On finite-temperature holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit
Holographic models in the T=0 universality class of QCD in the limit of large
number N_c of colors and N_f massless fermion flavors, but constant ratio
x_f=N_f/N_c, are analyzed at finite temperature. The models contain a
5-dimensional metric and two scalars, a dilaton sourcing TrF^2 and a tachyon
dual to \bar qq. The phase structure on the T,x_f plane is computed and various
1st order, 2nd order transitions and crossovers with their chiral symmetry
properties are identified. For each x_f, the temperature dependence of p/T^4
and the quark-antiquark -condensate is computed. In the simplest case, we find
that for x_f up to the critical x_c\sim 4 there is a 1st order transition on
which chiral symmetry is broken and the energy density jumps. In the conformal
window x_c<x_f<11/2, there is only a continuous crossover between two conformal
phases. When approaching x_c from below, x_f\to x_c, temperature scales
approach zero as specified by Miransky scaling.Comment: 66 pages, 29 figure
Stellar activity as noise in exoplanet detection I. Methods and application to solar-like stars and activity cycles
The detection of exoplanets using any method is prone to confusion due to the
intrinsic variability of the host star. We investigate the effect of cool
starspots on the detectability of the exoplanets around solar-like stars using
the radial velocity method. For investigating this activity-caused "jitter" we
calculate synthetic spectra using radiative transfer, known stellar atomic and
molecular lines, different surface spot configurations, and an added planetary
signal. Here, the methods are described in detail, tested and compared to
previously published studies. The methods are also applied to investigate the
activity jitter in old and young solar-like stars, and over a solar-like
activity cycles. We find that the mean full jitter amplitude obtained from the
spot surfaces mimicking the solar activity varies during the cycle
approximately between 1 m/s and 9 m/s. With a realistic observing frequency a
Neptune mass planet on a one year orbit can be reliably recovered. On the other
hand, the recovery of an Earth mass planet on a similar orbit is not feasible
with high significance. The methods developed in this study have a great
potential for doing statistical studies of planet detectability, and also for
investigating the effect of stellar activity on recovered planetary parameters.Comment: Accepted to MNRA
Matrix representations, linear transformations, and kernels for disambiguation in natural language
In the application of machine learning methods with natural language inputs, the words and their positions in the input text are some of the most important features. In this article, we introduce a framework based on a word-position matrix representation of text, linear feature transformations of the word-position matrices, and kernel functions constructed from the transformations. We consider two categories of transformations, one based on word similarities and the second on their positions, which can be applied simultaneously in the framework in an elegant way. We show how word and positional similarities obtained by applying previously proposed techniques, such as latent semantic analysis, can be incorporated as transformations in the framework. We also introduce novel ways to determine word and positional similarities. We further present efficient algorithms for computing kernel functions incorporating the transformations on the word-position matrices, and, more importantly, introduce a highly efficient method for prediction. The framework is particularly suitable to natural language disambiguation tasks where the aim is to select for a single word a particular property from a set of candidates based on the context of the word. We demonstrate the applicability of the framework to this type of tasks using context-sensitive spelling error correction on the Reuters News corpus as a model problem
An efficient algorithm for learning to rank from preference graphs
In this paper, we introduce a framework for regularized least-squares (RLS) type of ranking cost functions and we propose three such cost functions. Further, we propose a kernel-based preference learning algorithm, which we call RankRLS, for minimizing these functions. It is shown that RankRLS has many computational advantages compared to the ranking algorithms that are based on minimizing other types of costs, such as the hinge cost. In particular, we present efficient algorithms for training, parameter selection, multiple output learning, cross-validation, and large-scale learning. Circumstances under which these computational benefits make RankRLS preferable to RankSVM are considered. We evaluate RankRLS on four different types of ranking tasks using RankSVM and the standard RLS regression as the baselines. RankRLS outperforms the standard RLS regression and its performance is very similar to that of RankSVM, while RankRLS has several computational benefits over RankSVM
Clinical findings in relation to mortality in non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections : patients with Mycobacterium avium complex have better survival than patients with other mycobacteria
We compared the clinical findings and survival in patients with Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and other non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). A total of 167 adult non-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients with at least one positive culture for NTM were included. Medical records were reviewed. The patients were categorised according to the 2007 American Thoracic Society (ATS) criteria. MAC comprised 59 % of all NTM findings. MAC patients were more often female (70 % vs. 34 %, p <0.001) and had less fatal underlying diseases (23 % vs. 47 %, p = 0.001) as compared to other NTM patients. Symptoms compatible with NTM infection had lasted for less than a year in 34 % of MAC patients but in 54 % of other NTM patients (p = 0.037). Pulmonary MAC patients had a significantly lower risk of death compared to pulmonary other NTM (hazard ratio [HR] 0.50, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 0.33-0.77, p = 0.002) or subgroup of other slowly growing NTM (HR 0.55, 95 % CI 0.31-0.99, p = 0.048) or as rapidly growing NTM (HR 0.47, 95 % CI 0.25-0.87, p = 0.02). The median survival time was 13.0 years (95 % CI 5.9-20.1) for pulmonary MAC but 4.6 years (95 % CI 3.4-5.9) for pulmonary other NTM. Serious underlying diseases (HR 3.21, 95 % CI 2.05-5.01, p <0.001) and age (HR 1.07, 95 % CI 1.04-1.09, p <0.001) were the significant predictors of mortality and female sex was a predictor of survival (HR 0.38, 95 % CI 0.24-0.59, p <0.001) in the multivariate analysis. Pulmonary MAC patients had better prognosis than pulmonary other NTM patients. The symptom onset suggests a fairly rapid disease course.Peer reviewe
Treatment of keloid scars with intralesional triamcinolone and 5-fluorouracil injections - a randomized controlled trial
Keloids have high recurrence rates. Current first-line therapy is triamcinolone (TAC) injection, but it has been suggested that approximately 50% of keloids are steroid resistant. We compared the efficacy of intralesional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and triamcinalone injections in a double-blind randomized controlled trial. Forty-three patients with 50 keloid scars were treated with either intralesional TAC or 5-FU-injections over 6 months. There was no statistically significant difference in the remission rate at 6 months between the 5-FU and TAC groups (46% vs 60%, respectively). Local adverse effects were higher in the TAC group compared to the 5-FU group. Occurrence of skin atrophy in TAC group was 44% and in the 5-FU group 8% (p <0.05). Also the occurrence of telangiectasia in the TAC group was 50% and in the 5-FU 21% (p <0.05). Vascularity of the keloids, assessed by spectral imaging and immunohistochemical staining for blood vessels, after treatment decreased in the TAC group, but not in the 5-FU group (p <0.05). Fibroblast proliferation evaluated by Ki-67 staining significantly decreased in the TAC group (p <0.05) but increased in the 5-FU group (p <0.05). TAC and 5-FU injections did not differ in their clinical effectivity in this randomized study, but 5-FU injections lead to increased proliferation rate and did not affect vascular density in histological assessment. Due to the greater number of adverse effects observed after TAC treatment, 5-FU injections may be preferable for cosmetically sensitive skin areas. Extreme Technicolor & The Walking Critical Temperature
We map the phase diagram of gauge theories of fundamental interactions in the
flavor-temperature plane using chiral perturbation theory to estimate the
relation between the pion decaying constant and the critical temperature above
which chiral symmetry is restored. We then investigate the impact of our
results on models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and therefore on
the electroweak early universe phase transition.Comment: RevTeX, 18 pages, 3 figure
