    Improving The Availability Of Thermal Conductivity Data And Modeling How Inaccurate Thermal Conductivity Data Affect Geothermal Power Production Models

    The availability of site specific thermal conductivity data can be improved by measuring irregularly sized samples and by using GIS tools. New calculations for use with measurements of samples with irregular shapes and sizes result in valid thermal conductivity values. Using the new thermal conductivity data along with GIS tools reasonable estimates of thermal conductivity may be made for sites where no samples are available. Ten thirty-year long production simulations using different thermal conductivity values for reservoir rock and for overlying rock were completed resulting in produced water temperatures that varied by as much as +3% to -5.6% from the baseline. Such a large range in production temperatures could result in electrical power generation estimate errors as large as +8% to -15

    Extracting heading and temporal range from optic flow: Human performance issues

    Pilots are able to extract information about their vehicle motion and environmental structure from dynamic transformations in the out-the-window scene. In this presentation, we focus on the information in the optic flow which specifies vehicle heading and distance to objects in the environment, scaled to a temporal metric. In particular, we are concerned with modeling how the human operators extract the necessary information, and what factors impact their ability to utilize the critical information. In general, the psychophysical data suggest that the human visual system is fairly robust to degradations in the visual display, e.g., reduced contrast and resolution or restricted field of view. However, extraneous motion flow, i.e., introduced by sensor rotation, greatly compromises human performance. The implications of these models and data for enhanced/synthetic vision systems are discussed

    Global gene expression of histologically normal primary skin cells from BCNS subjects reveals "single-hit" effects that are influenced by rapamycin

    Studies of dominantly heritable cancers enabled insights about tumor progression. BCNS is a dominantly inherited disorder that is characterized by developmental abnormalities and postnatal neoplasms, principally BCCs. We performed an exploratory gene expression profiling of primary cell cultures derived from clinically unaffected skin biopsies of BCNS gene-carriers (PTCH1 +/-) and normal individuals. PCA and HC of untreated keratinocytes or fibroblasts failed to clearly distinguish BCNS samples from controls. These results are presumably due to the common suppression of canonical HH signaling in vitro. We then used a relaxed threshold (p-value <0.05, no FDR cut-off; FC 1.3) that identified a total of 585 and 857 genes differentially expressed in BCNS keratinocytes and fibroblasts samples, respectively. A GSEA identified pancreatic β cell hallmark and mTOR signaling genes in BCNS keratinocytes, whereas analyses of BCNS fibroblasts identified gene signatures regulating pluripotency of stem cells, including WNT pathway. Significantly, rapamycin treatment (FDR<0.05), affected a total of 1411 and 4959 genes in BCNS keratinocytes and BCNS fibroblasts, respectively. In contrast, rapamycin treatment affected a total of 3214 and 4797 genes in normal keratinocytes and normal fibroblasts, respectively. The differential response of BCNS cells to rapamycin involved 599 and 1463 unique probe sets in keratinocytes and fibroblasts, respectively. An IPA of these genes in the presence of rapamycin pointed to hepatic fibrosis/stellate cell activation, and HIPPO signaling in BCNS keratinocytes, whereas mitochondrial dysfunction and AGRN expression were uniquely enriched in BCNS fibroblasts. The gene expression changes seen here are likely involved in the etiology of BCCs and they may represent biomarkers/targets for early intervention

    Postoperative Complications of True Dropless Cataract Surgery versus Standard Topical Drops

