It has been suggested that low-income, students of color, and first-generation students face major impediments to feeling like they belong on campus (Ostrove & Long, 2007). Because first-generation students come to college with a myriad of challenges that directly impact their first-year experience, understanding how best to support this population is a crucial responsibility. Sense of belonging has been shown to be related to academic achievement, retention, and persistence to degree completion for students from historically marginalized groups (Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Rhee, 2008; Strayhorn, 2008d; Walton & Cohen, 2011). The purpose of this study was to understand how first-generation students achieve a sense of belonging in the first-year of college and how their sense of belonging contributes to their persistence. The following research questions guided the study: 1) How do first-generation students achieve a sense of belonging; 2) How did their sense of belonging affect their persistence from the first to second year? Interviews were conducted with 12 first-generation students who completed their first year of college during the 2015-2016 academic year. Data were analyzed using an ongoing process that began with reviewing and coding each interview and consolidating codes recursively within and across interviews to derive the themes that addressed the research questions (Anfara, Brown, & Mangione, 2002; Corbin & Strauss, 1990). Three themes described how students tried to achieve a sense of belonging in the first year of college: (a) by building relationships with other students, faculty and staff, (2) by getting involved in activities on campus, and (3) by becoming engaged in the residence hall experience. Not all participants developed a sense of belonging, nevertheless they all persisted from the first to second year. The majority of participants (7) attributed their persistence to having achieved a sense of belonging. Four of the remaining participants, none of whom reported having achieved a sense of belonging, attributed their persistence to personal reasons and motivations; and one, who achieved a sense of belonging, felt it played no part in her persistence

Employee engagement has emerged as one of the most important topics in the sphere of human resource management. It stands for the extent to which the employees are fully involved in his/her work and will act in a way that furthers their organization interests. The study on this paper is to examine and gain better understanding of the drivers that influence employee engagement in a printing company. Employee communication, employee development and rewards and recognitions were selected as independent variables. Sample for the study consists of 123 staff from various levels and departments. Data were collected with the help of a questionnaire and analyzed using the Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 15. Throughout the statistical analysis, it is found that there is a significant relationship between the two independent variables namely employee communication and employee development with the dependent variable, employee engagement. Among the two independent variables, employee communication is the strongest drive to employee engagement in the printing company

Introduction: Suicide has been labeled a serious public health dilemma in the United States. Military personnel have suicide rates greater than non-military individuals. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been used as a means to help military personnel to overcome suicidal thoughts and feelings. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on military patients’ mental health and how it affects the rate of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and deaths by suicide in military patients. Methodology: This study utilized a literature review and a semi-structured interview with a Veteran Affairs social worker. Multiple databases were used to collect 36 total sources. All sources were in English and published from 2012 to 2022. 18 sources were used in the introduction and 18 sources were used in the results and discussion section. Results: The results showed that overall, CBT has a beneficial impact on suicide rates and suicidal ideations amongst military veterans. As well as the factors that contribute to suicidal ideations, such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Discussion/Conclusion: The literature review found evidence that CBT had better outcomes for military veterans’ suicide rates and suicidal ideations. However, this was not the case for all the studies as some indicated little significance in CBT reducing the suicide rates of military veterans. Further study is needed to evaluate how CBT effect military veterans suicide rates and suicidal ideations

UR-62 Deep Learning Approach to Network Anomaly Detection

A model of network anomaly detection capable of detecting a multitude of network attacks. This model is based on the hypothesis that by studying a system’s network records for irregular patterns during system usage, network anomalies can be identified. This model contains information about the type of attacks and metrics. This model is to be used in any type of distributed environment. The general purpose of this model is to detect when an attack is or has happened using deep learning techniques to optimize the training speed, accuracy and robustness of attack detection. This is done to stop the epidemic of attacks that hit companies like GitHub, Nobel Foundation, Vodafone, and some Russian banks [13], with Google being the only company to block the 46 million DDOS attacks per second [13]

Among them, only the ethanol extract of the root of L. pumila var. alata exhibited a weak oestrogenic activity at 10-50 mg/ml. The samples that exhibited significant cytotoxic effect were the ethanol extract of the roots of L. pumila var. alata (IC50 433 mg/ml), and the aqueous extracts of the roots of L. pumila var. alata (IC50 433 mg/ml) and the leaves of L. pumila var. pumila (IC50 458 mg/ml)

