    Oxidation processes in magneto-optic and related materials

    The surface oxidation processes of thin films of magneto-optic materials, such as the rare-earth transition metal alloys have been studied, starting in ultrahigh vacuum environments, using surface analysis techniques, as a way of modeling the oxidation processes which occur at the base of a defect in an overcoated material, at the instant of exposure to ambient environments. Materials examined have included FeTbCo alloys, as well as those same materials with low percentages of added elements, such a Ta, and their reactivities to both O2 and H2O compared with materials such as thin Fe films coated with ultrathin adlayers of Ti. The surface oxidation pathways for these materials is reviewed, and XPS data presented which indicates the type of oxides formed, and a critical region of Ta concentration which provides optimum protection

    Drones vs helicopters for broad-scale animal surveys considerations for future use

    Effective monitoring is key for effective wildlife management. Aerial surveys are a proven method for monitoring medium/large-sized mammals (e.g. macropods, feral pigs) in Australia's rangelands. However, conventional aircraft are noisy, expensive, and considered an occupational safety risk for biologists. UAS (unmanned aerial systems, or drones) may offer potential safety and efficiency gains, but need to be assessed against the current best-practice techniques. We tested the ability of a long-range, fixed-wing drone (300m agl, 65-93 km h-1 , thermal and colour imaging) to survey macropod populations and validated the results against those from conventional helicopter surveys (61m agl, 93 km h-1 , human observers). Four, 80-km long transects at Roma in southwestern Queensland were surveyed and the outputs analysed using line-transect distance sampling methods. The drone was able to survey over half (56%) of the 320 km transects, and over 448 km of survey flights in total. However, the drone technique was unable to distinguish between macropod species, recorded <13% of the macropod density observed during the helicopter survey, and required more flight and data processing time. Long-range drones clearly have potential for landscape-scale wildlife monitoring but results must match or exceed the conventional techniques. Future UAS applications to wildlife monitoring require a proven ability to identify animals, a similar or greater detection probability than conventional techniques, an efficient means of data collation/analysis, and comparable costs to current-best practice survey methods.     Acetylcholinesterase inhibition dose–response modeling for chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-oxon

    AbstractThis paper evaluates new data for cholinesterase inhibition with chlorpyrifos (CPF). Marty et al. (2012) recently conducted a CPF cholinesterase inhibition study in rats that included testing of males and females, dosing by gavage or diet, administration in corn oil or milk, and with pups and adults. Additionally, the study included cholinesterase inhibition testing for CPF-oxon, the active moiety that inhibits cholinesterase. The study included 5–6 dose groups with eight animals/sex/group for most of the tests. This paper provides a benchmark dose (BMD) analysis of the data from Marty et al. (2012), including a BMD meta-analysis that includes CPF cholinesterase inhibition data from different assays within the Marty et al. (2012) study and, in one case, from another study. From the meta-analysis, the recommended BMD10s, based on brain acetylcholinesterase inhibition, are 1.7mg/kg/day (BMDL10=1.3mg/kg/day) for acute doses to children and adults, and 0.67mg/kg/day (BMDL10=0.53mg/kg/day) for repeat doses to children and adults. At the dose levels considered in this analysis, there was no evidence of a difference in responses between males and females, corn oil versus milk administration, or pups versus adults. The data on pups versus adults show that an extra safety factor to protect the young is not needed for CPF. CPF data from the literature suggest that brain cholinesterase inhibition is the most appropriate metric for cholinesterase inhibition risk assessment

    Spin polarized transport current in n-type co-doped ZnO thin films measured by Andreev spectroscopy

    We use point contact Andreev reflection measurements to determine the spin polarization of the transport current in pulse laser deposited thin films of ZnO with 1% Al and with and without 2%Mn. Only films with Mn are ferromagnetic and show spin polarization of the transport current of up to 55 ±\pm 0.5% at 4.2 K, in sharp contrast to measurements of the nonmagnetic films without Mn where the polarization is consistent with zero. Our results imply strongly that ferromagnetism in these Al doped ZnO films requires the presence of Mn.Comment: Published versio