    Purpose  Compare postoperative outcomes in cataract surgery between eyes with standard drop regimen versus dropless protocol by residents. Design  Retrospective cohort study between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2020. Methods  The study was performed at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital in Houston, Harris County, Texas. A total of 547 eyes (234 dropless vs. 313 standard) with phacoemulsification cataract surgery and minimum of 1-month follow-up with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were included. Dropless received 40 mg sub-Tenon\u27s triamcinolone and intracameral moxifloxacin. Patients were followed at postoperative day 1 (POD1), week 1 (POW1), and month 1 (POM1). Postoperative rate of BCVA better than 20/40 (Good vision) and rate of complications were compared between groups. Results  Good vision on POM1 in dropless (77.8%) was noninferior to standard (75.1%, p  = 0.80). Complication rate in dropless (28.6%) was noninferior to standard (24.0%, p  = 0.13). Intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation on POD1 ( p  = 0.041) and anterior chamber (AC) cells on POW1 and POM1 ( p  \u3c 0.001) were more frequent in dropless. Mean spherical equivalent at POM1 was better in dropless (−0.37 D [±0.81 D]) compared with standard (−0.61D [±0.77 D], p  = 0.001). Early posterior capsular opacification (early PCO) was more frequent in dropless ( p  = 0.042). Conclusions  Postoperative rate of BCVA better than 20/40 and rate of postoperative complications were noninferior, although dropless had higher rates of AC inflammation, IOP elevation, and early PCO

    Non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence: a longitudinal study of the relationship between NSSI, psychological distress and perceived parenting

    Objective: The present study investigates whether either adolescents' psychological distress and/or perceived parenting predicted the occurrence of NSSI. Furthermore, the consequences of NSSI are examined in a three-wave longitudinal study. Design: The sample at time 1 (age 12) consisted of 1396 adolescent reports and 1438 parent reports. At time 2 (age 13), 827 adolescent reports and 936 parent reports were obtained. Time 3 (age 14) included 754 adolescent reports and 790 parent reports. Psychological distress of adolescents was measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Perceived parenting behaviors were examined by the Parental Behavior Scale and the Psychological Control Scale. Results: A total of 10% of the adolescents engaged in NSSI at least once before age 15. Higher psychological distress of adolescents at time 1 was associated with the presence of NSSI at time 2 or 3. The association between psychological distress at time 1 and perception of decreased parental rule setting at time 3 was mediated by the presence of NSSI at time 2. Conclusions: The present study showed that psychological distress at age 12 predicts NSSI over time and that parental awareness of NSSI changes the perception of parenting behaviors.     Depletion-Driven Morphological Control of Bundled Actin Networks

    The actin cytoskeleton is a semiflexible biopolymer network whose morphology is controlled by a wide range of biochemical and physical factors. Actin is known to undergo a phase transition from a single-filament state to a bundled state by the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules in sufficient concentration. While the depletion interaction experienced by these biopolymers is well-known, the effect of changing the molecular weight of the depletant is less well understood. Here, we experimentally identify a phase transition in solutions of actin from networks of filaments to networks of bundles by varying the molecular weight of PEG polymers, while holding the concentration of these PEG polymers constant. We examine the states straddling the phase transition in terms of micro and macroscale properties. We find that the mesh size, bundle diameter, persistence length, and intra-bundle spacing between filaments across the line of criticality do not show significant differences, while the relaxation time, storage modulus, and degree of bundling change between the two states do show significant differences. Our results demonstrate the ability to tune actin network morphology and mechanics by controlling depletant size, a property which could be exploited to develop actin-based materials with switchable rigidity.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures.     Photo-detrapping of solvated electrons in an ionic liquid

    金沢大学理工研究域自然システム学系We studied the dynamics of photo-detrapped solvated electrons in the ionic liquid trimethyl-N-propylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TMPA-TFSI) using laser flash photolysis. The solvated electrons were produced by the electron photodetachment from iodide via a 248 nm KrF excimer laser. The solvated electron decayed by first-order kinetics with a lifetime of about 240 ns. The spectrum of the solvated electron in the ionic liquid TMPA-TFSI is very broad with a peak around 1100 nm. After the 248 nm pulse, a 532 nm pulse was used to subsequently detrap the solvated electrons. After the detrapping pulse, quasi-permanent bleaching was observed. The relative magnitude of the bleaching in the solvated electron absorbance was measured from 500 to 1000 nm. The amount of bleaching depends on the probe wavelength. The fraction of bleached absorbance was larger at 500 nm than that at 1000 nm, suggesting that there are at least two species that absorb 532 nm light. We discuss the present results from viewpoint of the heterogeneity of ionic liquids. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd
