A spatio-temporal, Gaussian Process Regression, real-estate price predictor

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a novel four-stage methodology for real-estate valuation. This research shows that space, property, economic, neighbourhood and time features are all contributing factors in producing a house price predictor in which validation shows a 96.6% accuracy on Gaussian Process Regression beating regression-kriging, random forests and an M5P-decision-tree. The output is integrated into a commercial real estate decision engine

    Symmetric Instantons and Skyrme Fields

    Get PDF
By explicit construction of the ADHM data, we prove the existence of a charge seven instanton with icosahedral symmetry. By computing the holonomy of this instanton we obtain a Skyrme field which approximates the minimal energy charge seven Skyrmion. We also present a one parameter family of tetrahedrally symmetric instantons whose holonomy gives a family of Skyrme fields which models a Skyrmion scattering process, where seven well-separated Skyrmions collide to form the icosahedrally symmetric Skyrmion.Comment: 22 pages plus 1 figure in GIF forma

An indoor test methodology for solar-powered wireless sensor networks

    Get PDF
Repeatable and accurate tests are important when designing hardware and algorithms for solar-powered wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Since no two days are exactly alike with regard to energy harvesting, tests must be carried out indoors. Solar simulators are traditionally used in replicating the effects of sunlight indoors - however, solar simulators are expensive, have lighting elements that have short lifetimes, and are usually not designed to carry out the types of tests that hardware and algorithm designers require. As a result, hardware and algorithm designers use tests that are inaccurate and not repeatable (both for others and also for the designers themselves). In this article we propose an indoor test methodology which does not rely on solar simulators. The test methodology has its basis in astronomy and photovoltaic (PV) cell design. We present a generic design for a test apparatus which can be used in carrying out the test methodology. We also present a specific design which we use in implementing an actual test apparatus. We test the efficacy of our test apparatus and, to demonstrate the usefulness of the test methodology, perform experiments akin to those required in projects involving solar-powered WSNs. Results of the said tests and experiments demonstrate that the test methodology is an invaluable tool for hardware and algorithm designers working with solar-powered WSNs

Embryopathic Effects of Waterborne and Sediment-Accumulated Cadmium, Mercury and Zinc on Reproduction and Survival of Fish and Amphibian Populations in Kentucky

Fish and amphibian egg cultures were used to determine the embryopathic effects of cadmium, mercury, and zinc released from natural and metal-enriched sediments, and to develop egg culture bioassay procedures suitable for monitoring bottom sediments for hazardous contaminants. Eggs of the narrow-mouthed toad (Gastrophryne carolinensis), goldfish (Carassius auratus), and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnei) were cultured in contaminant-free water added to natural and metal-enriched sediments. Exposure was initiated after fertilization (toad, goldfish) or at 10 days prehatching (trout) and maintained continuously through 4-10 days posthatching. Sediments were enriched with 0.1-100 ppm cadmium and mercury and 1.0-1000 ppm zinc. Natural control sediments contained average concentrations of 0.052 ppm mercury, 1.0 ppm cadmium, and 108.2 ppm zinc. Substantial frequencies of mortality and teratogenesis occurred for all 3 animal species when eggs were cultured over natural elements further enriched with as little as 0.1-1.0 ppm cadmium or mercury and 1-10ppm zinc. Survival of trout embryos and alevins closely paralleled sediment test concentrations. The sediment TL50 concentrations for trout stages cultured from 10 days prehatching through 10 days posthatching were approximately 1ppm for mercury, 2.15 ppm for cadmium, and 210.6 ppm for zinc. Sediment metals were substantially more lethal to eggs and embryos than to free-living larvae or fry

Road distance and travel time for an improved house price Kriging predictor

The paper designs an automated valuation model to predict the price of residential property in Coventry, United Kingdom, and achieves this by means of geostatistical Kriging, a popularly employed distance-based learning method. Unlike traditional applications of distance-based learning, this papers implements non-Euclidean distance metrics by approximating road distance, travel time and a linear combination of both, which this paper hypothesizes to be more related to house prices than straight-line (Euclidean) distance. Given that – to undertake Kriging – a valid variogram must be produced, this paper exploits the conforming properties of the Minkowski distance function to approximate a road distance and travel time metric. A least squares approach is put forth for variogram parameter selection and an ordinary Kriging predictor is implemented for interpolation. The predictor is then validated with 10-fold cross-validation and a spatially aware checkerboard hold out method against the almost exclusively employed, Euclidean metric. Given a comparison of results for each distance metric, this paper witnesses a goodness of fit (r²) result of 0.6901 ± 0.18 SD for real estate price prediction compared to the traditional (Euclidean) approach obtaining a suboptimal r² value of 0.66 ± 0.21 SD
