    Background: Involvement of the social worker in patient management leads to better holistic care. A better understanding of the service offered is needed. -- Objectives: The aim is to review the referrals made to the social worker in Primary HealthCare in Malta since the introduction of the service. Other objectives include increasing the awareness of this service, and improving community care. -- Method: A retrospective analysis of the data obtained by the social worker was carried out by examining all the referrals to the social worker between the 17th August 2015 and the 30th September 2018. Data collection included the total number of referrals, age, nationality, locality, source of referral, time from referral to first contact, reason for referral and co-morbidities. -- Results: The majority of subjects (n=52) were 65 years or older. There were 56.4%, 16.8% and 25.7% of cases from the North, Central and South catchment areas respectively. The majority of patients (n=69) were referred by GPs (67.6%). The others were referred by other healthcare professionals or they were self-referred. The average waiting time from the date of referral to the initial contact with the social worker was 18 days. Most referrals were due to social problems (52%) whilst 38 clients (37%) suffered from mental health illness and 37 clients (36%) suffered from cardiac diseases mainly hypertension and ischaemic heart disease. -- Conclusion: Recommendations for increasing awareness which will lead to better community care were put forward in the discussion, including implications for policy making and making good use of the service.peer-reviewe

    Dynamic Correlations across REIT Sub-Sectors

    The issue of whether Real Estate Investment Trusts should pursue a focused or diversified investment strategy remains an ongoing debate within both the academic and industry communities. This paper considers the relationship between REITs focused on different property sectors in a GARCH-DCC framework. The daily conditional correlations reveal that since 1990 there has been a marked upward trend in the coefficients between US REIT sub-sectors. The findings imply that REITs are behaving in a far more homogeneous manner than in the past. Furthermore, the argument that REITs should be focused in order that investors can make the diversification decision is reduced.

    Energetics of the Charge-Coupled Substitution Si4+ Na++ T3+ in the-Glasses NaTO2–SiO2 (T = Al, Fe, Ga, B)

    Heats of solution in molten 2PbO·B2O3 at 973 K are reported for glasses xNaT3+O2–(1 –x)SiO2 for T = Fe, Ga. These measurements, combined with previous data for T = Al, B, give a relative measure of the enthalpy of the charge-coupled substitution Si4+→ Na++ T3+. The heats of solution become more endothermic with increasing x for x→ 0.5 and exhibit a maximum near x= 0.5. This indicates an exothermic enthalpy for the substitution and an overall stabilization of the glasses. The degree to which the glasses are stabilized decreases in the order Al > Ga > Fe > B. On the basis of molecular orbital calculations, X-ray scattering, and Raman spectroscopy, it is argued that this trend is primarily due to a decrease in the range of energetically favorable T–O–T bond angles as Al, Ga, Fe, and B are substituted for Si

    Starburst or AGN Dominance in Submillimetre-Luminous Candidate AGN?

    Full text link
    It is widely believed that ultraluminous infrared (IR) galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity are triggered by galaxy interactions and merging, with the peak of activity occurring at z~2, where submillimetre galaxies are thousands of times more numerous than local ULIRGs. In this evolutionary picture, submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) would host an AGN, which would eventually grow a black hole (BH) strong enough to blow off all of the gas and dust leaving an optically luminous QSO. To probe this evolutionary sequence we have focussed on the 'missing link' sources, which demonstrate both strong starburst (SB) and AGN signatures, in order to determine if the SB is the main power source even in SMGs when we have evidence that an AGN is present from their IRAC colours. The best way to determine if a dominant AGN is present is to look for their signatures in the mid-infrared with the Spitzer IRS, since often even deep X-ray observations miss identifying the presence of AGN in heavily dust-obscured SMGs. We present the results of our audit of the energy balance between star-formation and AGN within this special sub-population of SMGs -- where the BH has grown appreciably to begin heating the dust emission.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure. A Concise Review of the Conflicting Roles of Dopamine-1 versus Dopamine-2 Receptors in Wound Healing.

    Catecholamines play an important regulatory role in cutaneous wound healing. The exact role of dopamine in human epidermis has yet to be fully elucidated. Current published evidence describes its differential effects on two separate families of G protein coupled receptors: D1-like and D2-like dopamine receptors. Dopamine may enhance angiogenesis and wound healing through its action on dopamine D1 receptors, while impairing wound healing when activating D2 receptors. This review summarizes the evidence for the role of dopamine in wound healing and describes potential mechanisms behind its action on D1 versus D2-like receptors in the skin
