Gamma-Ray Burst Dust Echoes Revisited: Expectations at Early Times
Gamma-ray burst (GRB) dust echoes were first proposed as an alternative
explanation for the supernova-like (SN-like) components to the afterglows of
GRB 980326 and GRB 970228. However, the spectroscopic identification of Type Ic
SN 2003dh associated with GRB 030329, as well as the identification of SN-like
components to the afterglows of other GRBs, appears to have confirmed the
GRB/SN paradigm. However, the likely progenitors of Type Ic SNe are Wolf-Rayet
WC stars, and late-type WC stars have been observed to be surrounded by dust,
at a distance of 10^14 -- 10^15 cm from the star. Consequently, we revisit the
possibility of GRB dust echoes, not on a timescale of weeks after the burst but
on a timescale of minutes to hours. We find that if the optical flash is
sufficiently bright and the jet sufficiently wide, GRB afterglows may be
accompanied by chromatic variations on this timescale. From these signatures,
such model parameters as the inner radius of the dust distribution, the initial
opening angle of the jet, etc., may be deduced. With rapid and regular
localizations of GRBs by HETE-2, Integral, and now Swift, and new and improved
robotic telescope systems, these early-time GRB dust echoes may soon be
detected. We describe one such robotic telescope system, called PROMPT, that
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is building at the Cerro Tololo

Developmental divergence: motor trajectories in children with fragile X syndrome with and without co-occurring autism.
BackgroundAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly prevalent in fragile X syndrome (FXS), affecting 50-70% of males. Motor impairments are a shared feature across autism and FXS that may help to better characterize autism in FXS. As motor skills provide a critical foundation for various language, cognitive, and social outcomes, they may serve an important mechanistic role for autism in FXS. As such, this study aimed to identify differences in motor trajectories across direct assessment and parent-report measures of fine and gross motor development between FXS with and without autism, and typical development, while controlling for cognitive functioning.MethodsThis prospective longitudinal study included 42 children with FXS, 24 of whom also had ASD (FXS + ASD), as well as 40 typically developing children. The Mullen Scales of Early Learning provided a direct measure of fine and gross motor skills, and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales provided a measure of parent-reported fine and gross motor skills. Random slopes and random intercepts multilevel models were tested to determine divergence in developmental motor trajectories between groups when controlling for cognitive level.ResultsModel results indicated the children with FXS + ASD diverged from TD children by 9-months on all measures of gross and fine motor skills, even when controlling for cognitive level. Results also indicated an early divergence in motor trajectories of fine and gross motor skills between the FXS + ASD and FXS groups when controlling for cognitive level. This divergence was statistically significant by 18 months, with the FXS + ASD showing decelerated growth in motor skills across direct observation and parent-report measures.ConclusionsThis study is the first to examine longitudinal trends in motor development in children with FXS with and without comorbid ASD using both direct assessment and parent-report measures of fine and gross motor. Furthermore, it is among the first to account for nonverbal cognitive delays, a step towards elucidating the isolated role of motor impairments in FXS with and without ASD. Findings underscore the role of motor impairments as a possible signal representing greater underlying genetic liability, or as a potential catalyst or consequence, of co-occurring autism in FXS
Modeling the University Decision Process: The Effects of Faculty Participation in University Decision Making
This paper develops models of decision making in a university setting with and without faculty participation. The models predict values for the level of services or programs offered and the quality of those services in a university setting for either private nonprofit or public universities. These predictions indicate conditions under which outcomes are similar or differ with faculty participation in the decision process. The model predicts that without shared governance that universities may overinvest in non-academic quality (e.g. athletics, recreational activities). This would be exacerbated in for-profit forms of higher education. Notably, nonprofit and/or public institutions are not inefficient relative to for-profit institutions, which questions the rationale for subsidies to for-profit institutions. If academic quality provides positive externalities as has been suggested in the literature, then shared governance may be socially preferred to university decision making without faculty involvement.higher education, faculty governance, university decision making, incentives, nonprofit organization, public organization, organizational behavior

This conceptual constellation – that arises from the interpretation of the first season of the series, “The Frobisher case” – composes an organic pattern and provide a problematic image of the pornographic matter.