The Ambivalence of Librarianship, the Pipeline, and Pathways for BIPOC

    Get PDF
For BIPOC, the library pipeline evokes strong ambivalence. It provides a fixed entry into the professional world, but the long term prospects are neither clear nor without consequence. For many, there is the expectation that regardless of personal choice, they will enter leadership roles. The nuance of these spaces is undeniable, especially if one considers the fact that hiring BIPOC into academic librarianship is often predicated on these “separate” programs. Without question, these pipelines provide fiduciary and career support for those who work within them, but the tradeoffs have not always been beneficial either in a cultural or holistic manner. Simply getting rid of the pipeline without a structural alternative is not the answer, but neither is the action of doing nothing and maintaining these inequitable working conditions silently. We refer to April Hathcock’s blog post, Librarianship As A Plantation as a framework for examining these initiatives. New librarians are often forced to engage in pipeline initiatives, like diversity residencies, through an unchallenged paucity narrative. Indeed, many residencies have long been documented to have exploitative features. And yet, the alternative to not engaging in these initiatives is often to struggle to get a foot in the door. The highest levels of diversity are often found in libraries\u27 non-librarian ranks, but there is an implacable barrier between non-librarians and librarians that is often only breached through engaging in these initiatives. Lack of success in this process is generally recognized as the resident’s or the BIPOC worker’s inability to handle the pressure, and not an issue with the pipeline itself. Is the cost worth the investment? Is there more harm than value derived from these programs? What could the structural alternatives be, or are they even possible? This roundtable will invite attendees to cast a critical eye on the nuance within pipeline initiatives

Thesis of Master of Science in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing at the University of Zambia. Background: Mental disorders are common among university students, however most students are reluctant to use available mental health services such as student counselling services. Substantial amount of literature suggest that delayed treatment negatively impacts academic performance and life in general. At Mulungushi University 17 cases of mental disorders were recorded among students in the past five years and the proportion of students seeking counselling dropped to 6.8% in 2018 and 5.4% in 2020.Further, one student dropped out of school due to a mental disorder. This study aimed at determining the mental health seeking intentions, facilitators and barriers to mental health seeking intentions among students at Mulungushi University. Methodology: An analytical cross sectional quantitative design was used with the help of a self-administered questionnaire adapted from 5 validated tools namely; General Help-Seeking Questionnaire (GHSQ), Mental Health Knowledge Schedule(MHKS), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support(MSPSS), Perception of stigmatization of others for seeking help scale (PSOSH) and Barriers to Access Care Evaluation (BACE-3). 137 Nursing and Pharmacy students were randomly selected after meeting the inclusion criteria. Informed consent to participate in the study was obtained from the respondents. Data was analysed using version 23 of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).Chi Square tests were used to determine the association between variables and Binary Logistic Regression Analysis was used to identify predictors of mental health seeking intentions. Results: The results of the study showed that mental health seeking intentions were weak, 69% of students indicated that they were unlikely to seek help. Further, university sources of help were the least preferred by students, 60 % of students indicated that they were unlikely to seek help from university-based sources. The study also showed that stigma was associated with poor mental health seeking intentions (OR=3.190, CI=0.8-11.339, P=0.041), students who were perceiving stigma were 3.19 times less likely to seek help than those who were not perceiving stigma. Although barriers to care showed no significant effect at a 5% level of significance, the odds showed that those who were perceiving barriers to access care were 1.41 less likely to seek help compared to those who were not perceiving barriers to access care. (OR=1.418, CI=0.623-3.230, P=0.404). The study also revealed that there was an association between gender and mental health seeking intentions. (OR=0.90, CI=0.3826-2.137, P=0.003), females showed stronger intentions to seek help seeking than males. The examined facilitators were social support and mental health literacy and no significant relationships were observed between mental health literacy, social support and mental health seeking intentions. Conclusion; Based on these findings, the study recommends that efforts should be channelled towards overcoming stigma and site-specific barriers to access care which are contributing to poor mental health seeking intentions among students. Further, special consideration must be placed on males through these interventions since they showed lower health seeking intentions than females

Coupled mech nical and electromagnetic modeling of eddy current sensors

To effectively monitor the vibration of blades in a rotating machine, a non-contacting method called blade tip-timing (BTT) has been used. The method is based on the analysis of the differential arrival times of the blades at sensors mounted on the stator to characterize the vibration amplitude and frequency of the blades. These sensors can also provide blade tip clearance measurement. A combination of these data can provide a robust condition monitoring approach for the early detection of blade cracks. Eddy current sensors (ECS) have shown great potential to assess the health of an engine without any need for direct access to the blade and therefore they are insensitive to the presence of any type of contaminant. Also, both tip timing and tip clearance of each blade could be measured by these sensors in real time and at high resolution. ECSs measure the magnetic field caused by eddy currents during the blade motion, and hence are a coupled mechanical and electromagnetic problem. An ECS on the casing of a machine has been modeled to fully understand how the dynamic response of the blade is measured by the sensors. Detailed 2-D and 3-D modeling and simulation of a rotating simplified bladed disk passing an ECS is presented. The effect of the variation of the rotation speed and the gap between the sensor and the blade tip on the accuracy of the measurement is investigated. Such an analysis will enable the reliable monitoring of blade damage during engine operation
