A Proposed Program in Agricultural Extension Works for Negroes in Smith County, Texas. County Extension Agents, of today, know that one of the greatest problems facing agents is to work out the most desirable kind of a county Program. A program that reaches the most significant problems of farm people problems that are holding back the progress of agriculture and affecting the well-being and happiness of large numbers of people. With several years\u27 experience and training in a new approach to program building, the writer proposes to study available literature, summarize findings in literature, plan a procedure for developing a Program in Smith County, and modify the procedure so that it will have general application. The logical starting point in County Agricultural extension program development is to define Extension Work in general. Extension Work is an out-of-school system of education in which adults and young people learn by doing. It is a partnership between the government, the land-grant Colleges, and the people, which provide service and education designed to meet the needs of people. Its fundamental objective is the development of the people. If there is to be progress and not mere evolution in the development of people, the objectives of extension must be clearly and periodically determined in view of progress and changed conditions. The fundamental objective of program building is to teach people how to analyze and solve their own problems with the help of the Extension Service. If this program-building process achieves this objective, the results, measurable in social and economic progress will justify the efforts

In Quest of a Wittgensteinian Hinge Epistemology

Hinge epistemology is a family of theories about justification (and knowledge) which give centre-stage to Wittgenstein’s notion of a “hinge”. In the following, I will first put forward some basic methodological considerations regarding the relationship between merely exegetical work on, in particular, Wittgenstein’s texts, and more theoretically committed work, which aims at developing suggestions that can be found in the texts, even though they are not clearly attributable as such to their author (§1). I will then summarize the main tenets of what, to date, is still the most widespread reading of On Certainty (§2) – the so-called “framework reading”. In light of the initial methodological considerations and of this exegesis of On Certainty, I will then review some contemporary attempts at developing Wittgenstein’s ideas in an anti-skeptical direction, such as Crispin Wright’s, Michael Williams’ and Duncan Pritchard’s (§3). I will argue that, their intrinsic merits notwithstanding, they fail to take proper measure of Wittgenstein’s own position. I will then close by sketching my own version of hinge epistemology and by highlighting points of contact and disagreement with Wittgenstein’s own views as portrayed by the framework reading (§4)

Coming Home to Caring Communities: A Blueprint for Serving Veterans and Their Families

Communities across the U.S. are grappling with veterans' reintegration issues, but the answers about how best to serve veterans and their families may be elusive, because every region has different resources, service gaps, and needs. Despite these variations, a common core of key community-based supportive services and practices has been identified in order to help communities serve their veterans and families in a more consistent and professional manner. So what can a community do to help? How would service providers, local leaders, and citizens begin to organize their community's resources to support veterans and families effectively? What would that look like? How would it be paid for? Has it been done well in other communities? This blueprint answers these questions as a combination "how-to manual" and toolkit with an inside look at how an existing Center operates. This document provides a blueprint of "what works" to help communities identify and implement the programs their local communities need. The details in this blueprint leverage the knowledge of Veterans Outreach Center (VOC) in Rochester, NY, the oldest community-based nonprofit organization in the nation devoted exclusively to serving veterans and their families. The information in this blueprint will help communities get a jump-start on developing local programs and initiatives of their own. Ultimately, these tools will help increase access to consistently high-quality community-based supportive services for veterans and their families

Social and communication behaviors are often a focus of instruction for individuals with autism. A theatre rehearsal and production process is challenging and joyful work that nurtures the development of social and language skills. This study evaluated and described social and language behaviors for students with autism both before and after a 10-week theatre experience. The results indicated that, when compared with a control group, the students with theatre experiences had significant and positive changes in the development of social and language skills. Most particularly, these students had significant improvement in social responsiveness, acknowledgement of the perspective of others, and participation and cooperation. The theatre experiences led to positive changes in social and communication behaviors for students with autism