Homologous and unique G protein alpha subunits in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans
A cDNA corresponding to a known G protein alpha subunit, the alpha subunit of Go (Go alpha), was isolated and sequenced. The predicted amino acid sequence of C. elegans Go alpha is 80-87% identical to other Go alpha sequences. An mRNA that hybridizes to the C. elegans Go alpha cDNA can be detected on Northern blots. A C. elegans protein that crossreacts with antibovine Go alpha antibody can be detected on immunoblots. A cosmid clone containing the C. elegans Go alpha gene (goa-1) was isolated and mapped to chromosome I. The genomic fragments of three other C. elegans G protein alpha subunit genes (gpa-1, gpa-2, and gpa-3) have been isolated using the polymerase chain reaction. The corresponding cosmid clones were isolated and mapped to disperse locations on chromosome V. The sequences of two of the genes, gpa-1 and gpa-3, were determined. The predicted amino acid sequences of gpa-1 and gpa-3 are only 48% identical to each other. Therefore, they are likely to have distinct functions. In addition they are not homologous enough to G protein alpha subunits in other organisms to be classified. Thus C. elegans has G proteins that are identifiable homologues of mammalian G proteins as well as G proteins that appear to be unique to C. elegans. Study of identifiable G proteins in C. elegans may result in a further understanding of their function in other organisms, whereas study of the novel G proteins may provide an understanding of unique aspects of nematode physiology
The early career op Christopher Goodman and his place in the development of English protestant thought
The career and thought of Christopher Goodman provides the backbone of this thesis. They are used to demonstrate the interaction between men and ideas in England during the middle years of the sixteenth century and so give a clearer picture of the development of English protestant thought. The study has set out to discover three things about Goodman and his book 'How Superior Powers Oght to be Obeyd(^1). The first is to explain his intention in writing the book; the second to describe its content] and the third to understand its impact in 1558.As a study of Goodman's book cannot be divorced from the study of its author, the biographical details of Goodman's life to I558 are investigated. They help to give the fullest possible picture of his intentions in writing the book. Detailed consideration Is given to his experiences in Edwardian Oxford at Brasenose College and Christ church and to his exile in Germany and Switzerland during the reign of Mary. To give an accurate description of the content and impact of Goodman's book it is necessary to establish its ideological context. This involves documenting the personnel, activities and ideas of the Christ Church Circle and of the Marian exiles, particularly those who comprised the English exile community in Geneva. Only if such a picture is pieced together is it possible to distinguish between the unusual and the commonplace in Goodman's thinking, and appreciate the revolutionary nature of his concept of a covenanted society, the people of God
Virtual patient design : exploring what works and why : a grounded theory study
Objectives:
Virtual patients (VPs) are online representations of clinical cases used in medical education. Widely adopted, they are well placed to teach clinical reasoning skills. International technology standards mean VPs can be created, shared and repurposed between institutions. A systematic review has highlighted the lack of evidence to support which of the numerous VP designs may be effective, and why. We set out to research the influence of VP design on medical undergraduates.
Methods:
This is a grounded theory study into the influence of VP design on undergraduate medical students. Following a review of the literature and publicly available VP cases, we identified important design properties. We integrated them into two substantial VPs produced for this research. Using purposeful iterative sampling, 46 medical undergraduates were recruited to participate in six focus groups. Participants completed both VPs, an evaluation and a 1-hour focus group discussion. These were digitally recorded, transcribed and analysed using grounded theory, supported by computer-assisted analysis. Following open, axial and selective coding, we produced a theoretical model describing how students learn from VPs.
Results:
We identified a central core phenomenon designated ‘learning from the VP’. This had four categories: VP Construction; External Preconditions; Student–VP Interaction, and Consequences. From these, we constructed a three-layer model describing the interactions of students with VPs. The inner layer consists of the student's cognitive and behavioural preconditions prior to sitting a case. The middle layer considers the VP as an ‘encoded object’, an e-learning artefact and as a ‘constructed activity’, with associated pedagogic and organisational elements. The outer layer describes cognitive and behavioural change.
Conclusions:
This is the first grounded theory study to explore VP design. This original research has produced a model which enhances understanding of how and why the delivery and design of VPs influence learning. The model may be of practical use to authors, institutions and researchers
