Innovation potentials and innovative networks in European metropolitan regions - some empirical evidence from the Metropolitan Area of Barcelone Revilla Diez, Javier; Escorsa, Pere and Camacho, Jaime Alberto Interregional competitiveness and the relationship between technology and competitiveness has increasingly become the object of considerable interest. The stimulation of innovation potentials within a region is becoming more and more decisive in the competition between regions. Although a precise definition of the term innovation potential is difficult, there is no doubt that it is essentially the stock of knowledge and its use which makes up the innovation potential of a region. This stock, however, is an inert factor. Its conversion into innovation underlines the importance of linkages and relationships in everyday innovation processes. Firms pursue co-operative agreements in order to gain rapid access to new technologies or new markets, to benefit from economies of scale in joint R&D and production to tap into essential resources of know-how and to share risks. These linkages possess a number of features which make the network mode a distinct from inter-firm organisation. This paper attempts to give a clear documentation of current innovation activities in the metropolitan region of Barcelone between the three major actors in innovations systems: industrial firms, producer services and research institutions. The presented results are based on representative surveys within an international comparative study in three major metropolitan areas in Europe (Barcelone, Stockholm and Vienna). The results of this research will be relevant for an understanding of how and why different industries build cooperative relationships in metropolitan regions. The results will also provide insights for policy efforts that can help to nurture and expand the regional economic base in the face of the current rapid globalisation of production. Frameworks to identify best practices at the organization level: An analysis

This paper identifies and analyzes the existing frameworks for supporting the identification and classification of best practices at an organization level. The major contribution of this paper is the proposition and application of three criteria for analyzing, comparing and classifying the four identified frameworks. The first criterion is based on structural complexity, facilitates defining the scope of initiatives to identify best practices. The second one, based on the framework orientation, permits choosing a framework depending of the type of studied processes. While the third criterion based on organizational levels, permits comparing and classifying the frameworks in terms of the strategic, tactic or operational issues. In conclusion are outlined important aspects in the selection of a framework according to two proposed scenarios: the best practices searching on Organizations of Excellence and the best practices searching on organizations with a similar business model

Eigenstate equivalent circuit for bi-periodic surfaces: Application to three parallel dipoles

An equivalent circuit for the unit cell of bi-periodic surfaces is proposed. The equivalent circuit is general and simple. It is based on the decomposition of the eigenmodes of the structure and it takes into account the polarization of the incident wave. It consists of the interconnection of two different admittances and two transformers. The model of a unit cell composed of three parallel dipoles is extracted. The transformer of the proposed equivalent circuit models the rotation of the dipoles, while the admittances model their frequency behaviour (resonances). This equivalent circuit provides physical insight and, at the same time, it models in separate elements the contribution of the rotation and the dipole trio resonances. Measuring odd- and even-mode propagation constants of coupled-lines by means of the lattice network

A classic method for measuring the propagation constant of transmission lines is the one proposed by Bianco and Parodi more than four decades ago [1]. It is based on the invariance of the cross ratio of four complex numbers under a bilinear transformation. This means that it is possible to extract the value of the propagation constant (both real and imaginary parts) of an arbitrary transmission line (TL) by measuring, through an arbitrary (and unique) two-port, the input reflection coefficient of four TL sections of different lengths provided they are terminated by the same load. The accuracy of the original method can be greatly improved by measuring a higher number of TL sections and taking all the possible combinations of four lines.Universidad de Málaga. Analytical Eigenstate Equivalent Circuit for Narrow-Slot Bi-Periodic Scatterers

The analytical values of the parameters of an eigenstate-based equivalent circuit are obtained for the analysis and modeling of a simple bi-periodic scatterer. The scatterer geometry consists of a rotated, very narrow slot. Analytical values of this kind of equivalent circuit are obtained for the first time by comparison with a fully-analytical multi-mode equivalent circuit.
