Alcohol and intemperance in the soldier memoirs from the Second World War

This thesis brings up the topic of alcohol consumption and reception of intemperance, as well as alcoholism during Second World War from the perspective of its active participants - first of all conscripted soldiers, that is "normal people", who became soldiers unwillingly, because of the historical circumstances. Primary sources include memoirs in the wide meaning: journals, diaries, interviews (oral history). The main purposes of the thesis are as follows: to determine the importance of alcohol consumption in everyday life of soldiers, as well as in untypical situations; to depict the changes in drinking culture during the war; to define the confines of the social norms of using and abusing alcohol; to depict the national stereotypes related to alcohol. The analysis is based on the memoirs of a wide and representative group of soldiers, representing different countries, nationalities, armors (land forces, air forces), genders and ranks. Since the main sources are restricted to memoirs, the text considers the subject of memory and historical depictions in the memory of soldiers, rather than the conservatively understood history itself (chronological sequence of events).Praca podejmuje temat spożycia alkoholu oraz recepcji pijaństwa i alkoholizmu w trakcie II wojny światowej, z perspektywy jej aktywnych uczestników - w pierwszej kolejności żołnierzy poborowych, czyli zwykłych ludzi nie z własnej woli przyjmujących rolę żołnierzy. Podstawowy materiał źródłowy stanowią szeroko rozumiane materiały wspomnieniowe: pamiętniki, dzienniki, wywiady (oral history). Celem pracy jest m.in. określenie roli alkoholu w codziennym i niecodziennym życiu żołnierzy, zobrazowanie przemian w kulturze picia na przestrzeni wojny, wyznaczenie granic norm społecznych w zakresie spożywania i nadużywania alkoholu, a także szerzej rozpowszechnionych stereotypów narodowych związanych z alkoholem. Praca obejmuje żołnierzy różnych narodowości, należących do armii różnych państw, wywodzących się z szeregu środowisk, pełniących służbę w lotnictwie i wojskach lądowych na różnych stanowiskach i w różnych funkcjach oraz reprezentujących obydwie płcie. Z uwagi na oparcie analizy na materiałach wspomnieniowych, nie zaś na literaturze przedmiotu lub innego rodzaju źródłach, jest to przede wszystkim praca z zakresu pamięci i odwzorowania w niej rzeczywistości historycznej, nie zaś z zakresu historii rozumianej ściśle jako chronologiczny przebieg wydarzeń

A Polymeric Composite Material (rGO/PANI) for Acid Blue 129 Adsorption

Over the years, polyaniline (PANI) has received enormous attention due to its unique properties. Herein, it was chosen to develop a new polymeric composite material: reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline (rGO/PANI). The composite was prepared by a simple and cost-effective fabrication method of formation by mixing and sonication in various conditions. The obtained materials were characterized and identified using various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman and ATR–FTIR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The objective of the paper was to confirm its applicability for the removal of contaminants from water. Water could be contaminated by various types of pollutants, e.g., inorganics, heavy metals, and many other industrial compounds, including dyes. We confirmed that the Acid Blue 129 dyes can be substantially removed through adsorption on prepared rGO/PANI. The adsorption kinetic data were modeled using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models and the adsorption isotherm model was identified
