individualsâ experiences on rebuilding the city and following the everyday lives of people in Banda Aceh. Marjaana Jauhola mirrors the peace-making process from the perspective of the âoutcastâ and invisible, challenging the selective narrative and ideals of the peace as a success story. Jauhola provides alternative ways to reflect the peace dialogue using ethnographic and film documentarist storytelling. Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh tells a story of layered exiles and displacement, revealing hidden narratives of violence and grief while exposing struggles over gendered expectations of being good and respectable women and men. It brings to light the multiple ways of arranging lives and forming caring relationships outside the normative notions of nuclear family and home, and offers insights into the relations of power and violence that are embedded in the peace
Journeys in Aidland : An Autobiographic Exploration of Resistance to Development Aid
The article is inspired by autobiographical and auto-ethnographic approaches to studying international relations, development and humanitarian aid.1 It consists of a collage of the authorsâ personal experiences in two post-disaster contexts, respectively in Aceh, Indonesia and Haiti, and presents a dialogue between two autobiographical stories that reveal the shared experiences and emotional labour of the humanitarian aid practice. Addressing questions such as âWhat does it mean to feel like an outsider?â; âOutsider to what?â; âIs being an outsider a failure or a strategy of resistance?â This article circulates around the themes of mobility, temporality, intersections of class, gender and âwhitenessâ, and how they are embedded within the materiality and spatiality of humanitarian aid. Feelings of separation and discomfort point towards an opening for critical discussion on the ways in which these practices are both maintained and resisted. Although considered as an important vehicle for the care of the self, the authors struggle to offer any easy solutions, recognising their privilege of confession, and the risk of becoming trapped in the familiar circulation of truths of the Global North.Peer reviewe

Asiakkaiden kokemuksia osallistavasta dokumentoinnista perhetyössÀ
TÀssÀ pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkitaan asiakkaiden kokemuksia osallistavasta dokumentoinnista perhetyössÀ. Tutkielma on laadullinen tutkimus, jonka teoreettisen viitekehyksen rakentavat mÀÀrittelyt sosiaalityön dokumentoinnista ja osallisuudesta. Tutkielman konteksti muodostuu perhetyöstÀ, joka on yksi sosiaalihuollon palvelumuoto. Tutkielman aineisto kerÀttiin erÀÀn perhetyötÀ tarjoavan yrityksen asiakasvanhempien haastatteluista. AineistonkeruumenetelmÀnÀ toimi teemahaastattelu ja haastatteluihin osallistui seitsemÀn perhetyön asiakasvanhempaa. Aineiston analyysimetodina kÀytettiin teemoittelua.
TÀmÀn tutkielman keskeinen johtopÀÀtös on, ettÀ asiakasta osallistava dokumentointitapa lisÀÀ työn avoimuutta, parantaa asiakkaan ja työntekijÀn vÀlistÀ suhdetta sekÀ lisÀÀ asiakkaan luottamusta työntekijÀÀn. TÀmÀn lisÀksi osallistavaa dokumentointitapaa voidaan kÀyttÀÀ työvÀlineenÀ asiakastyössÀ.
Tutkielma paikantuu perhetyöhön, joten tulokset eivÀt ole suoraan sovellettavissa sosiaalityöhön. Tutkielman aineisto on kerÀtty yhden perhetyötÀ tuottavan yrityksen asiakkailta, joten tulokset eivÀt anna kattavaa kuvaa yleisesti perhetyön asiakkaiden kÀsityksestÀ liittyen osallistavaan dokumentointiin
