    Radiation hardness of small-pitch 3D pixel sensors up to HL-LHC fluences

    A new generation of 3D silicon pixel detectors with a small pixel size of 50×\times50 and 25×\times100 μ\mum2^{2} is being developed for the HL-LHC tracker upgrades. The radiation hardness of such detectors was studied in beam tests after irradiation to HL-LHC fluences up to 1.4×10161.4\times10^{16} neq_{\mathrm{eq}}/cm2^2. At this fluence, an operation voltage of only 100 V is needed to achieve 97% hit efficiency, with a power dissipation of 13 mW/cm2^2 at -25^{\circ}C, considerably lower than for previous 3D sensor generations and planar sensors.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of TIPP 2017, Beijing (International Conference on The Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics 2017

    Far-Infrared and Sub-Millimeter Observations and Physical Models of the Reflection Nebula Ced 201

    ISO [C II] 158 micron, [O I] 63 micron, and H_2 9 and 17 micron observations are presented of the reflection nebula Ced 201, which is a photon-dominated region illuminated by a B9.5 star with a color temperature of 10,000 K (a cool PDR). In combination with ground based [C I] 609 micron, CO, 13CO, CS and HCO+ data, the carbon budget and physical structure of the reflection nebula are constrained. The obtained data set is the first one to contain all important cooling lines of a cool PDR, and allows a comparison to be made with classical PDRs. To this effect one- and three-dimensional PDR models are presented which incorporate the physical characteristics of the source, and are aimed at understanding the dominant heating processes of the cloud. The contribution of very small grains to the photo-electric heating rate is estimated from these models and used to constrain the total abundance of PAHs and small grains. Observations of the pure rotational H_2 lines with ISO, in particular the S(3) line, indicate the presence of a small amount of very warm, approximately 330 K, molecular gas.     On the expressive power of read-once determinants

    We introduce and study the notion of read-kk projections of the determinant: a polynomial fF[x1,,xn]f \in \mathbb{F}[x_1, \ldots, x_n] is called a {\it read-kk projection of determinant} if f=det(M)f=det(M), where entries of matrix MM are either field elements or variables such that each variable appears at most kk times in MM. A monomial set SS is said to be expressible as read-kk projection of determinant if there is a read-kk projection of determinant ff such that the monomial set of ff is equal to SS. We obtain basic results relating read-kk determinantal projections to the well-studied notion of determinantal complexity. We show that for sufficiently large nn, the n×nn \times n permanent polynomial PermnPerm_n and the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree dd on nn variables SndS_n^d for 2dn22 \leq d \leq n-2 are not expressible as read-once projection of determinant, whereas mon(Permn)mon(Perm_n) and mon(Snd)mon(S_n^d) are expressible as read-once projections of determinant.     Emission-Line Galaxies from the HST PEARS Grism Survey I: The South Fields

    We present results of a search for emission-line galaxies in the Southern Fields of the Hubble Space Telescope PEARS (Probing Evolution And Reionization Spectroscopically) grism survey. The PEARS South Fields consist of five ACS pointings (including the Hubble Ultra Deep Field) with the G800L grism for a total of 120 orbits, revealing thousands of faint object spectra in the GOODS-South region of the sky. Emission-line galaxies (ELGs) are one subset of objects that are prevalent among the grism spectra. Using a 2-dimensional detection and extraction procedure, we find 320 emission lines orginating from 226 galaxy "knots'' within 192 individual galaxies. Line identification results in 118 new grism-spectroscopic redshifts for galaxies in the GOODS-South Field. We measure emission line fluxes using standard Gaussian fitting techniques. At the resolution of the grism data, the H-beta and [OIII] doublet are blended. However, by fitting two Gaussian components to the H-beta and [OIII] features, we find that many of the PEARS ELGs have high [OIII]/H-beta ratios compared to other galaxy samples of comparable luminosities. The star-formation rates (SFRs) of the ELGs are presented, as well as a sample of distinct giant star-forming regions at z~0.1-0.5 across individual galaxies. We find that the radial distances of these HII regions in general reside near the galaxies' optical continuum half-light radii, similar to those of giant HII regions in local galaxies.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures; Accepted for publication in A

    Control of rheumatoid arthritis with conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs in a tertiary hospital in central South Africa

