Secret-keeping in therapy by clients who are sexually attracted to children
Objective This study investigated the reasons why pedohebephilic clients disclose their sexual attraction to children in therapy and the experiences associated with this decision among English-speaking samples. Method: The pre-registered online survey combined (1) quantitative correlational data of self-reported improvement, alliance, therapist reaction to disclosure, and the belief that mandatory reporting laws were in place, and (2) qualitative data about reasons for disclosure or no disclosure as well as perceived consequences. The sample consisted of pedohebephilic people who have been clients in therapy and have disclosed (n = 96) or not disclosed (n = 40). Results: While the disclosure and no disclosure groups did not differ in improvement or beliefs about mandatory reporting, those who had disclosed reported a stronger alliance. Clients who did not perceive the therapist’s reaction as supportive reported less improvement than the no disclosure group. Thematic analysis of qualitative data identified three themes concerning motives for disclosing or not disclosing and a fourth regarding differential impacts of disclosure. Discussion: This study indicates that disclosing pedohebephilia does not in and of itself lead to improvement but is contingent on a therapist’s reaction
The non-causal origin of the black hole-galaxy scaling relations
We show that the black hole-bulge mass scaling relations observed from the
local to the high-z Universe can be largely or even entirely explained by a
non-causal origin, i.e. they do not imply the need for any physically coupled
growth of black hole and bulge mass, for example through feedback by active
galactic nuclei (AGN). Provided some physics for the absolute normalisation,
the creation of the scaling relations can be fully explained by the
hierarchical assembly of black hole and stellar mass through galaxy merging,
from an initially uncorrelated distribution of BH and stellar masses in the
early Universe. We show this with a suite of dark matter halo merger trees for
which we make assumptions about (uncorrelated) black hole and stellar mass
values at early cosmic times. We then follow the halos in the presence of
global star formation and black hole accretion recipes that (i) work without
any coupling of the two properties per individual galaxy and (ii) correctly
reproduce the observed star formation and black hole accretion rate density in
the Universe. With disk-to-bulge conversion in mergers included, our
simulations even create the observed slope of ~1.1 for the
M_BH-M_bulge-relations at z=0. This also implies that AGN feedback is not a
required (though still a possible) ingredient in galaxy evolution. In light of
this, other mechanisms that can be invoked to truncate star formation in
massive galaxies are equally justified.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; accepted version; again expanded, 13
pages, 8 figures; now also with BH-halo prediction
Sustainability in astroparticle physics
The topic of sustainability is becoming increasingly important in research activities in astroparticle physics, both in existing and also in future instrument. At this year\u27s International cosmic ray conference (ICRC 2021) one session was dedicated to this topic. This publication will summarise the findings of this well-attended online session
Transfer ionization and its sensitivity to the ground-state wave function
We present kinematically complete theoretical calculations and experiments
for transfer ionization in HHe collisions at 630 keV/u. Experiment and
theory are compared on the most detailed level of fully differential cross
sections in the momentum space. This allows us to unambiguously identify
contributions from the shake-off and two-step-2 mechanisms of the reaction. It
is shown that the simultaneous electron transfer and ionization is highly
sensitive to the quality of a trial initial-state wave function
Coherent Propagation of Polaritons in Semiconductor Heterostructures: Nonlinear Pulse Transmission in Theory and Experiment
The influence of coherent optical nonlinearities on polariton propagation
effects is studied within a theory-experiment comparison. A novel approach that
combines a microscopic treatment of the boundary problem in a sample of finite
thickness with excitonic and biexcitonic nonlinearities is introduced.
Light-polarization dependent spectral changes are analyzed for single-pulse
transmission and pump-probe excitation