    Molecular Line Observations of the Small Protostellar Group L1251B

    We present molecular line observations of L1251B, a small group of pre- and protostellar objects, and its immediate environment in the dense C18O core L1251E. These data are complementary to near-infrared, submillimeter and millimeter continuum observations reported by Lee et al. (2006, ApJ, 648, 491; Paper I). The single-dish data of L1251B described here show very complex kinematics including infall, rotation and outflow motions, and the interferometer data reveal these in greater detail. Interferometer data of N2H+ 1-0 suggest a very rapidly rotating flattened envelope between two young stellar objects, IRS1 and IRS2. Also, interferometer data of CO 2-1 resolve the outflow associated with L1251B seen in single-dish maps into a few narrow and compact components. Furthermore, the high resolution data support recent theoretical studies of molecular depletions and enhancements that accompany the formation of protostars within dense cores. Beyond L1251B, single-dish data are also presented of a dense core located ~150" to the east that, in Paper I, was detected at 850 micron but has no associated point sources at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. The relative brightness between molecules, which have different chemical timescales, suggests it is less chemically evolved than L1251B. This core may be a site for future star formation, however, since line profiles of HCO+, CS, and HCN show asymmetry with a stronger blue peak, which is interpreted as an infall signature.Comment: 46 pages, 18 figures. Csanady turned 80 in December 2005 and we celebrate it with this special Progress in Oceanography issue. It comprises 20 papers covering some of the many areas that Gabe contributed significantly throughout his professional career. In this introductory paper we briefly review Gabe’s career as an engineer, meteorologist and oceanographer, and highlight some of his major contributions to oceanography, both as a scientist as well as an educator. But we also use this opportunity to remember and thank Gabe, and his wife Joyce, for being such good friends and mentors to several generations of oceanographers. The authors of the collection of papers in this volume deserve special thanks for their efforts.     Vasoactivity and Vasoconstriction Changes in Cattle Related to Time Off Toxic Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue

    Previous research has indicated that serotonergic and α-adrenergic receptors in peripheral vasculature are affected by exposure of cattle grazing toxic endophyte-infected (E+; Epichlöe coenophialia) tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum). The objective of this experiment was to determine the period of time necessary for the vascular effects of ergot alkaloids to subside. Two experiments were conducted to investigate changes in vascular contractile response and vasoconstriction over time relative to removal from an ergot alkaloid-containing E+ tall fescue pasture. In Experiment 1, lateral saphenous vein biopsies were conducted on 21 predominantly Angus steers (357 ± 3 kg body weight) at 0 (n = 6), 7 (n = 6), 14 (n = 5), or 28 days (n = 4) after removal from grazing pasture (3.0 ha; endpoint ergovaline + ergovalinine = 1.35 mg/kg DM) for 126 days. In Experiment 2, lateral saphenous veins were biopsied from 24 Angus-cross steers (361 ± 4 kg body weight) at 0, 21, 42, and 63 days (n = 6 per time point) following removal from grazing tall fescue pastures (3.0 ha; first 88 days endpoint ergovaline + ergovalinine = 0.15 mg/kg DM; last 18 days endpoint ergovaline + ergovalinine = 0.57 mg/kg DM) for 106 total days. Six steers (370 ± 18 kg body weight) off of bermudagrass pasture for the same time interval were also biopsied on Day 0 and Day 63 (n = 3 per time point). Additionally, in Experiment 2, cross-sectional ultrasound scans of caudal artery at the fourth coccygeal vertebra were taken on Days 0, 8, 15, 21, 29, 36, 42, and 45 to determine mean artery luminal area to evaluate vasoconstriction. In both experiments, steers were removed from pasture and housed in a dry lot and fed a corn silage diet for the duration of biopsies and ultrasound scans. Biopsied vessels used to evaluate vasoactivity were cleaned, incubated in a multimyograph, and exposed to increasing concentrations of 4-Bromo-3,6-dimethoxybenzocyclobuten-1-yl) methylamine hydrobromide (TCB2; 5HT2A agonist), guanfacine (GF; α2A-adrenergic agonist), and (R)-(+)-m-nitrobiphenyline oxalate (NBP; α2C-adrenergic agonist) in both experiments and ergovaline (ERV) and ergotamine (ERT) in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. In Experiment 1, days off pasture × agonist concentration was not significant (p \u3e 0.1) for all four compounds tested. In Experiment 2, GF, NBP, TCB2 and ERT were significant for days off pasture × agonist concentration interaction (p \u3c 0.02) and vasoactivity increased over time. Vasoactivity to agonists was reduced (p \u3c 0.05) when steers were initially removed from E+ tall fescue pasture compared to bermudagrass, but did not differ by Day 63 for any variable. Luminal areas of caudal arteries in steers grazed on E+ tall fescue relaxed and were similar to steers that had grazed bermudagrass for 36 days on non-toxic diet (p = 0.15). These data demonstrate changes in peripheral vasoactivity and recovery from vasoconstriction occur beyond five weeks off toxic pasture and 5HT2A receptors appear to be more dramatically affected in the lateral saphenous vein by grazing E+ tall fescue pasture than adrenergic receptors