    Background. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a highly prevalent disease with a significant impact on morbidity and life expectancy. There is a paucity of literature relating to the current state of disease control in South Africa, and none on Free State Province.Objectives. To evaluate control of RA with conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) in the rheumatology outpatient department of Universitas Academic Hospital, Bloemfontein, and to determine the relative impact of various factors contributing to the prevention of disease control.Methods. A cross-sectional study was undertaken over a period of 8 months from December 2016 to August 2017 in the rheumatology outpatient department of Universitas Academic Hospital. Data were collected by means of information sheets and questionnaires completed by attending doctors. The information pertained to disease activity, possible factors contributing to poor control, and relevant demographic data.Results. Information was collected from 169 patients, and data analysis was performed on 161. The results revealed that RA was controlled in 34 patients (21.1%). Of the 127 patients with uncontrolled disease, 61 (48.0%) reported dispensing issues relating to poor drug availability. Seventy-two (56.7%) of the patients with uncontrolled disease were deemed to be on insufficient treatment for their disease state, of whom 33 (45.8%) also reported concomitant dispensing issues. Other factors such as transport/access problems, administrative issues, adverse events and poor compliance/insight contributed to the inadequate control of RA to a minor extent. In terms of monthly dispensing, 159 patients (98.8%) reported receiving all their DMARDs during the first month. The vast majority of these drugs were dispensed from Universitas Hospital. This figure decreased to 119 patients (73.9%) who received all their DMARDs during the second month, mostly from district units. Only 55.3% (n=89) of the patients reported receiving all of their DMARDs from their down-referral units.Conclusions. Control of RA at this institution is suboptimal compared with national and international standards. The main contributors to poor control appear to be problems relating to dispensing of medication and inadequate escalation of therapy by doctors. Most of the concern with the dispensing of medication lies with the poor availability of DMARDs in peripheral unit pharmacies. These factors are remediable and should be attended to

    Direct simulation of ion beam induced stressing and amorphization of silicon

    Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, we investigate the mechanical response of silicon to high dose ion-irradiation. We employ a realistic and efficient model to directly simulate ion beam induced amorphization. Structural properties of the amorphized sample are compared with experimental data and results of other simulation studies. We find the behavior of the irradiated material is related to the rate at which it can relax. Depending upon the ability to deform, we observe either the generation of a high compressive stress and subsequent expansion of the material, or generation of tensile stress and densification. We note that statistical material properties, such as radial distribution functions are not sufficient to differentiate between different densities of amorphous samples. For any reasonable deformation rate, we observe an expansion of the target upon amorphization in agreement with experimental observations. This is in contrast to simulations of quenching which usually result in denser structures relative to crystalline Si. We conclude that although there is substantial agreement between experimental measurements and most simulation results, the amorphous structures being investigated may have fundamental differences; the difference in density can be attributed to local defects within the amorphous network. Finally we show that annealing simulations of our amorphized samples can lead to a reduction of high energy local defects without a large scale rearrangement of the amorphous network. This supports the proposal that defects in amorphous silicon are analogous to those in crystalline silicon.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure

    The genomic basis of rapid adaptation to antibiotic combination therapy in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    Combination therapy is a common antibiotic treatment strategy that aims at minimizing the risk of resistance evolution in several infectious diseases. Nonetheless, evidence supporting its efficacy against the nosocomial opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains elusive. Identification of the possible evolutionary paths to resistance in multidrug environments can help to explain treatment outcome. For this purpose, we here performed whole-genome sequencing of 127 previously evolved populations of P. aeruginosa adapted to sublethal doses of distinct antibiotic combinations and corresponding single-drug treatments, and experimentally characterized several of the identified variants. We found that alterations in the regulation of efflux pumps are the most favored mechanism of resistance, regardless of the environment. Unexpectedly, we repeatedly identified intergenic variants in the adapted populations, often with no additional mutations and usually associated with genes involved in efflux pump expression, possibly indicating a regulatory function of the intergenic regions. The experimental analysis of these variants demonstrated that the intergenic changes caused similar increases in resistance against single and multidrug treatments as those seen for efflux regulatory gene mutants. Surprisingly, we could find no substantial fitness costs for a majority of these variants, most likely enhancing their competitiveness toward sensitive cells, even in antibiotic-free environments. We conclude that the regulation of efflux is a central target of antibiotic-mediated selection in P. aeruginosa and that, importantly, changes in intergenic regions may represent a usually neglected alternative process underlying bacterial resistance evolution, which clearly deserves further attention in the future

    What guidance are researchers given on how to present network meta-analyses to end-users such as policymakers and clinicians? A systematic review

Consideration should be given to identifying optimal approaches to presenting NMAs that help clarify analyses. It is unclear what guidance researchers currently have on how to present and tailor NMAs to different end-users. Methods: A systematic review of NMA guidelines was conducted to identify guidance on how to present NMAs. Electronic databases and supplementary sources were searched for NMA guidelines. Presentation format details related to sample formats, target audiences, data sources, analysis methods and results were extracted and frequencies tabulated. Guideline quality was assessed following criteria developed for clinical practice guidelines. Results: Seven guidelines were included. Current guidelines focus on how to conduct NMAs but provide limited guidance to researchers on how to best present analyses to different end-users. None of the guidelines provided reporting templates. Few guidelines provided advice on tailoring presentations to different end-users, such as policymakers. Available guidance on presentation formats focused on evidence networks, characteristics of individual trials, comparisons between direct and indirect estimates and assumptions of heterogeneity and/or inconsistency. Some guidelines also provided examples of figures and tables that could be used to present information. Conclusions: Limited guidance exists for researchers on how best to present NMAs in an accessible format, especially for non-technical end-users such as policymakers and clinicians. NMA guidelines may require further integration with end-users' needs, when NMAs are used to support healthcare policy and practice decisions.
