The service of police officers and soldiers at the Polish-Belarusian border during the 2021–2022 crisis

In recent years, the question of population migration has become more present in the Polish social and political life. One of the examples of this phenomenon was the set of events at the turn of 2021 and 2022, when thousands of people tried to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border and enter the Republic of Poland. The state reacted by reinforcing border services, deploying soldiers and police officers to serve on the border. The circumstances of the deployment, conditions of service and related impressions of participants became the subject of research, the results of which are presented in this article. Most of our respondents were deployed to the border by order and were scarcely or completely unprepared to the service. The social and living conditions during service are evaluated as rather good, although leisure activities were poorly organised. Among the feelings and impressions from service, the most highly appreciated were the team atmosphere and cooperation and the attitude of superiors. Nevertheless, what prevails is a moderate dissatisfaction with the job, with a vast majority of participants unwilling to repeat such service

The authors of this paper discuss the scope of medical confidentiality in terms of the urologist, andrologist and sexologist. They draw attention to special situations such as the problem of male infertility or other sexual problems in a relationship and the obligation of medical confidentiality. The paper also addresses the issue of how to deal with a patient under the age of 18 with intimate problems. The paper reviews the legislation addressing the aspect of medical confidentiality in everyday situations in the practice of urologists, andrologists and sexologists, taking into account special situations. The issues discussed include medical confidentiality in the use of data related to the patient and his/her procedure, the use of medical records for educational and scientific activities and the presence of bystanders during the medical examination, issues related to photo and video documentation of the procedure. The article covers topics related to medical confidentiality that will also be useful for doctors of other specialties. The authors of this paper discuss the scope of medical confidentiality in terms of the urologist, andrologist and sexologist. Rewitalizacja i rewaloryzacja urbanistyczna w programie studiów na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Śląskiej

Revitalization and urban renewal course was established at Faculty of Architecture in Politechnika Śląska (Silesian University of Technology) as a new course in academic year 2008-2009. Previously problems of that matter were presented fragmentally within the courses of Urban Design and Planning, Architectural Design, Monument Preservation and Urban Renewal. That situation resulted in specifi c misunderstanding. Students understood revitalization mainly as a spatial reconstruction or renewal of urban or architectural degradated objects. In that sense the main goal seemed to be gained by pure spatial act. New course is intended to show revitalization as interdisciplinary, long-term process. Operational aspects of executing this process are strongly stressed in the program of new course. The main didactic objective is to provide necessary knowledge and improve students ability and skills of urban space diagnosing, formulating aims, tasks and actions programming. One of those actions is renewal of urban space elements, treated as a tool of urban revitalization process

The authors present case studies of two patients, aged 76 and 77, who were diagnosed with fresh post-myocardial infarction ventricular septal defects (VSD) and were admitted for urgent surgical intervention. The report is a comment in the discussion concerning the optimal time for surgical intervention

Altered Elemental Distribution in Male Rat Brain Tissue as a Predictor of Glioblastoma Multiforme Growth : Studies Using SR-XRF Microscopy

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a particularly malignant primary brain tumor. Despite enormous advances in the surgical treatment of cancer, radio- and chemotherapy, the average survival of patients suffering from this cancer does not usually exceed several months. For obvious ethical reasons, the search and testing of the new drugs and therapies of GBM cannot be carried out on humans, and for this purpose, animal models of the disease are most often used. However, to assess the efficacy and safety of the therapy basing on these models, a deep knowledge of the pathological changes associated with tumor development in the animal brain is necessary. Therefore, as part of our study, the synchrotron radiation-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy was applied for multi-elemental micro-imaging of the rat brain in which glioblastoma develops. Elemental changes occurring in animals after the implantation of two human glioma cell lines as well as the cells taken directly from a patient suffering from GBM were compared. Both the extent and intensity of elemental changes strongly correlated with the regions of glioma growth. The obtained results showed that the observation of elemental anomalies accompanying tumor development within an animal’s brain might facilitate our understanding of the pathogenesis and progress of GBM and also determine potential biomarkers of its extension. The tumors appearing in a rat’s brain were characterized by an increased accumulation of Fe and Se, whilst the tissue directly surrounding the tumor presented a higher accumulation of Cu. Furthermore, the results of the study allow us to consider Se as a potential elemental marker of GBM progression
